This weekend 80 pear~ il!JO in March 1934
Tayside .. well, Dundee anyway, was buzzing on the eve ofLochee Harp playing a Scottish Junior Cup
quarter final tie at Larkhall Thistle . The Evening Telegraph of Friday March 3rd 1934 reported "Judging by the rush for rail tickets for Larkhall, Lochee will be an empty place tomorrow afternoon . It is expected that between 1,500 and 2,000 supporters of the Harp will accompany the team. The match is the 6th round of the Scottish Junior Cup competition and the opposing club is Larkhall Thistle , a team with a great reputation in the west. The Lochee boys, however are
confident that their success over Dunipace can be repeated at Thistle"s expense"
The game was drawn and the replay took place the following week-at Gtenesk Park. A letter to the newspa
per wondered whether it would be possible to fix up Tannadice Park "as the Harp v Dunipace 5th round tie had been played at Glenesk when 14,000 attended and nearly half had not seen
anything like all the game".
It went ahead at Glenesk. It was quite an occasion. A special train from Monifi eth and Broughty Ferry was
being run to Lochee, the fare was 8d and 6d respectively. Must have been quite a bit of congestion at the
Lochee station as the Monifi eth train was scheduled to arri ve at 2.30pm. with the Larkhall Special due at
2.32pm. The game was played on a snow covered pitch and Harp ran out 5-1 wi nners with all the goals com
ing in the second half. Andy Phin tell s us it was a great game to watch!
Junicus reported in the Tele the following week after Harp had been drawn against Bridgeton Waverley in
the semi final that "six members of the SJFA have turned a deaf ear to the suggestion of allo
cating one of the semi finals to Dundee [nothing much changed over the years with Tayport having to
travel distances for eight semi finals in the 90s and naughties]. Thousands who were looking forward to witnessing Harp in their next encounter will be hard to convince that Easter Road will benefit either club or Association to any degree" . For the record , Harp lost 3-0 to Bridgeton.
"Amateur Boxing at Tayport" ran the headlin e in the Evening Telegraph of Tuesday
March 13 1934 .. but it could welt have been "Seven Year Old Mid gets in Tayport Boxi ng Bout"
"The Tayport Amateur Boxing and Gymnastic Club which has just become affiliated to the Scottish
Amateur Boxing Association is holding a tournament in aid of club funds in the Temperance Hall ,
Tayport tomorrow.
An extensive programme is to be presented with the special attraction of an exhibition by Jim
Cowie , the Scottish 'Feathers ' Champion .
Full list of fights. J.Smith (fayport) v F.Mann (Dundee) ; J .Tennant (Tayport) v J.Miller (Dundee) ;
J .Summers (Dundee) v T .Berry (Dundee) ; R.McGrady (fayport) v S .Bell (Dundee); J.Campbell

Four midgets will also take part . J .Quinn (Tayport) v J.Buist (Tayport) and M.Hutton (Tayport) v M.Cavanagh (fayport) . The tatter pair are early started in the boxing game , being only seven years
old ".
THE BAIKER'S BIT
Good afternoon to the Port Support and may I extend a warm welcome to our visitors Maud
Juniors for this G A Engineering Cup 3rd round tie.
Last week saw us gain our first league shut-out of the season but unfortun ate ly, as it turned
out, we failed to capitalise , the game ending in a no scoring draw . lfwe were in a stronger
league position I wouldn't have been too disappointed with the outcome but it's got to be two
points dropped.
Kelty Hearts our opponents last week, like most of the sides in this division , know what's
required of you at this level. Their side is packed with experience , with arguably one of the
best defences in the division , we know that this area has been our Achilles heel so it's a posi
tive that we can give praise to our defenders and hopefully they can take confidence from
last Saturday's game.
Our opposition today arrive on the back of a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Dyce Juniors
who are top of the North Region Super League but prior to that defeat they'd been very much
on the up. We know we'll have a difficult task on our hands to progress to the quarter finals
but not one that can't be achieved. We've proved this seaso n that we're well capable of pro
ducing good results, often against the odds in cup-ties, so that 's the challenge today . If we
can produce the workrate to match the quality we have , we can succeed this afternoon and
progress to the last eight.

MAUDFC
It's a first ever visit to Tayport for Maud FC, their first to
Tayside for three years (Blairgowrie and the now defunct Ar
broath SC in 20 I 0 were the most recent) and first to the King
dom for five years (Thornton Hibs in a 4th round Scottish Cup
tie in 2008) so it's a warm welcome to our visitors from the
Buchan area of Aberdeenshire.
Although they surged through their section in the North Re
gion ' s League Cup before going out to Culler in the semi fi
nal, Maud had an indifferent start to their league campaign
before embarking on a run which saw them lose only once in
nine games before last Saturday 's loss to league leaders Dyce.
It was a run which propelled today's visitors comfortably into
mid-table .
Given Maud ' s location, equidistant from Peterhead and Fra
serburgh , it's no surprise that many of the Maud squad have
previously been attached to either the SPFL club or the High
land League club. A couple of the Maud players , Frazer Hall
and James Duguid, were attached to Aberdeen FC as young
ster. 22 years old Duguid, along with Luke Barbour and

Maud Boss Looks For Big Improvement Today
Maud FC player/manager Allan Hale at 26 is one of the young
est, if not the youngest, bosses in the Junior game. Allan was
pretty forthright with the comments in his website column at
the weekend as he expressed his dissatisfaction with his team's
performance v Dyce last Saturday. Probably stung by the criti
cism, expect his guys to be fast out of the traps today.
The Maud team boss expressed his disappointment that his team hadn ' t done better against
Dyce, who se 2-0 win at Maud ' s Pleasure Park ground sent the visitors to the top of the league.
Allan considered the Maud team, having played with a high level of confidence and arrogance
in recent games , had appeared to have turned a corner with regard to levels of consistency and
perforn1ance . Not so apparently although he thought his game plan was working well early on
against Dyce as his team was well on top in the first half hour and was looking to capitalise on
its pace and get in behind their opponents .
Things then changed dramatically after Dyce got the opening goal. The Pleasure Park boss was
not at all happy at the goal and considered that his players should have averted the situation by
fouling Dyce ' s Gordon before he got his shot away after the striker had taken possession when
the Maud keeper slipped taking a free kick 30 yards from goal.
From that point the manager thought his team failed to show enough character to get back into
the match . Said the boss " Some players had already accepted defeat at that point which was a
major disappointment ". He continued "when players roll over and accept defeat, playing with
a sheer lack of effort is unacceptable and that needs to change ifwe are to be successful at this
club. The ability and quality is certain ly the re within our squad and it's now that these players
need to show the desire and belief to win these matches" .

Tayport were in Super League action last weekend , with Kelty Hearts the visi
tors to the Canniepairt for a Fife derby. Given Tayport 's predicament at the foot
of the table, wins are imperative , so to gain only one point from the encounter
has to go down as a bit of a disappointment. There were, however, encouraging
aspects to the performance.
Sam Morris will have been delighted to record a clean sheet, Tayport's first of
the league campaign . Towards half-time, Morris made stops to deny both Ross
Philp and Brian Ritchie , while, after the break, he saved from Kelty substitute
Paddy Deane.
For 'Port Steven McPhee drove over the top after a positive , early run. He and
Grant Lawson almost capitalised on a mis-kick by visiting 'keeper Allan Flem
ing, but it was not until the final half hour that Tayport again threatened the
Kelty rearguard. During a late spell of pressure , Kris Rollo fed Grant Lawson
and he was thwarted by Fleming, while Rollo saw a powerfu l shot from dis
tance blocked by a defender .
So, given the relative lack of goalmouth action, the scoreless draw was proba
bly a fair result, but there was no shortage of desire from either camp.
Let's hope 'Port create more chances this afternoon , against Maud, in what will
be another stem test for the Canniepairt outfit.

Tayport and the GA Engineering Inter-Region Cup G\ engineering
Since it was inaugurated , the Inter-Regional Competi tion has been sponsored by Zamoyski Vodka,
Dundee North End Social Club, Concept Group, NCR , The Dugout and for the last few years, by
GA Engineering.
Tayport played their first Tayside/North Region Cup tie back in 1990 when they exited the cup,
then sponsored by Zamoyski Vodka, in the second round , beaten 2-1 by Lochee United. Maud,
incidentally , fell at the first hurdle that season, losing 1-0 at home to Sunnybank.
' Port's first success came the following seaso n when For far West End were beaten 2-0 in the final
at North End Park. Tayport won again in 1995, were beaten finalists in 1997, triumphed again in
2000 before winning four in a row from 2002 to 2005.
On only one occasion were Tayport's cup final opponents from the North Region. That was 2005
when Sunnybank were put to the sword by 5 goals to I .
Tayport did not enter the competition from 2006 on, deciding to reduce the number of possible
games and entering only one lnter Regional Cup, the Fiferfayside competition. Since then the
Fiferfayside competition has gone into abeyance and local cups are no longer contested resulting
in only 32 games being played last season , quite a change from the 43 in 2005. Entering the GA
Cup at least guaranteed one more fixture .
THE NEW LOOK OF SCOTTISH JUNIOR FOOTBALL?
The Junior game (apart from the North Region) is set to be revamped . The proposals on this page have been issued to clubs with a yes / no vote by next Friday to determine whether or not there is a willingness for change
The principle behind the proposals is to bring together the East and West Superleagues , i.e .16 + 12 teams , and form two new Superleagues - top leagues comprising 8 East and 6 West with Superleague 2 having a similar structure .
Lmplementation would be in 2015 / 16 based on final league positions at end of 2014 / 15.
The SJFA have summarised thus: - this proposed set up will enable Junior Football to meet: 1. The challenge from outside influences . 2. Move to the next level. 3. Increase competition . 4. Potentially more media exposure .

SNIFFING AROUND WITH THE SNOUT
Alan Cameron 's tenure as manager at Luncarty is over. It's only a few weeks since Cam-
eron left Newburgh for Brownlands Park , seeing the move up the A9 as perhaps an oppor-
!unity to further his ambitions in the game. For whatever reason , things have gone pear
shaped at Luncarty and the committee took the decision to sack their new manager . With
Murray McDowall , Cameron 's predecessor , only having been in post only since the start of
the season , the No 1 job at Luncarty could be looked on as something of a poisoned chal-
ice. Alan Cameron was certainly active during his five weeks or so at the helm. He brought
in seven players and transferred out two players .
Congratulations to Barry Donachie whose wife presented him with a baby boy last week
whom they 've named Caleb . Barry reports they are delighted by all the cards they have re-
ceived . Not surprisingly , most are yellow although there has been the occasional red one!
St Andrews United raised a few eyebrows last week with their 6-0 demolition of Linlithgow Rose in the East of Scotland Cup. Saints are the first team to reach the quarter finals . To refresh the memories here's are the other seven outstanding ties .
Arniston Rangers v Bonnyrigg Rose Camelon v Livingston United
Carnoustie Panmure v Blairgowrie Dalkeith Thistle V Sauchie
Penicuik Athletic v Bo'ness United Tayport v Fauldhouse United
Whitburn or Hill of Beath v Kinnoull.
The defeat by St Andrews last week proved the last straw for Linlithgow manager Mark Bradley who resigned his post before he even got back into the Recreation Park dressing room. And it was apparently accepted in similar haste . After an incredible run of success since his appointment , Bradley's team has been in freefall since Christmas , posting only one win in eight games. As one might expect , there is much ongoing speculation as to who might be his successor.
Elsewhere in today's programme you will see the Scottish Junior Football Association 's management committee 's proposals for a restructure of the Junior game as it affects all clubs except those in the North Region . The SJFA is canvassing opinion to determine whether or not there is an appetite for change . If YOU have an opinion , please advise a committee member before next Friday as the club is required to respond to the SJFA's re-quest for a YES/NO vote .
Today 's game is the outstanding GA Cup 3rd Tayport or Maud v Deveronside round tie . The quarter final draw gives the winners Montrose Roselea v Hermes a home tie with Deveronside . A reminder that the Luncarty v lslavale game today will be settled on penalty kicks if level Lochee Utd v Downfield at 90mins.
