» BEST PRE-TRIP INFO IN THE BUSINESS!

We do not send our clients to any destination we have not visited ourselves. From the remote rivers of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the marshes of Southern Louisiana, to the sandy flats of the Seychelles, we have experienced the travel involved, eaten the food, fished with the guides, understand the seasonality, and exactly what gear and tackle is most productive.

Whether you are looking for a family holiday, a long weekend getaway, or a hard-core fish camp, we have assembled a catalog of destinations that fits the billing. Super exotic trips to far-off spots like Seychelles, Patagonia, or Bolivia are today’s cutting edge epic adventures, while the beachfront home in the Bahamas with tailing bonefish out back may be what you are after. The affordable three-day trip to Louisiana for tro-phy redfish is a homerun, specialized permit fishing trips may be on the menu, or a mountain destination with loads of non-angling activities for the whole family is an option. We have the first-hand experience and personal relationships in place to send you and your group to the right spot at the right time of year.

» FINDING THE TRIP THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

We do not pretend to be the experts on every single fishery or fishing lodge on the planet. Some competing agents will list dozens of lodges or outfitters in a single region. We know from fifteen years experience there is no way to maintain a sincere or realistic connection with a spe-cific lodge with such a cumbersome catalog of offerings. Managers, poli-tics, food, travel logistics, guides, the health of the fishery, and personal relationships change at fishing lodges often! Tailwaters takes a less is more approach by choosing to represent the best of the best operators in the business. Tight relationships and legitimate partnerships with our operators ensure our clients are properly paired up with a destination at the top of its game. What’s the point of offering 17 fly-out lodges in Alaska when you can cherry pick the best? We are not the Wal-Mart of the fly-fishing travel industry – and don’t want to be.

» NOT EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE!

THE PALOMETA CLUBASCENSION BAY, MEXICO

The Palometa Club is an American owned and operated boutique fishing lodge located on the famed flats of Ascension Bay on the Yucatan Penin-sula. As the name implies, Palometa (local colloquial word for Permit) Club is tailor made for anglers in search of a specialized fishing trip targeting the most elusive and glorified of all saltwater species.

Palometa Club’s scientific and sophisticated approach to permit fishing techniques, tackle, and methodology is unmatched. Owners, Dick and Kaye Cameron, have assembled, hands down, the best crew of guides in the region (2 Guides and 2 Anglers Per Boat or 1 on 1 guide : angler ratio). While the brand and reputation for success is geared around permit, guides don’t neglect the other species of Ascension Bay that make the fishery so diverse. Bonefish, tarpon, snook, jacks, barracuda, sharks, and many other reef species are also available year round.

Opened in 2006, the lodge offers comfortable accommodations, a lively atmosphere, and incredible Mayan-Mexican cuisine. The Palometa Club is anything but a “fishing motel” – rather a laid back, comfortable, fun, old school fishing lodge in the purist form.

TARPON TOWNCAMPECHE, MEXICO

The old Spanish colonial town of Campeche is located on the western side of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico and the Sea of Campeche. With approximately 350,000 inhabitants, Campeche offers a cultural experience unlike any other in the Caribbean angling community. The area is rich in both Mayan and Spanish colonial history, and the city has been named a UNESCO world heri-tage site. Stunning 17th century architecture, lively markets, incredible hospitality, great seafood, little tourism, nearby Mayan Ruins, and a remarkably clean and safe city make Campeche a delightful place to explore between fishing sessions.

The fishery features more than eighty miles of mangrove coast with hundreds of creeks and channels. Campeche is exclusively a baby tarpon fishery, and is considered one of the world’s most consistent and prolific juvenile tarpon des-tinations. There are very few tarpon exceeding 30-40 pounds… but lots of the little guys! The two main venues are the shore or backcountry mangrove fish-ing for 5-15 pounders on 7-8 weights, and turtle grass flats (8-12 feet deep) for schools of cruising fish in the 20-40 pound range. The backcountry tarpon fishing is extremely productive and lots of fun with topwater, tons of fish, and good sport on small rods. The turtle grass flats are a bit of a boat run and you need good conditions to pull it off, but this is really a special part of the fishery if it comes together. It is really cool to hop on the boat right in the heart of a busy city built on the waterfront. When you get the right conditions you will get exhausted with catching little tarpon.

HOLBOX FLY FISHING LODGE YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO

Isla Holbox (pronounced HOLE-BOSH) is a small remote island located in the Mexi-can state of Quintana Roo on the most northerly tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Holbox offers a slow paced and charming atmosphere with stunning beaches, sandy streets, a couple of hotels, and a half dozen restaurants. The lodge sits directly on the secluded white sand beach just a ten minute walk from the center of town. Itis a completely updated and modernized facility that will accommodate up to ten anglers in five comfortable air conditioned rooms.

The island is approximately twenty miles long and is composed of vast inland flats and mangrove lined lagoons -- perfect habitat for juvenile tarpon & snook. This nursery fishery and reliable summertime adult tarpon fishery combine to create a year round, quiet, and affordable alternative for the serious tarpon angler exhausted with the overpriced and crowded Florida Keys.

Anglers run in comfortable panga style boats approximately ten – twenty minutes in search of large schools of adult tarpon from May – September. On a flat day anglers usually encounter schools of rolling, cruising, and feeding adults in the 60 – 180 pound range. 95% of the fishing is done sight casting to pods of fish on or close to the surface. This “run and gun” style of fishing is super exciting and unique for even the most experienced tarpon pros.

Pursuit Anglers is our go-to outfitter for the Baja Peninsula. Baja, more specifically the Sea of Cortez, is a very special fishery that has a huge variety of available species to take on the fly both from the beach and inshore. By far, the ever-popular roosterfish is what most anglers come to Baja to chase. There is nothing more exciting than seeing a forty pound roosterfish light up on your fly only feet from the end of your rod tip. The endless miles of sandy beaches have proved to be the number one roosterfish destination in the world. If the beach is out of your league, have no fear. The opportunity for roosterfish is just as good or better from a panga sometimes as close as seventy-five feet from the shoreline. Anglers also have ample opportunity to also catch jack crevalle, pargo, african pompano and many other species that hug the beach. Inshore opportunities for a variety of species also exists depending on your time of visit. Billfish, dorado, grouper, and many other species, can all be taken on the fly while fishing the inshore program.

Guests stay in a private home on the beach just north of La Ribera, which happens to be one of the more popular stretches of beach for casting at cruising roosterfish. Food is 100% authentic Baja cuisine provided by local chefs and beers, margaritas, wine and filtered water will be available (all inclusive) at all times. Join us for a laid back week of fishing and fun in the Baja sun!

LOUISIANA REDFISHTHE WOODLAND PLANTATION

The marshes and mud flats of southern Louisiana are home to the best redfish fishing in the world. This affordable, year round fishery is only forty-five minutes south of New Orleans. Combine the convenience and fantastic fishing with the charm, comfort, and hospitality at the Woodland Plantation Inn – and you have the most popular destination in our travel catalog.

The Woodland Plantation, a 180-year-old restored sugar plantation on the west bank of the Mississippi, can accommodate any group type with spacious private rooms, multiple condos and houses across its fifty acres of bottomland hard-woods, wetlands, and gorgeous landscaping. Spirits Hall, a converted Baptist church, serves as Woodland’s restaurant and lively bar.

The late autumn and winter months must be booked a year in advance, but far too many anglers ignore the spring, summer, and early fall fishing, which can be every bit as spectacular. The marsh is also crawling with black drum, speckled trout, sheepshead, and frequent encounters with jack crevalle. Our summer inshore/off-shore combo trips provide opportunities for bull reds, cobia, jacks, snapper, dorado, sharks, mackerel, tarpon and more.

Plaquemines Parish has become a second home to everyone at Tailwaters Travel. It is a part of the world loaded with great friends, rich history and a beautiful fish-ery. We send over 300 anglers a year down to the marsh and know the angling opportunities there better than anyone in the business.

TURNEFFE FLATS LODGETURNEFFE ATOLL, BELIZE

Turneffe Flats is one of the most respected destination fishing lodges in the salt-water fly fishing community. Located approximately thirty miles from mainland Belize, Turneffe Atoll is a beautiful and ecologically diverse island in the Caribbean. It is also one of the easiest to get to. Belize City is less than three hours direct from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, and Miami!

Anglers enjoy fishing miles of flats and inshore habitat ideal for bonefish, permit, tarpon, and numerous other species. Bonefishing is orchestrated wading ocean-side flats for tailing fish in the two – five pound range, while other fishing is done from a 16’ Dolphin skiff exploring the labyrinth of flats, creeks, and mangrove lagoons. Turneffe’s permit fishery is considered one of the best in the world, resi-dent baby tarpon are around year round, and larger migratory tarpon also show up in the summer months.

EL PESCADOR LODGEAMBERGRIS CAYE, BELIZE

El Pescador Lodge on Ambergris Caye in northern Belize is one of the fly-fishing industry’s most tenured operations. Known for its convenient travel, diverse fish-ing opportunities, diving program, comfortable accommodations, and laid back atmosphere, El Pescador is one of our all time favorites.

The nearby village of San Pedro offers the best nightlife, shopping, and restau-rants in all of Belize, adding a social alternative to the solitude of the more remote fishing camps. In addition to a comprehensive eco-tourism program, the lodge also operates a diving and snorkeling outfit that frequents many of the world’s greatest dive sites. The main lodge’s twelve double occupancy rooms are private, recently updated, comfortable and air-conditioned. Guests can also upgrade to beach houses / villas that are ideal for families or guests looking for additional privacy and the added square footage. The lodge’s lively bar (equipped with pool table, darts, shuffleboard, internet, satellite TV) is a nighttime favorite, and the pool and multi-bedroom lodge villas have hosted hundreds of happy children on holiday with the family.

Anglers enjoy zillions of uneducated bonefish, frequent shots at permit, and a year-round tarpon fishery that rivals the Florida Keys. Whether you are looking for a hard-core angling vacation, an intimate family getaway, or hosting a corporate meeting, El Pescador should be at the top of the list.

ALPHONSE ISLAND RESORTSEYCHELLES

Over the last ten seasons, the Tailwaters Travel staff has collectively spent nine weeks on Alphonse Island and facilitated hundreds of trips there. We are real experts on all aspects of this destination, and are here to tell you that there is simply no better shallow saltwater fly-fishing experience to be found. Conjure up an image of the most idyllic sight-fishing venue imaginable, and then set your expectation level a notch higher... Welcome to Alphonse Island!

Anglers fish a very well defined fishery known as the St. Francois Lagoon; a 4 X 7 mile conglomerate over 10,000 acres of pristine flats and channels completely surrounded and protected by barrier reef. Alphonse and St. Francois can easily boast of the best bonefish fishing on the planet. In addition to the bonefish, Alphonse and St. Francois are also recognized as a top giant trevally fishery. 90% of the world’s fly caught milkfish are landed here, and around every corner there are shots at dozens of other species including hard fighting triggerfish, permit, parrotfish and much, much more – including a legitimate bluewater program for sailfish, tuna, and other pelagics.

The accommodations and facilities at the Alphonse Island Resort are completely over the top. DEEP WATER CAYGRAND BAHAMA ISLAND

Deep Water Cay is located on the furthest east end of Grand Bahama Island – approximately forty-five minutes from the commercial airport in Freeport. Situ-ated on a 2.2-mile private island, Deep Water Cay Club combines the charming history of an old-school Bahamian fishing club with the modern amenities of an upscale boutique resort.

Founded in 1958 by Gil Drake and Field and Stream editor, A.J. McLean, it is hard to imagine a nicer bonefishing lodge. The best way to encapsulate Deep Water Cay is to imagine “bonefish lodge meets country club”. Sound over the top? It’s actually just right, and they really do pull it off in an unpretentious way. DWC has incredible food, beautiful accommodations, pleasant staff, and a very tangible and charming vibe from 60 years of rich history.

It is also a venue for the hardened saltwater angler as well as the couples or family holiday. A multi-generational experienced guide staff runs top of the line Hell’s Bay skiffs targeting some of the biggest and least pressured bonefish in the Bahamas, as well as reasonably frequent opportunities for permit, tarpon, sharks, cudas, and more. With tastefully refurbished guest cottages or private home rental options, gorgeous clubhouse and infinity pool, stunning beaches, easy access with commercial air service, private airstrip on island, legit non-angling programs, tip top equipment, and 250 square miles of pristine surrounding flats – Deep Water Cay has it all.

BLACKFLY LODGEABACO ISLAND

Blackfly Bonefish Lodge is located on Abaco Island near the southern end of the marls between Marsh Harbour and Sandy Point. Abaco is one of the most accessi-ble islands in the Bahamas with direct flights from the U.S. Blackfly Lodge has an incredible multi-species fishery, and a very sophisticated approach to their fishing program that has reinvented Abaco’s reputation as one of the Bahamas’ greatest destination fisheries for bonefish, tarpon, permit and more.

Blackfly has also redefined the standards of which a Bahamian fishing lodge is run. The lodge accommodates a max of only eight anglers in PRIVATE rooms. Their newly constructed lodge was built with charming, old-school, colonial Bahamian architecture complete with wrap around porches, incredible cuisine, and more creature comforts than you will find at any lodge in the Bahamas. Their guide staff also has some of the most seasoned professionals you will find, and Black-fly’s custom East Cape skiffs ensure all anglers a comfortable ride in open water and access to the skinniest of flats. Blackfly Lodge has it all – but the secret is out. Best of luck finding availability as they are in very high demand!

MANGROVE CAY LODGEANDROS ISLAND

The Mangrove Cay Club is an upscale, but not pretentious, lodge run by amazing hosts, Liz and Alton Bain. Mangrove Cay’s efficiency is somewhat of an anomaly in the Bahamas - five star accommodations, timely guides and staff, amazing food, as well as top-notch boats and equipment. Mangrove Cay is located on the middle bight of Andros Island.

The lodge is well situated away from the busiest lodges to the north, and offers convenient access to the north & middle bights as well as a reliable off-shore program for dorado & wahoo. In addition to having miles and miles of productive flats in the immediate area, Andros’s famous west side flats are also a practical boat run away. First and foremost a bonefish fishery, however guests will also frequently encounter barracuda, snook, jack crevalle, and the occasional tarpon or permit.

Guests stay in double occupancy freestanding ocean view duplexes adjacent to the lodge’s main bar and restaurant. Rooms are air-conditioned, each with sit-ting area, as well as private bath and porch. Andros Island's most famous chef, Iyke Moore, prepares unique meals with a Bahamian twist. Construction was com-pleted in 2000, so the entire facility has a very new and fresh feeling. The grounds are perfectly manicured, and all the villas are situated next to a small beach and flats inhabited by the occasional cruising bonefish, barracuda or shark.

Whether you are an avid angler seeking some of the best fishing available in the Bahamas, or you wish to provide a quality vacation for non-angling companions or family with minimal travel commitment – H2o Bonefishing on Grand Bahama Island is the ideal destination.

The Pelican Bay Hotel is one of the newest hotel properties in the resort zone of Lucaya. It is located adjacent to a gorgeous white sandy beach and is within a two-minute walk of a wide variety of restaurants, loads of non-angling activities, as well as a new casino and golf courses.

Outfitters, Greg Vincent and Jason Franklin are passionate anglers who have fished, guided and explored all over the world from Tierra del Fuego to Cuba, and many spots in between. They have pioneered a very unique program targeting big bonefish and a number of other flats species not normally associated with the traditional Bahamas trip.

The remote north shore of Grand Bahama offers remote wading opportunities for bonefish as well as seasonal shots for permit, tarpon, jack crevalle, barracuda, sharks, mutton snapper, and even tailing triggerfish. H2o offers an afternoon offshore fly fishing program targeting yellowfin tuna and dorado as a combination flats / offshore day. ANDROS SOUTHANDROS ISLAND

Andros South is located in the settlement of Kemp’s Bay on the eastern shore of South Andros Island twenty minutes from Congo Town - miles from the busier lodges to the north of the island. Luckily, Andros South does not share its vast fishery with many competing lodges or guides. Andros South offers good, clean single occupancy accommodations with not a lot of flair, rather placing the empha-sis on phenomenal fishing with the best guides around. If you are looking for high thread count this is not the spot for you… Andros South is for the anglers who are on vacation to fish and play hard in a comfortable, relaxing, laid back atmosphere.

The vast fishery on the southern end of Andros offers some of the most diverse styles of fishing found in the Bahamas. What is most unique about the area is the fact that anglers are afforded nearly endless opportunity to wade. Most Bahamian destinations are limited to fishing from the boat. Southern Andros is made up of numerous user-friendly flats very accessible on foot. The lodge operates twelve single occupancy bedrooms, meaning that each guest have their own bedroom for the week…something uncommon and usually not cost effective at traditional fishing lodges.

“west side”. The extensive flats offer both fishing from the boat and arguably the best wading flats anywhere in the world. Andros offers anglers shots at the numbers as well as the chance for double digit trophy bones year round. Any day on the west side could result in a grand slam (tarpon, bonefish and permit on the same day). Whether its chasing the traditional flats species, heading out in the big boat offshore for the pelagics, bottom fishing for snapper and grouper, spearfishing and diving for lobster and conch, or chilling on a private island with the kiddos, The Lodge at 24° North and the Sur de Mer Guest-house offer a laid back, private, and completely customizable angling or family holiday.

Tailwaters has been visiting and sending anglers to Los Roques since 2004. We stand by the destination as one of the safest to visit, and most rewarding salt-water flats fisheries on the map. Los Roques is a series of 40-50 major islands located approximately eighty miles north of Caracas, Venezuela. Sight Cast and their charming Posada Acuarela are located on the main island of Gran Roque - the center of the Parque Nacional Archipelago de Los Roques.

Los Roques is a bonefish fisherman’s dream! The average size bonefish is a solid 4-5 pounds, all of the fishing is done wading, tailing fish are a daily occurrence, and there is very little fishing pressure. Traditional mangrove lined sandy flats, skinny water turtle grass flats that made the fishery famous, a unique beach fishery, and a 1:1 guide to angler ratio all combine to offer perhaps the most consistent bonefish fishing in the Caribbean. Los Roques also yields frequent opportunities for trophy-sized permit and a reliable year-round tarpon fishery. Anglers also enjoy encounters with barracudas, several species of jacks, parrotfish, and other reef species.

Gran Roque is vibrant with numerous shops, restaurants and bars. The beaches of Gran Roque rival the best Bahamian beaches in beauty with powdery, white sand and crystal blue water – a truly idyllic tropical paradise to combine as a couple’s vacation or complete angling holiday.

FLORIDA PANHANDLE TARPONAPALACHICOLA, FL

The panhandle of Florida is one of the nation's most popular vacation spots. Con-venient travel, powder white beaches, and upscale, family-friendly developments make for the perfect family holiday. A little further to the east, hundreds of miles of undeveloped sandy shoreline offer perhaps the most reliable and overlooked tarpon fishery in the U.S. The Florida Panhandle Tarpon fishery encompasses a stretch of coast from Panama City Beach east to the Big Bend. This includes Lanark, Carrabelle, Apalachicola, Port St. Joe and Mexico Beach. In the center of it all is Apalachicola, a small coastal community that defines “Old Florida” with its Victorian architecture and slow paced tourist charm. Captain Travis Huckeba, a local “Apalach” tarpon guru heads up a team of veteran guides in the region. Travis guides the entire stretch of this Florida Panhandle migratory route in the Northern gulf typically begins May 1st and runs through August. The fishery has an incredibly diverse set of environments to target Tarpon; everything from shallow grass flats to white sandy beaches. All fishing is done sight fishing and unlike the tarpon in the Atlantic or the Keys, in our experience these 70-200 pound fish more regularly eat the fly! Consider Travis for a proper multi-day charter or escape the sandcastle building with the family for a day and see what this incredible fishery is all about.
