TALLAHASSEE ELKS LODGE #937 BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS ANTLERS OCTOBER 2006 FROM THE ER’S DESK And to think I thought things were slowing down. September was a full month, which we kicked off on the first with the Friday Night Dance Contest. The DJ entertained us with great music and the dancers were fantastic; congratulations to Jackie Wood and Jeff Jansen first place; Dolly Ledig and Rod Stelter second place. I hope we continue to see as great a turnout in October and the months ahead. The Dance Contest was followed by Labor Day Family Fun Day on the fourth, which was a huge success with so many children, grandchildren, and members attending. The food and games were fun for all, especially watching PER Harry Symons getting wiped-out with the whipped cream “pies”! The Gretchen Everhart trip to the Umatilla Youth Camp September 21 – 24 was also a huge success. We had 126 children, family members, chaperons, teachers, assistants, administrators and Elks, and two buses to get them all to Umatilla. The children were amazed and amazing. They thoroughly enjoyed the camp and all that everyone did for them. Their reactions and actions make it all worthwhile and serve as a compelling reminder of just why we are Elks. I encourage all of you to get involved with these children if you ever have a chance. The reward we receive is priceless. My thanks to all that went from our lodge; and to Lynn Warburton and the Youth Camp support staff present. Special thanks to the fundraisers and donors that made this trip possible. The month ended with many memories, including the End of Summer Beach Party on the 29 th . While most of us are looking forward to some cooler weather, some of us are still dreaming of our days at the beach. FROM THE ER’S DESK

And to think I thought things were slowing down.

The Land Redevelopment Project data package is almost complete and will be mailed to all members shortly. Dates for a question and answer session prior to voting as well as member voting on the proposal will be spelled out in the package. I believe this is a positive step forward for our Lodge. Don’t forget the Chili Cook-Off to benefit the families of local soldiers currently serving overseas on October 14. Please contact Denise Mick if you are interested in participating in, sponsoring, or volunteering for the event. The Vietnam Wall Experience is coming to Tallahassee October 13 – 15. If you are interested in volunteering to read names at the ceremony, or assist in traffic control and parking, please contact me or call Susie Mozolic at 877-8191 for more information. If there are any members interested in retiring to the Elks National Home information is available at www.elkshome.org or call 1-800-552-4140 during regular business hours. There are openings available. If you are interested in making a donation to the home, that can be done on-line also. Fraternally Yours Carl Ledig

Land Redevelopment Project The House Committee passed a motion at the August 8, 2006, meeting to recommend to the membership a plan to redevelop our property with the help of Southland Commercial. This project involves the sale of certain parcels, the development of others, and the construction of a new lodge on the existing property. After many studies, marketing analysis, and professional input the House Committee determined that this is the best alternative in order to place this lodge in a position to continue our fraternal works into the next century. The goal is to create cash for development, while retaining income property to provide a long-term income stream for operations and maintenance. A detailed proposal will be mailed to each member shortly announcing the details to be discussed at the meeting to vote on this proposal. As per statute, this meeting will be held at a regular lodge meeting. The meeting date for the vote will be in the packet mailed to you. A short presentation by Southland will be given before the meeting. There will also be an informal answer and question session prior to the voting date that will also be listed in the information mailed to you.

HISTORY OF THE FLORIDA ELKS

Our State Historian, Lowell Tyler, has prepared a CD that contains the history of the Florida Elks since 1891. The Lodge Secretary has a copy of the CD that you can borrow if you are interested in viewing the material. In addition, if you would like your own CD, you can request one from Mr. Tyler at [email protected] or the Florida State Elks Association at [email protected] for that copy.

CANDLELIGHT DINNER LIMITED ENGAGEMENT

November 18 There will be a Candlelight Dinner tentatively set for November 18th. Many of you will remember the routine: tickets sold in advance, price fixed, menu fixed, the one course at a time meal. Tom Walden and the team are working on finalizing the menu, so watch next month’s newsletter for more details and the date certain. Set aside $10 a person if you plan to attend. Not more than fifty tickets will be sold.

FSU vs. NORTH CAROLINA STATE STEAK TAILGATE PARTY

Thursday, October 5th

Come join us as we watch the football game between FSU and North Carolina State. Game time is 7:30 pm but come out early and eat dinner with us. The lounge will be open until the end of the game. Dinner will be served from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. For $14.00 per person, you will get a 12 oz. New York Strip, baked potato, salad, and roll. OR, if you want to bring your own steak, we will grill it and you can purchase the potato, salad, and roll for only $6.00. What a deal and what a game to view that night!

FREE WINE TASTING WITH

DINNER PURCHASE ON OCTOBER 20 A new selection of wine will be featured on Friday, October 20th in the dining room from 6:00-8:00 pm. Everyone who purchases the dinner buffet will be invited to join in the wine tasting. What a great way to be introduced to different wines!

CHILI COOK-OFF OCTOBER 14 (SATURDAY)

11:00 – 3:00 Purchase your chili tickets in advance for $6.00 and save $1.50! Tickets sold the day of the event will cost $7.50. The cutoff date to purchase advance tickets is Friday, October 13th. Come sample all the chili and vote for your favorite. We still need volunteers and donations. See Nanci Longman for details. MATCH GAME October 20 (Friday Night)

For your entertainment, join us on Friday, October 20th for the MATCH GAME SHOW. Why not have dinner before the game and then enjoy the game show afterwards. The Match Game will begin at 8:30 pm. If you missed the last Newlywed Game (with the not-so-newlywed participants), you missed a lot of fun - don’t miss this one!

HALLOWEEN PARTY October 27 (Friday Night)

Wear your funniest, scariest, or most original costume on Friday, October 27th as we celebrate Halloween. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes – so let your hair down - take the plunge – come out and participate! Denise Mick, Activities Committee Chairperson

SCHOLARSHIPS FORMS NOW AVAILABLE The application forms for the three kinds of Elks scholarships are now available on the www.elks.org website. If you need a form and do not have access to the Internet, contact Julia Ferrell, our lodge’s scholarship chairman, for hard copies. The types of scholarships are the Most Valuable Student (all high school seniors are eligible for this scholarship); the Legacy Scholarship (for high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of Elks); and, Emergency Education Grants (for high school seniors whose parent was an Elk, and that parent is now deceased).

WISHING WELL CONTRIBUTIONS

For the month of August, Wishing Well donations totaled $432, (more than $100 increase from July) and have been sent to the Harry-Anna Trust Fund. All donations are appreciated and help us to support the major projects, including the Florida Elks Youth Camp that the Gretchen Everhart family just visited, supported by the Elks of Florida. Money collected is used to purchase certificates in the Harry-Anna Trust Fund.

ATTENTION: If you have borrowed any lodge or kitchen equipment: stainless pans, chaffing dishes, sheet pans, large or small cookie pans, etc., please return them. They are missed.

LUNCH SERVED AT THE

NATIONAL GUARD BY THE ELKS On Tuesday, September 12, 2006, our lodge provided a pot roast luncheon to the military folks at the National Guard Armory. Rick Peckham rounded up a group of helpers and prepared the lunch to those attending. The lodge received a gracious thank you note from Col. Charles Mohr (Ret.) for the great food, fine fellowship, and the rewarding experience enjoyed by all who were there.

FSEA MIDYEAR CONVENTION

Orlando, Florida November 10-11, 2006

If you are interested in attending the Florida State Elks Association midyear convention in Orlando in November, the convention will be held at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center on November 10-11th.

ELKETTS FOR PRESIDENT! What a group those Elketts are. They helped us with our air conditioner then turned around and had a cake walk and cake auction fundraiser. I think Rod and Jim were in cahoots with the bidding. Then they threw a tailgate party that was fabulous and a lot of fun. The Elketts are such a wonderful group and they seem to have the most fun supporting worthwhile causes. And they really enjoy doing it. If you spot one, please say “THANKS.” I can't wait to see what they’ll be up to next. We’ll talk again… TThhee SShhaaddooww

OCTOBER IS ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION MONTH

Applications for the Elks National Foundation's 2006 Most Valuable Student contest ARE available at your local Elks Lodge, online, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Foundation. Applications for the 2006 contest have to be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by January 5, 2007. Winners of the 2006 contest will be announced here by May 16, 2076. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated boys and girls in the 2007 competition. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; resident alien status does not qualify. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship. All scholarships are in the form of certificates of award conditional upon the enrollment of the winner in an accredited US college or university. Applications must advance through local, district and state competition to reach the national competition. Ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, Most Valuable Student scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree, on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), in a US American college or university. Male and female students compete separately. Through this Most Valuable Student competition and its four other scholarship programs, the Elks National Foundation annually awards $3.4 million in scholarships. The Most Valuable Student program was established in 1931.

ROAD CLEAN-UP ON PARK AVENUE

Our lodge continues with its participation in the city’s Adopt-A-Road program, picking up trash once a month on Park Avenue. You can see the sign on Park Avenue just West of Magnolia Drive that advertises this fact. There is another sign on Park heading East from Franklin Boulevard. If you have an idea on a community service project that would give the lodge more visibility, contact Exalted Ruler Carl Ledig or Lodge Secretary Tom Walden. If you would like to volunteer to assist in the road clean up, please contact Tom Walden.

ELKS DRUG AWARENESS Conducting a Program That Works

The Elks Drug Awareness Education Program can greatly assist you in your efforts in the community. That confidence is based upon the knowledge that all components of the program have been used successfully in Lodges nationwide; there is nothing experimental about it.

The basic premise is that the Elks are not experts in drug use or its prevention. The strength of the Elks program is that it has identified a critical problem, drug use among youth; selected an achievable goal, prevention through education; and developed a program to reach that goal, activation of the community. The Elks are facilitators who can help you conduct a successful program in your community.

Five basic steps, followed in sequence, will surely lead to a successful program that will influence many youths to not destroy their future potential and their lives with drugs. It will be an achievement of which everyone involved can be justly proud.

The Elks Lodge in or nearest to your community is ready to help you with your program. The Elks can provide three critical elements: education materials, volunteer manpower and assistance with fundraising.
