A Note from the President by Fred Goodhew A Few Well Chosen Words ... (I hope)

There are some exciting events coming up the next few months. I wanted to make sure you know about them and put them on your calendars now. It’s never too early to start planning.

The First Ever TAG Theater Trivia Contest has been scheduled for May 12. Not an annual event yet, it looks like it will be so much fun that we will want to continue it. The event starts at 1 p.m. at P.S. Collectives in beautiful downtown Benson, next to the Pizza Shoppe, on Maple Street. Todd Brooks will be the Master of Ceremonies and has been working hard to devise questions to stump all the experts (you!).

Thanks go to Todd, who thought this would be a great fund raiser for TAG, as well as a chance for all of us to get together for some fun. There will be room for 16 teams of three people. The entry fee is a minimum of $15 per team, and trophies and prizes will be awarded.

Come to play or to support your favorite team. The Pizza Shoppe has wonderful food and beverages, and if you mention TAG when you place your order, they will donate 10 percent of the sale to the TAG Scholarship Fund. It doesn’t get much better than that: a chance to help the Scholarship Fund and have a good time, too.

If you’re interested in playing, send an e-mail to Todd Brooks at [email protected] with your name and phone number and the names of the team members.

Nominations Night has been scheduled for July 1. Our annual event is changing venues this year, moving to P.S. Collectives. This casual evening always provides a great time. We have a lot of fun finding out who has been nominated for this year’s TAG awards. The emcees for Nominations Night are characters from the past season and usually have us rolling in the aisles. You can bet it won’t be a dull night. Food, beer and wine at very reasonable prices will make the evening complete. We start at 8 p.m. and hope to see you there.

I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the theaters who have supported TAG Night Out this year. Thanks to their generosity in sharing their preview nights with us, and your generosity in attending, our scholarship fund is growing. Once again a number of outstanding high school seniors will be auditioning for the scholarships. Thank you for your continued support of all our programs!

*Brigit Saint Brigit Presents Translations Through March 4 BSB offers Brian Friel’s hauntingly lyrical Translations as this year’s Irish play. Because of Friel’s characteristic gentle and intuitive regard for individuals, his story conveys less a political statement than a dramatization of the way humans respond to conflicting feelings that result when nations collide but members of those nations do not. Directed by Cathy Kurz with Angela Dashner as stage manager, the ensemble cast includes Tim Duggan, Chip Frieden, Eric Grant-Leanna, Carol Knoepfler, Tom Kuhlman, Delaney Kunz, Scott Kurz, Laura Leininger, David Mainelli, and Eric Salonis. Performances take place at the Gross Conference Center in the Science Bldg. at the College of Saint Mary campus, 7000 Mercy Road, Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18/general, $15/senior, and $5/students. Both Florian and Vieyra were in the 1984 production. In fact, Vieyra reprises the role of Laurey that she held as a high school junior. Coover and Pitchfork were chorus members in the original cast. Special kudos go to Matthew Umphreys, who stepped in as show pianist, playing whenever he is not on stage. All performances take place at the Barton Theater, one mile north of Glenwood on old US Highway 275 (221st Street). Performances are Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Glenwood State Bank, online at www.millsmasquers.org, or by leaving a phone message at (712) 527-3600.

Laundry and Bourbon finds three women in Maynard, Texas, drinking bourbon and gossiping about the many open secrets which are so much a part of small-town life. The Laundromat is a probing, sensitive yet very funny study of two lonely women, one young, one not so young, who meet by chance in a late-night laundromat. Performances take place in the lower level of Central Presbyterian Church, 726 South 55th St., Thursdays–Saturdays at 8 p.m., with optional dinner service at 7 p.m. Dinner & Show/$23, Show-only/$13. Membership Rates to Change April 1 Did you know that TAG has not had an across-the-board membership price increase in more than 10 years? During that time, the costs of postage and printing alone have increased considerably. Right now it costs nearly $11 per member to provide just the monthly newsletter and annual preview guide/roster. You are probably aware that you receive a full year of TAG membership benefits for less than the admission price — even the TAG-discounted admission — to some local theatres. Membership in the Theatre Arts Guild is quite a value, and it will remain so. However, the TAG Board members have agreed that it is time for a small change in rates to support such initiatives as the Experience Live Theatre! billboards and full-color brochures and member benefits including workshops and other educational opportunities. Another change approved by the TAG Board is the option for two-year memberships that offer a savings over one-year. Effective April 1, TAG dues will be: Student & Senior $18/one year $30/two years Regular $24/one year $40/two years Family/Organization $35/one year $60/two years Additional family members $10/one year $20/two years

To Speak or Not To Speak Just a reminder that TAG offers a Speakers’ Bureau to come to your school or organization to talk about live theatre here in the Big O! Our teen reps can talk to drama classes and clubs as well. Please contact Pegi Georgeson, 330-7762, to set up a date with TAG.

Benefit TAG If You Have Your Taxes Done If you are planning to use a tax preparer to file your 2006 income taxes, you can get professional services as well as secure a donation to TAG. TAG members Les Schulz and Todd Brooks are accredited tax preparers. Todd works for H&R Block, which has a program to fund non-profit organizations. You can go to Todd or any H&R Block Tax office and let them know that it is for TAG, a non-profit organization, and give them the number assigned to TAG: 4000-98089-41141. Les is also offering a $25 donation to TAG for each new customer. For more information, call Les at 630-6254 or Todd at 698-5543.

Auditions will be held in late April with rehearsals during May and June and performances for one or two weekends in mid-June. The theatre solicits the director’s choice of show. The theatre pays $600 for directors, $400 for musical directors and $300 for choreographers. The rates are negotiable. Interested individuals should contact [email protected].

Trish Place in Residency at Children’s Museum Master puppeteer Trish Place, Urban Prairie Puppet Company, is in her third month of a Nebraska Arts Council residency in puppetry at the Omaha Children's Museum. She's there on Tuesdays 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Thursdays 3–7 p.m. and Sundays 1–5 p.m. At 2 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of the month, Trish offers a 30-minute puppet show. Other times of the days are make-and-take puppet sessions where kids and adults can make pop-up puppets, cardboard tube puppets and egg carton puppets. Trish will be creating a large Chinese dragon parade puppet to coincide with the Chinese New Year, which started on Feb. 18 and continues to the Lantern Festival in March. Kids visiting the museum will be invited to add "wish scales" to the dragon's body and help in the parade.

The Millennium Theatre Says 'Night, Omaha The Millennium Theatre is nearing its final curtain. What was once the home to Stages of Omaha and a temporary home to various other local production companies will soon be closing its doors for good, ending an eight-year run as one of the most unique theatre spaces in the Omaha metro. Its lease will end March 31, making BroadStreet Theatre Company's production of 'night, Mother the Millennium's last.

According to C.G. Wander, theatre manager, in addition to Stages of Omaha, the space has played host to over 15 different companies and individual performers, including SNAP! Productions, Spot Theatre, Rough Magic Productions, Kirkland Productions, TADA Productions, Baby D Inc., Little Apple Productions, BroadStreet Theatre Company, Route 88 Improv Company, Bad Rep Productions, international entertainer Jade Esteban Estrada, Rated Arrr! Productions, Ted Bailey Productions, Vinyl Revival, and Ralston High School.

More than 45 productions have been staged in the space, equaling over 500 performances and more than 35,000 audience members.

"It's a really interesting space and I'm sad that it won't be an option for theatre companies like mine any longer,” says Mary Carrick, BroadStreet's executive director and producer. “I've enjoyed working there, both as a producer and as an actor. Intimate spaces like this one are a tough find for homeless theatre companies. I didn’t choose ‘night, Mother specifically to be the last show at this theatre, so it's ironic that it worked out this way. It makes the theatre’s closing even more poignant.

Adds Wander, "I hope those who have attended or been involved with past productions at The Millennium will come out and see it one last time before we say goodbye. It's been a great run."

Wander plans on putting much of the theatre's contents up for sale, including set pieces, props, costumes, lighting and sound equipment, and building materials. Those interested in purchasing items may call 616-6709 or contact him via email at [email protected].

First Theatre Trivia Contest It’s time to take off the tap shoes, get the fat lady to sing and form your team of three to prove that you are the theatre-culture guru of the metro area. TAG will test up to 16 teams at our First Theatre Trivia Contest on Saturday, May 12, 1 p.m., at the Pizza Shop & Pub, 6056 Maple St.

Borrowed from The World Series of Pop Culture Show and hosted by Todd Brooks, the event is a fundraiser for the Theater Arts Guild.

Only 16 teams will be accepted, so get your application in to Todd soon, at [email protected]. The entry fee is a minimum of $15 per team.

Here’s how the game is played: Once the registration e-mails have been received, the names of the first sixteen teams will be put into a hat and drawn randomly to initiate first-round bracket placement. The following rounds feature single-elimination play. Each winning team advances to the next round.

During the rounds, the host will reveal a category. Once the first category is revealed, the two teams have 15 seconds to deliberate before sending a teammate to play for that entire category. The chosen players each get one question per round, and each category contains three rounds of questions of increasing difficulty (six questions, three to each player). If a player can’t provide the right answer, his or her opponent gets the opportunity to steal.

At the end of each category, the player who gets the fewest questions correct is eliminated from the game. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker question determines who remains in the competition and who gets knocked out. The first team to beat its opponents, eliminating all three of their players, wins and moves on to the next round.

A person cannot answer questions for consecutive categories. (If you just played a successful category, you have to sit a category out before being eligible to participate again.) The exception is when you are the only one remaining on your team.

The judge’s decision is final. When answering, use the lead-in “My answer is...” and then complete the question with your response. Once a contestant’s answer is given, that is the only response to be considered.

At the end, one team will be crowned the champions of Theater Trivia Challenge, winning a trophy, prizes and the adulation of everyone!

Team applications and game rules are available at http://theatreartsguild.com/downloads/Trivia_rules.pdf.

If you can’t play on a team, come cheer on your favorites!
