  • The UK economy is in danger of double-dip recession, job and public sector cuts are customary and pay freezesabundant. Yet bankers continue to receive large bonuses and the rich get richer.

At a time when the incomes of the average British citizen the 99% are being squeezed by low nominal pay risesand inflation, most argue that bankers bonuses are obscene given the state of the economy and merely stoke beliefsof deepening inequality.

6 Billion Ways, a coalition of campaigners on local and global justiceissues, are seeking change to the UK economic system as a whole. A series of short films, guest speakers anddiscussion will quantify and analyse what the 99% of people are doing about it.

In some cases, the answer is protest. London underground drivers asked for remuneration befitting having to work aBoxing Day last year were told no, so strike action was deemed necessary.

This follows on from the global Occupy protest movement in coercing governments to assess economic and socialinequality and review economic structures and practices.

The movement is now entrenched rhetoric of the peoples of 82countries worldwide. The 99% have spoken.

This 99% are being implored to affect economic change to arrest the trend of the UK government squeezingcommunities to ensure business as usual for an increasingly feral elite.

The collapse of Lehman Brothers investment bank three years ago reignited the credit crunch leading to moreexpensive mortgages and a domino effect that afflicted millions.

Fresh questions are being raised, which 6 Billion Ways will strive to answer: is this a crisis of capitalism, do we needbetter policies and regulation, or do we need an entirely new economic system?

Symptoms of the UKs perceived economic mismanagement include

  • threats of widespread financial collapse and public sector cuts, home repossessions, and record levels ofunemployment the antithesis of the ever increasing wages of corporate executives, declining tax receipts by therich, and booming city profits. Is it time to build and alternative, sustainable economy that really serves ourinterests?

On 31 January at 6.30pm at Rich Mix in London a fervent debate awaits as 6 Billion Ways surmise and actuatechange for the UK economy. The Archbishop of York once said is it right that bankers who helped cause theeconomic crisis should rake in massive bonuses?

You too, can project your voice as part of the 99% take back our economy!
