presentation of facts
What a research paper is not
• Not a dry or boring list of facts• Not a rewriting of someone
else’s work• Not a list of this happened,
then that, then this
What is Interpretation? T.A.C.• Take a fact:• We know William Butler Yeats lived in Ireland
• Add a fact:– We know Yeats wrote poems about Celtic (Irish)
myths
• Connect the dots– If Yeats lived in Ireland and wrote poems about Irish
stories, Yeats had pride in where he came from.
What is presentation?
• How you organize your paper• What order you put your facts in
Before You Present and Interpret…
• To present and interpret information you need to get your information first
• How could you organize your facts?
When you find a fact… What do you do with it?
• Here is a passage (edited a bit)• First published under Emily’s pseudonym (pen
name) Ellis Bell, the combination of its structure and elements of passion, mystery and doomed love…have made Wuthering Heights an enduring masterpiece…Bronte explores themes of revenge, religion, class and prejudice while plumbing the depths of the metaphysical (supernatural) and human psyche (soul). Bronte’s own home in the bleak Yorkshire moors provides the setting for the ….other-worldly passions of… Heathcliff and Catherine.
