Anda UnionThe brilliant nine-piece band Anda Union from Inner Mongolia first toured the UK in 2013 and stole the show everywhere. The band members all grew up in families ‘with the music’, several of whom still live in the traditional Mongolian way, and came together at music college in Hohhot, their capital city. There they were able to integrate traditional forms - like the now-famous throat singing - into creating a sound uniquely and mysteriously Mongolian but with a strong appeal to a western sensibility. A rare opportunity to hear live the music of Mongolia.

“Anda Union are brilliant, I rate their gig at Lakeside as one of my highlights over the years, it was amazing. We’d love to have them back” NOTTINGHAM LAKESIDE ARTS CENTRE

Torch Theatre Company

GravIn October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. He was 56 years old.

Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more.

The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Bale as ‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas that celebrates the man and the legend. With the blessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one man show will explore the life of a man who was as fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it.

Directed by the Torch Theatre’s Artistic Director Peter Doran, ‘Grav’ will remind the world once more of a unique life well lived and of a man who did so much more than eat soft centres.

Tentacle Tribe & Karol Cysewski

Pixelated Squid and the UniverseWeird science meets hip-hop in a dance double bill that is out of this world…

In an evening of dance, comedy and extremes this double bill takes audiences on a journey from the bottom of the sea to the far reaches of the universe.

Swedish/Canadian B-boy and B-girl duo Emmanuelle Lê Phan and Elon Höglund aka Tentacle Tribe, bring their production Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid to Wales in a performance inspired by creatures of land and sea. These dynamic street-dancers have sold out all over the world and their celebrated creature feature makes one half of this thrilling, fun and enlightening evening of dance.

The Wonder of the Universe from Wales’ Karol Cysewski is another kettle of fish (a pre-historic fish) offering a humorous and stimulating interpretation of the documentary of the same title. Three geeks and a celebrity scientist (voice over by Brian Cox) take an imaginative look at the origins of the universe.

Both performances will make you think, laugh and look at the world in a different way. From tiny creatures of the sea and sky, some downright fishy things that make us human, to all the wonders of the universe.

Mr & Mrs Clark

Smash It Up!Performers: Gareth Clark, Steven George Jones, Marega PalserChoreography: Catherine Bennett Design: Becky Kemp-Davies

In your hometown a symbol of equality, justice and freedom has been destroyed; a piece of art that stood for everything you know to be right. Its destruction makes way for a privately guarded shopping centre.

In collaboration with Newport art activists Bosch and with the guidance of artist Andre Stitt, Mr and Mrs Clark developed a timeline of performances in public spaces that now make up a theatre show. They call it Smash It Up.

Short-listed for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Smash It Up is a destructive plea for some cultural conservationism. It is a challenging demand for equality, for hope and for greater creative freedom and beyond all for an understanding and nurturing of the creative imagination.

Under Milk Wood (15)Dir: Kevin Allen UK 2014 1hr 27mins Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Church, Gareth Edwards, Sharon Morgan

Kevin Allen’s Under Milk Wood is the first cinema production of Dylan Thomas’ brilliant, haunting radio play since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s 1972 film.

Adapted by T. James Jones, with a screenplay written by Murray Lachlan Young, Michael Breen and Kevin Allen, Dan y Wenallt veers away from the traditional, literal reflection of Thomas’ original work and instead explores some of the more visceral elements of the funny, filthily fluid and magical dreamscape of the work whilst staying faithful to Dylan Thomas’s original text.

The Welsh language version of this film is the UK submission Best Foreign Language Film for the 2016 Academy Awards.

Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. “...a creamily sensuous, richly observed piece of work, handsomely detailed and furnished: the clothes, the hair, the automobiles, the train carriages, the record players, the lipstick and the cigarettes are all superbly presented. The combination of all this is intoxicating in itself.” THE GUARDIAN

In the Heart of the Sea 3D (12A) Dir: Ron Howard USA 2015 2hrs 2mins Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. The film reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The Pearl Button (tbc)Dir: Patricio Guzman Chile/France/Spain 2015 1hr 44mins, Spanish with English subtitles Gabriela Paterito, Cristina Calderon, Gabriela Salazar

Delighting in the beauty of Patagonia’s volcanoes, mountains and glaciers, this extraordinary film will give you much to ponder. In the same lyrical vein as his wonderful Nostalgia for The Light, Guzman ruminates on astronomy, water, memory, and much else besides. Via a pearl button he links Allende’s atrocities to the story of Jimmy Button, a native Amerindian taken to Europe in the 19th century. Guzman explores Chile’s tortured history through many poignant interviews. Nobody else really makes films like this that express deeply humanist, spiritual ideas so effortlessly.Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Script at Berlin International Film Festival 2015

For Janet, local Welsh images and Celtic culture inspire paintings of natural form and space with colour playing a vital part. Tony has worked in watercolour for the last twenty years attempting to capture the shifting effects of light and atmosphere on the sea and sky. Recent work has focussed on Port Talbot where the massive steelworks is always changing, wreathed in clouds of steam and smoke enveloping the structures creating movement and mystery.
