Fulton County Schools is dedicated to providing positive extracurricular experiences through

quality programs to all students. Participation in intramural activities is designed to provide

opportunities for the advancement of each student’s personal and skill development,

application of knowledge, and desire to be a lifelong learner. As an extension of the physical

education instructional program, the intramural program is an integral part of the middle

school learning experience and an excellent opportunity for the home, school and community

to work together.

Middle grade students in the intramural program should be exposed to a wide variety of skills,

activities, and sports so that they may refine their interests and make choices to suit their

personal abilities and needs. The intramural program offerings should complement the

instructional physical education program. This program should be enjoyable, non-competitive,

offer moderate to vigorous physical activity, safe, and should occur in a positive climate with

appropriate adult supervision and leadership.

The Fulton County Schools Intramural Handbook is a compilation of board policies, system

administrative regulations, and operational procedures. This handbook was prepared by the

Athletic Department to primarily serve as a reference source for administrators, coaches, and

other personnel working with middle school intramural programs. This document will be

revised periodically to ensure content accuracy and alignment with FCS policies, regulations,

and procedures.

school learner.

2. To aide in the development of self-esteem, citizenship, responsibility, sportsmanship, and skills in

cooperative and leadership behaviors.

3. To serve as a laboratory for additional practice and refinement of skills, exploration, and self-

assessment introduced in the physical education instructional program.

4. To provide an opportunity to take part in activities that encourage active participation.

5. To exist solely for the welfare of young adolescent learners; not to serve as a feeder program for

extramural or high school athletic programs.

6. To reinforce the concept that winning is less important than preparing to win.

7. To determine participation by interest rather than skill; not limiting activities solely to the highly

skilled or athletic participants.

1. Intramural programs may run from August 30th through April 27th each school year.

2. Intramural programs at each school should be held a minimum of four days per week for students in

all three grade levels at no cost to students.

3. Each day's activities should be held for a minimum of 60 minutes. Activities may be held before or

after school with administrative approval. Weekend activities are prohibited.

4. Cancellation of intramural activities require administrative approval and a 24 hour cancellation notice

to students and parents, unless an emergency situation has been determined by the administration.

5. It is recommended that each school organize a student intramural council with representatives from

each grade level to help make decisions about the intramural program.

6. Each school will conduct a student interest survey to determine the needs and interests of the stu-

dent body before planning the yearly intramural activity calendar.

7. A semester intramural plan of activities and offerings will be finalized prior to the beginning of each

semester and approved by the principal. Rainy day activities will be included in the plan. Team and

individual activities are to be included. No single intramural activity should last for more than two to

three weeks.

8. Students must be enrolled in the school to participate in intramural activities.

9. Students will not be permitted to participate in intramural activities on days they have been assigned

to serve in ISS or OSS.

10. Intramural activities should be advertised and promoted across the school and posted on the school

website. Schools may choose to make daily P.A. announcements regarding intramural activities.

As intramural coaches, it is your obligation to carry out all duties and responsibilities to the best of your

ability. Failure to do so could result in negligence at the district or local school level.

Intramural leader & coach expectations and responsibilities are as follows:

1. The intramural coach should be present each day for the intramural activity.

2. The Intramural Leader will develop a yearly calendar of activities based on the student interest

survey results. Each school should offer at least two different activities per day when facilities and

staff permit. All activities should be modified to reinforce individual skill and development.

3. The Intramural Leader will ensure all participants have a signed intramural registration form/parent

permission form on file prior to participation in intramurals. The registration forms will be kept on

file for the entire school year and a master list of approved students should be readily accessible by

the intramural coaches.

4. All schools will require student participants to sign in on a daily basis prior to participation in the

District Policy – IDE – Intramural and Extramural Activities Policy - The Board of Education encourages each school to offer intramural and extramural activities for stu-

dents. To be eligible for participation in intramural or extramural activities, an individual must be enrolled

full time in the school that sponsors the activity.

Intramural activities are defined as extracurricular extensions of physical education programs that are struc-

tured and organized within each individual school. Any student enrolled in Fulton County Schools may par-

ticipate in intramural activities. Tryouts are not permitted for intramural activities. Schools should offer a va-

riety of physical activities to enhance enjoyment and foster skill and health-related fitness needs.

Extramural activities are defined as competitive exhibitions and programs that are extensions of seventh and eighth grade middle school intramural programs. Extramural activities are controlled interscholastic competi-tions between Fulton County middle schools. The following are permitted District extramural activities: Ten-nis, Gymnastics, Track, Volleyball, Basketball, and Soccer. Extramural Activities The District will follow all Georgia High School Association (GHSA) rules and regulations regarding participa-

tion in athletic activities as well as all State Board of Education Rules and State and Federal laws.

There will be no competitive interscholastic athletic program in middle schools except for extramural activi-

ties. This extracurricular program is offered to seventh and eighth grade students who are eligible under

state guidelines. All interested students must complete a Fulton County Schools physical form, proof of in-

surance, and transportation form prior to any tryout, practice, competition or exhibition. Students who do

not provide completed documentation will not be permitted to tryout, practice, or participate in any extra-

mural activity or event.

There will be no competitive interscholastic athletic program, including extramural activities, for sixth grade

or elementary (K-5) students.
