RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS 1872-1958

1 O Clap Your Hands 3’16Australian Chamber Brass Ensemble, Jonathan Bradley organ

O clap your hands all ye people:Shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the Lord most high is terrible:He is a great King over all the earth.God is gone up with a shout,The Lord with the sound of a trumpet.Sing praises to God, sing praises:Sing praises unto our King. For God is the King of all the earth:Sing ye praises every one that hath understanding.God reigneth over the heathen:God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.Sing praises unto our King. Sing praises.

– Psalm 47:1, 2, 5-8

Behold, a silly [weak/poor/pitiful] tender babe,In freezing winter night,In homely manger trembling lies,Alas, a piteous sight!

The inns are full; no man will yieldThis little pilgrim bed.But forced he is with silly beastsIn crib to shroud his head.

This stable is a Prince’s court,This crib his chair of State; The beasts are parcel of his pomp,The wooden dish his plate [silverware].

The persons in that poor attireHis royal liveries wear; The Prince himself is come from heaven; This pomp is prizèd there.

With joy approach, O Christian wight [spirit],Do homage to thy KingAnd highly praise his humble pomp,Wich he from Heaven doth bring.

– Robert Southwell 1561?-1595

HERBERT HOWELLS 1892-1983

3 Blessed are the Dead 4’33Siobhán Stagg soprano

Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord. For theirs is the peace of God,they rest from their labours.Their joy is of the Holy Spirit and shall not be brokenfor they shall come even unto Heaven. For them was achieved the triumph of the Resurrection of the Son of God, that unto them it should be assured not death but to rest awhile from their laboursand to inherit celestial light which is eternal for them that die in the Lord.

7 Faire is the Heaven 5’33

Faire is the heaven where happy soules have placeIn full enjoyment of felicitie;Whence they doe still behold the glorious faceOf the Divine, Eternall Majestie;Yet farre more faire be those bright CherubinsWhich all with golden wings are overdight. And those eternall burning SeraphinsWhich from their faces dart out fiery light;Yet fairer than they both and much more brightBe the Angels and Archangels which attendOn God’s owne person without rest or end. These then in faire each other farre excellingAs to the Highest they approach more neare,Yet is that Highest farre beyond all tellingFairer than all the rest which there appeareThough all their beauties joynd together were; How then can mortal tongue hope to expresseThe image of such endlesse perfectnesse?

% Greater Love Hath No Man 6’02Louise Bottomley soprano, Jeremy Bottomley baritone, Joshua van Konkelenberg organ

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.Love is strong as death; greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.Who, his own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus. Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness, into His marvellous light. I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
