Just Me, Just You

Jacqui Dankworth & Charlie WoodMulti award-winning vocalist, Jacqui Dankworth, is joined by acclaimed American pianist-vocalist, Charlie Wood and her stellar group of musicians, for a unique concert of duets celebrating a century of song.

Inspired by some of the great musical partnerships, such as Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong and George & Ira Gershwin - the concert will feature numbers including: Alone Together, Autumn In New York and It Don’t Mean a Thing.

Given her musical pedigree – daughter of Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth - it’s no surprise that Jacqui Dankworth is regarded as one of the UK’s finest jazz vocalists. Charlie Wood is a singer and keyboardist who covers all musical styles. As a Memphis Tennessee native, he grew up immersed in jazz, blues, and old-school R&B soul and toured Europe and the US with blues legend Albert King, before returning to the King’s Palace Café, Beale Street where he and his band were joined by the likes of B.B. King, George Coleman, Joey DeFrancesco, Alvin Batiste and Georgie Fame.

“Had I not been sitting about three feet away from the action, I would have suspected some kind of electronic trickery because the arrangement was so complex, the timing so nifty and Ms Dankworth’s vocal control so exquisite” THE OBSERVER

“One of our finest singers, regardless of category” THE SUNDAY TIMES (JACQUI DANKWORTH)

A perfect introduction to theatre.

The Emperor’s New Clothes will join the company’s repertoire including The Enormous Turnip (2012) as well as its acclaimed productions of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, The Elves And The Shoemaker, The Little Red Hen, 3 Little Pigs and The Hare & The Tortoise.

Swansea City OperaLa Bohème by Puccini. Sung in English

It’s Christmas Eve in Paris. A young poet, an artist and a philosopher are celebrating in their flat. Then comes a knock at the door, a lost key and an accidental touch of cold hands in the dark, and so begins one of the greatest romances of all opera. From the irrepressible joy of their burgeoning love affair through to the unbearable heartbreak at their separation by death, only the stoniest of hearts could fail to be moved by this timeless story.

We are delighted to welcome the critically acclaimed Swansea City Opera, who are setting their production of La Bohème in war torn 1940s Paris. Sung in English and accompanied by chamber orchestra, don’t miss this opportunity to hear Puccini’s shimmering concoction of soaring vocal lines and lush orchestral melodies.

Famous arias include; Che gelida manina, ‘Your tiny hand is frozen’ and Mi chiamano Mimì , ‘They call me Mimì’.

There will be a pre-performance talk about the opera and production, given by the Artistic Director of Swansea City Opera, Brendan Wheatley.

“A cautionary allegory with debauchery, hedonism, mild Homo-eroticism, greed and death as its central themes should be explosive...Well it was! This is a powerful, beautifully framed, presented and performed show with such excellence...no one could have left this show disappointed. This is a four star review” LOVE SHREWSBURY.COM

Big Telly Theatre Company presents

Spike Milligan’s PuckoonIt’s back by popular demand! Big Telly’s smash hit stage production of Spike Milligan’s PUCKOON returns with its Goonish blend of theatrical anarchy, musical wit, and impossible plot. Ireland 1922, and the Ulster Boundary Commission has drawn the new border straight through the small town of Puckoon. With the church separated from its own graveyard and drink now thirty percent cheaper in one corner of the pub, life in the newly divided village will never be the same again. Based on the book by Spike Milligan, this comic masterpiece is an irreverent and hilarious story which takes the mick, celebrates the absurd, and paints a picture of a simple life that borders on the ridiculous.

Based on the book by Spike Milligan, directed by Zoë Seaton, music by Paul Boyd.

“They say there is a thin line between insanity and genius and Big Telly’s adaptation of Spike Milligan’s novel Puckoon demonstrates how very thin that line is, and how very easy it is to jump back and forth across that line with a silly grin on one’s face.”

The children and their mother, now penniless, are forced to move from London to rural Yorkshire near a railway line. The story deals with themes of justice, the importance of family and the kindness of strangers.

Lucia di Lammermoor tells the story of an ongoing feud between two families in 17th century Scotland that has terrible consequences for two young lovers. It contains what is undoubtedly one of opera’s most poignant and gripping mad scenes, and is regarded as one of Donizetti’s finest works. The opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than a decade, so this new production by Katie Mitchell will be a particularly important and exciting event. The title role will be sung by Diana Damrau, an expert in the coloratura repertory, while American tenor Charles Castronovo takes on that of her secret lover, the reckless and passionate Edgardo.

Giselle (12A*)Giselle is the quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet’s title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright’s production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty.

Her audience, always coming in for a good laugh, acts as if she was the diva she believes she is. The Divide (tbc)Dir: Katharine RoundUK 2016 1hr 14mins

The story of seven individuals striving for a better life in modern day Great Britain and the United States - each tale illustrating how every aspect of our lives is controlled by one factor: the size of the gap between rich and poor.

By weaving these stories with news archive from 1979 to the present day, the film creates a lyrical, psychological and tragi-comic picture of how economic division creates social division. It serves as both a call to arms, and a powerful warning. The film is inspired by the critically-acclaimed, best-selling book “The Spirit Level” by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett.

The Sacred YewAn exhibition of paintings, ceramics and photographyby Janis Fry, Valerie James and Paul Greenwood

The Yew, the oldest living tree is an immortal giant, capable of continual regeneration, has been known for thousands of years in cultures of the northern hemisphere as the Tree of Life. Wales has the largest collection of ancient yews on earth and in Britain the Yew has been an axis mundi, a Guardian, a bridge between life and death, a boundary marker, a marriage tree, a healer and a medicine tree.

Three artists come together, sharing a rich passion for the tree - Janis Fry painter, Valerie James ceramic sculptor and Paul Greenwood photographer. The thread running through and binding the work of these artists is the mystery and power of the Yew.
