We found it! Captured here in a moment of discovery are some
of the 35 children who recently participated in the library’s
popular annual Scavenger Hunt. Working in teams and using
clues, they circulated throughout the first floor looking for hid-

A long, long time ago, back in the spring of 1914, they were so happy to-
gether. There was Vera Brittain, an upper class girl with ideas of her own;
and her bright brother Edward; and his group of friends. Among the group
was Roland Leighton; a handsome, sensitive man for whom Vera had fallen. They all had wonder-
ful plans for the future, but then came that fateful day of August 4, 1914 when Britain declared war
on Germany. All their beautiful dreams were to be shattered one after the other. All except one ...

1932. Jimmy Gralton is back home in the Irish countryside after
ten years of forced exile in the USA. Everyone is happy except the local
priest; the village squire, and the chief of the fascists. The reason is simple:
Jimmy is a socialist activist. So when the “intruder” reopens the village hall,
thus enabling the villagers to gather to sing, dance, paint, study or box, they
take a dim view of the whole thing. People who think and unite are difficult
to manipulate, aren't they? From that moment on they will use every means
possible to get rid of Jimmy and his “dangerous” hall.

New Jersey has long been the whipping boy of
New York City and suffered from something of an
inferiority complex. Rarely has a Saturday Night
Live episode or a Woody Allen movie spared New
Jersey. But, ironically, beginning in 1975, when
Bruce Springsteen appeared simultaneously on the
covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines and
continuing with the fame “The Sopranos” brought
to New Jersey, the state has been enjoying some-
thing of a renaissance and the Jersey joke has been
in decline.
Michael Aaron Rockland is the Professor and
Chair of the Department of American Studies, Rut-
gers University. He has won seven major teaching/
lecturing awards, including the National Teaching
Award in American Studies. He has lectured in
some twenty-three countries around the world. A
regular contributor to New Jersey Monthly maga-

cluding scripting and acting in one movie.
If you feel hopeless about sorting your piles of papers or bins of photos then this
workshop is for you! Learn a simple one-step filing method for papers and
finally figure out which papers to keep and for how long. Forget filing cabi-

you need. She’ll also discuss junk mail, important documents, magazine clip-
pings and other papers. Then see how to sort those bins, bags and boxes of photos so you can pro-

overwhelming. Procrastinate no more; get started by attending this event!
