¡Hola! As I type, the US election exit polls are beginning to emerge. It’s easy to get worked up about Trump, but then I wonder that since I live on a Mediterranean island paradise do I need to get worked up? Even on a national level, as a non-Spanish resident, it’s easy to opt-out and live a life completely ignorant to what is going on in national and local politics. But, when you see what is happening here in Pollensa, for example, or in Spain that has a PM for the first time in nearly a year, it is clear that it does matter, we should take note. This is our home and it is our business to know and care. The story rumbling on in Pollensa’s Town Hall is surely reaching a conclusion soon. I will try and keep you up to date as the news happens so make sure you follow the TOTN Facebook page.

Black Friday in MallorcaStores, from large to small, on the island started preparing for Black Friday, well in advance. A few years ago, only a few businesses in Mallorca discounted for Black Friday, last year the trend was well and truly established. A tradition imported from the US, the day after their Thanksgiving, the day marks the beginning of Christmas shopping with discounts and promotions for various products.

Originally dedicated to just technology products, the promotions extend to a whole array. Now familiar with the trend, many wait to purchase high-value items, from textiles or technology. Discounts can start at around 30%, although in some cases can reach and even exceed 50%.

Most shops will extend offers throughout the weekend as Sunday 27th is a festive opening day. So expect lots of Christmas gift items and winter clothes to incentivize your Black Friday purchases.

Balaixa Purchase Agreement The Council of Pollensa has reached a purchase agreement with the Balaixa property in Cala San Vincente, for a final price of €215,250.

The government team (the shaky union of Junts-UMP) will now submit the proposal for discussion at a special meeting, which will be held some time in the next week or so. The operation will only succeed if the majority agree.

At a time of uncertainty, the mayor, Miquel Àngel March, told press that he is confident the proposal will move forward. The Residents’ Association of

Cala de Sant Vicente regard this as an historic agreement after years of demands. The President of the Association Xisco Mas told press that, “The agreement with the property is great news to end the government crisis.” The Balaixa Property is one of the main demands of the association.

The green zone is made up of 170sqm and includes a building already in a state dilapidation. Councillor Miquel Àngel Sureda, negotiated the purchase together with the mayor Miquel Àngel March (both Junts), he confirmed that the Council has not yet decided how the green zone will be used, or if they will maintain or tear down the existing building and that, “The main goal was to get an agreement as quickly as possible to recover the space and avoid going to court expropriation.”

Pollensa Town Hall UpdateThe past fortnight in the Town Hall in Pollensa has been tense. Ex-Mayor Tomeu Cifre Ochogavia is calling for opposition parties to unite and hold a vote of no confidence in the current government, led by Miquel Angel March. The one tying it all together is Andres Nevado Rodriguez of the Port’s independent party, the UMP. He has called for the mayor to get more support in government within 10 days (that period expired last week). The mayor has been working hard to make this happen but his efforts so far have failed, El Pi have rejected the offer twice.

The meeting that everyone was waiting for was held on Monday, 7 November. Representatives of Junts, UMP and El Pi met to negotiate a possible solution to the government crisis.

Despite El Pi already refusing twice to enter into government with Junts and UMP, Mayor Miquel Àngel March (Junts) is not giving up and is seeking an agreement that avoids a possible motion of no confidence, which would be led by the ex-mayor and leader of Tots, Tomeu Cifre Ochogavía.

On the same evening, the ex-mayor called a meeting with PP Councillor, David Alonso, and the UMP team to begin negotiations for an alternative government. However, UMP left the meeting to join the three-party talks between Junts, UMP, and El Pi. It would be possible to govern with a minority of eight councillors against the nine that would remain in the opposition (Tots, Alternative, PP).

If the pact between Junts and UMP does not go ahead, if the ‘molleros’ decide to break from the government, the ex-mayor explained that there are two possibilities: either a motion of no confidence or the resignation of the mayor. The immediate future of the Junts-UMP council will be concluded imminently. If you want to follow this story as it develops, keep an eye on the TOTN Facebook page for updates.

Hydroplane Training Ground – Council not keenDeputy Mayor, Tomeu Cifre Bennàsar (Junts), has reiterated the council’s refusal to authorize the proposed seaplane training ground in Puerto Pollensa after various stakeholders met with promoters at the Yacht Club. The project sponsor, Miguel Buades, president of the Foundation Aeronautics Majorcan (FAM), said the idea is to establish a ‘track’ to land seaplanes in the bay

so that pilots can practise and obtain their license. The project could be extended to other services such as a regular line to Formentera or even a collaboration to detect environmental crimes. He said it is a ‘non-polluting’ activity that would not represent any danger because “they cannot fly seaplanes over populated centres.”

Buades said the aim is to “promote civilian use of seaplanes in Mallorca” by using the military base in the Port, whose Chief Colonel, Roman Martinez Santos, was at the meeting. The FAM president stressed that the aircraft would rest at the base of Son Bonet and not in the Port, he also talked about the creation of a European Mediterranean Seaplane Office to coordinate joint actions with other countries in fire fighting, transport of the sick or even surveillance against drug trafficking. Meanwhile, the municipal representative explained that the council “does not want to separate this issue from the integrated management of the Bay” adding, “there are still many problems to solve such as illegal moorings or sharing the Base”. Cifre added that the council “has never spoken out against seaplane public service” but said that this project is based on an “eminently private activity to promote a very specific type of tourism”. He reiterated that it “does not fit into the plans” of the government team.

Menjar bé in Sa PoblaSa Pobla launched its new edition of ‘Menjar Bé a Sa Pobla’ at the Museum of Can Planes this week. The initiative is organized by the council’s office of Trade, Fairs and Festivals. 26 restaurants of the town will participate and offer their best dishes

Local NewsFundraising for Little Girl

from 18 November to 4 December. As last year, the main ingredient will be the local rice.

Alcudia’s Guardian Angel FiestaOctober 29th saw the town celebrate the Festa dels Angels Custodis with attendance from all the town’s officials, including Mayors of Alcudia and Sa Pobla, police officers and their families. The religious ceremony was held in the church of Sant Jaume and was followed by a celebratory lunch. During the speeches Deputy Inspector Abelardo Mesias explained that up to 30 September there have been over 5,000 incidents, more than 1,500 denuncias, (300 more than last year), and 400 notices of urban damage and 700 lost items returned. Mayor Antoni Mir, thanked the families and members of the local police and expressed his pride and gratitude for his force’s professionalism. He awarded them with a plaque addressed to all members of the local police which reads “In gratitude for the work of our local police.”

Campanet Pool Bar up for Tender

The council has terminated the contract for the bar and the swimming pool after the just a year and a half with the current tenure. It is now up for tender and until then the Campanet sports club will take over the bar and make sure it is open during training hours.

Mozzie MiseryHave you noticed more mosquito bites? This year there seems to be more than ever and the explanation is the rain followed by warm temperatures that we experienced in October. At a temperature of around 25°C a mosquito can lay around 200 eggs that hatch two weeks later. And you need to be wary of the stripy variety, the Asian Tiger Mosquito has a much nastier bite. The Egyptian Tiger mosquito is the one that carries yellow fever and dengue so no need for panic but warnings are that this could happen in the future. Keep your flower pots turned up and look out for stagnant water. And, let’s hope the cold temperatures of this week will get rid of them.

Eco-Tax for the Claustre The council of Pollensa has presented to the government the complete remodelling of the convent of Sant Domingo is a project that could be financed by the tax on sustainable tourism.

The building, which is of municipal ownership except for the church, is home to the Museum of Pollença, the municipal radio and plays host to the Festival de Pollença and other performances.

At a cost of €1.9m, the project qualifies for funding from the eco-tax as it is of heritage concern. The council explained that without this public assistance, “it would be very difficult to carry out rehabilitation with the current limitations.”

Since the social residence moved, the property is underutilized and slowly falling into disrepair. The proposed project would see the expansion of the Museum, around the entire claustre on the first floor. It also includes an area dedicated for social activity and theatre facilities such as dressing rooms.

Children in Pollensa’s Costa I Llobera infant and primary school have been gathering money to help support the family of little 8-year-old Netheb. After complaining of pain, Netheb’s parents took her to Son Espases hospital, where a fracture of her arm was diagnosed. Doctors were concerned and transferred her to Sant Joan de Deu children’s hospital in Barcelona for a biopsy and further tests, which confirmed the diagnosis of Osteosarcoma, bone cancer.

Netheb is now undergoing a long course of chemotherapy. She has completed 1 week of a course of 44 treatments.

The trips to the hospital and caring for Netheb mean that her parents have had to stop work and fit around her schedule and, of course, stay at the hospital with her. With another three year old in the family, they are in need of help. If you can, please donate funds to the Colonya Caixa account: ES79 2056 0000 6510 0011 6325 marked “Firam per Na Netheb”.

A German based charity, www.wirhaltenzusammen.jimdo who in collaboration with Pollensa Care, came upon the story as they were meeting to discuss a project in Mallorca for bereaved

parents. They are planning to donate some funds that were raised by a school in Germany directly to the family and are expected to do so in the next week or so. More information in the next issue of TOTN.

Pollensa’s 2016 Fira, is massively different. For the first time there is theme featuring throughout, this time raffia is the focus. Also, as you can see from the detailed programme on page 4, the decentralization of the fair and exhibition spaces marks this as a departure from the norm. The area around the Roman Bridge plays a much larger role. Plus, we should not forget the first ever Eco Fair that will take place during the fair at Monnares Square.

Raffia is under the spotlight because the council wanted to pay homage to the historical industry that held such great importance in Pollensa during the 1960s and 1970s. During the fair there will be an exhibition and screening of video interviews with people who worked in the industry.

The fair began early with the Museum of Pollensa opening the exhibition Blanc Especial by Eduard Vich. The event also will take advantage to display two latest acquisitions of the museum, the paintings by Joan O’Neille Rossinyole “The Strait of Ternelles” and Joan Fuster Bonnin “Cami de Formentor”.

Details of all the exhibitions that form part of the Fira’s programme are:

This year’s much awaited N2 Production is a pantomime (“oh yes it is”), based loosely on the original Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, but of course with their own quirky twist on the story. There is a huge cast of almost 30, consisting of both adults (watch out for some familiar, local faces, including the North’s very own Radio Presenter and TOTN’s very own Mallorquinista, Charles Nutter) as well as children and young adults from the N2 Theatre Group. This is a magical story full of colourful characters, surprises, magic, music and laughter, fun for all ages. What better way to kick off the festive season and get us

in the Christmas spirit! Not to be missed!

As always with N2 Productions the profits are going to charity. This year it is ‘ADDA’ Associació d´Ajuda a l´Acompanyant del Malalt de les Illes Balears -

The Mallorquinista There is increasing pressure mounting on Fernando Vazquez, head coach of Real Mallorca – certainly from the fans. Following the dismal performance in the 2 – 2 draw at bottom-of-the-table Nastic, the online fans forum went into overdrive. There was universal condemnation of the lack of ambition exhibited by the coach in naming a defensive set up from the beginning. Nastic, or to give them their full name Gimnastic de Tarragona, had not won a game in the league this season having gained six points in six drawn matches. A win away from home for the islander’s was the common prediction of the Spanish soccer pundits. However, Real Mallorca showed a lack of drive and ambition from the off, which can be attributed to the coach’s desire not to lose. When he gives them free rein to attack, the players look much more comfortable and are able to express themselves. The two shining lights in attacking terms this season have been Juan Culio, a 30-year-old Argentinian midfielder and 21-year-old local born Brandon Thomas. Culio was suspended for the trip to Tarragona having accumulated 5 yellow cards and Vazquez opted for Damia Sabater in his place. Sabater is at best a journeyman defensive midfielder and Nastic smelt fear in the visitor’s ranks, they went for the jugular and were unlucky not to win.

Despite the fans calling for the coach to be dismissed, he remains in favour with those in charge of the club. Chief Executive Moheta Molanga yet again endorsed the incumbent coach. Similarly Steve Nash, who is part of the consortium that owns the club headed by Robert Sarver, was also fulsome in his praise of Vazquez. He went as far to say that the long-term strategy is to get the club into La Liga and once there to stay there. Nash said that if it took four years to achieve that goal, then so be it. This did not sit well with long suffering supporters.

Brandon Thomas is the team’s top scorer and top clubs in Spain have already taken note. Molanga insists there is no possibility of him leaving in the winter transfer window and the buy-out clause of €8m in his contract will be addressed in the new year.

Mallorca’s next game is at Cordoba on the 13th November and then at home to Sevilla B on Saturday 19th November with a 6pm kick off.

Nastic 2 -2 Real MallorcaNastic tore into the visitors from the off and took a lead midway through the first half. Brandon equalized 45 seconds after half time. Nastic were dominant throughout and when they retook the lead only one result looked possible. Brandon popped up minutes from time with a brilliant equalizer to give Mallorca a point they scarcely deserved.

Real Mallorca 2-2 Zaragoza This was labelled as a must win match but the islanders failed to deliver. Keeper Santamaria was badly at fault when Zaragoza opened the scoring although Culio equalized. Another defensive howler gave the visitors the lead and then Lago Junior, Mallorca’s best player on the night, was substituted by Lekic. This brought howls of derision directed at Vazquez although in his defence Lekic salvaged a point with a headed goal.
