6. WHY Rackspace
4
The question is no longer:
“Should I migrate
my SAP systems
to the cloud?”
5
• GCP – all inside their network
• Secure and fast communications
• AWS – secure systems all built and run by AWS
• Most clients ?
• First to market advantage
• Azure – Knowledge, hardware
• CHOICES CHOICES
But - Which cloud for SAP?
6
Which cloud for SAP?
• SAP solutions are cloud infrastructure agnostic
• SAP specific know-how is the main differentiator
• Long term partnership
• Microsoft USE SAP
• Project Embrace
• Reference architecture

Why Hasso Plattner Invented HANA
11
massive Memory demands – most SAP customers need a HANA system up to 3 TB, some up to 25 TB
Storage – write performance is key for transaction response time
Storage – read performance is key for trend analysis on historical data
Growth of memory depends on complexity of reports (amongst other factors)
Public clouds are fully certified to cope up with HANA
The Challenge Of HANA
12
In the past sizing was
focussed on SAPS, the
“horsepower” of SAP
With HANA sizing is focussed
on database memory only
Rule of thumb:
• 60% of HANA memory
for data
• 40% for HANA operation
App servers
• 4 vCPU, 16GB for ABAP
• 8 vCores; 32GB for JAVA

SAPS Numbers Became Useless –
Memory Is The New King!
13
And Storage Throughout The New Frontier
If HANA can’t write fast enough -response time will suffer.
If HANA isn’t fast enough -system start will be prolonged.
• Data volume: 1, 2x net data size on disk
• Log volume: ½x RAM up to 512 GB,512 GB for larger systems
• Shared volume: 1x RAM up to 1 TB,1 TB for larger systems
• Operating System needs a 100 GB LUNfor binaries and configuration files.
14
In-Memory Databases and the Alzheimer effect:
What happens to my data if the data center catch fire?
15
HA And DR For HANA
Clouds grant 99.90% per VM
Premium disk are mirrored 3X
VMs booted on a healthy host within ~8 minutes in case of a hardware failure
but ……
• Very low RTO (< 1 hour)
• Enables parallel read
• Enables secondary time travel
(shadow database)
• Mitigate logical disasters (User deleting
tables by mistake etc.)

Transition – just move to the cloud
No changes of business processes or custom code
Only technical tests necessary
Just a weekend downtime for production systems
OS/DB Migration – also change of OS and/or DB
No changes of business processes or custom code
Only technical tests necessary
Just a weekend downtime for production systems
S/4 Conversion – also change from ECC to S/4
Adaption of business processes and custom code
Functional tests with LoB necessary
Just a weekend downtime for production systems

DMO Migration To HANA
• At least ECC EHP6 SP16 for a
HANA migration
• SAP Database Migration Option
(DMO)
of SAP Software Update Manager
(SUM) enables a combination of
update and
"in-place" HANA migration
• SID/logical system remain the same
preserving the connectivity in the
system.
• DB source remains consistent for
fallback
• 1 Weekend of downtime only

Data structure, aggregates and indicesreplaced by ad-hoc algorithms
Reduced number of data tables from 25,000 in ECC to 7,000 in S/4HANA
If Z-ABAP cant read a defunct table, the table is emulated. Writing no longer possible!
All Custom Code (Z-ABAPs) must bechecked with the SAP Custom Code Check Tool as part of an S/4 conversion
Code that "fails" in this check must beadapted to the new data structure of S/4
Average ECC has 5,000 to 15,000 Custom Objects
