In the autumn of 2010, the RSAcommissioned arts organisation

Encounters as part of the Arts andSocial Change strand of our work in

Citizen Power Peterborough.

Citizen Power Peterborough is a joint initiative betweenthe citizens of Peterborough, Peterborough City

Council, Arts Council England and the RSA that exploresnew ways of making the city a better place to live.

Encounters created Take Me To,an innovative project to discover

Peterboroughs most treasured or inspiringplaces through the eyes of its inhabitants.

Moving across the city by minibus on a verycold weekend, participants hosted tours of theplaces that mattered to them, sharing stories

that were often personal or unexpected.

Rather than looking atthe city as defined by

geographical orcommunity boundaries,the city was mapped

by individuals and their

experiences.

Each story in each place was given atitle by the participants.

The stories to emerge from the toursranged from humorous to incredibly moving

and reflected the remarkable history of Peterborough and its future aspirations.

Accounts of Take Me Toparticipants reflect a

strong sense of belongingto where they live,

showing how art can beboth poetic and of

public benefit.

I take away from today a priceless chance to hear the stories of strangers. We might never have had

anything in common. Humbling. Mixy

The project culminated in a winter feast hosted at

Peterborough Cathedral, where participants sharedtheir favourite dishes and their experiences in takingpart, and made pledges about how to develop the

new relationships made through Take Me To.

M y biggest hope is that this tour can be spread further somore people can share this I can now view Peterboroughas somewhere that I could find my space in, a home, abelonging. Louise

You only have toscratch the surface alittle bit to see whatshere. Were all in our

own bubble but thetours have shown methat you dont have todo much to get out of it.

As cities face the challenges of economic austerity and anincreasing feeling of isolation, Take Me To has shown that

these can be overcome by the generosity of spirit reflectedin individuals and communities brought together in this way.

This event has certainly made me question myself about theway that I connect with my fellow residents in Peterborough.
