II. Abstract and Statements of Innovation

    Statement of Innovation

Tumblr.com is a social networking and microblogging website, founded in 2007, which

has grown significantly in recent years , and now contains 83.4 million separate blogs which1

together hold 37.2 billion individual posts . It is heavily used to post, share, and curate2

multimedia objects, such as pictures and videos. The site allows users to follow friends

accounts, and also to create their own metadata by tagging content that they have chosen to

publish. A users Tumblr account consists of both his or her own blogs homepage (e.g.

johnsmith.tumblr.com) and also a dashboard control page through which the user can add

posts and also view posts contributed by other users whose blogs they have chosen to follow.Tumblr was designed for viewing and use on a personal computer, but it has also released a

public application programming interface (the Tumblr API) , and several mobile applications have3

since been created to extend its applicability to smart phones and tablet computers. These

include both the official Tumblr apps for the iPhone and Android phone by the company itself ,4

and a variety of phone and tablet apps created by outside developers. There is not yet an official

tablet application from Tumblr, but the website itself has an option for optimized viewing on

    tablets such as the iPad.

One of the features that strongly differentiates Tumblr from competitor social media and

blogging websites such as LiveJournal, Facebook, Google+, and Blogger is the emphasis that

has organically grown up on the site for a type of cultural product that consists in activeappreciation of a (usually artistic or commercial) work and the creation of additional cultural or

artistic materials that transform that workin other words, a fandom. There are many other

websites serving fan communities online notably, there fanfiction sites such as fanfiction.net

and archiveofourown.org serve as repositories for transformative narrative fiction. However,

Tumblr has become one of the largest and best-known sites for multimedia microblogging

specifically. The Tumblr layout has been found by the fan communities to be well-adapted to

posting pictures, videos, sound clips, and myriad memes, and the user-created tagging that it

permits allows users on the main website to search, sort, and filter posts in fluid and

    constantly-evolving ways.

Unfortunately, the current offering of Tumblr mobile apps, and particularly the unofficial

apps for use on tablet computers, while they do allow for tagging and tag-searching capabilities,

do not approach the full tag functionality of the main Tumblr website. Our proposed application,

to be called Taggr, will fill this gap in the market by focusing specifically on tag sorting andfiltering. The feature that the currently-available Tumblr tablet apps lack is the capability for

discovery. All of the tablet apps available are primarily concerned with recreating the regular

Tumblr dashboard for the user on a tablet our Taggr app, on the other hand, will target users

who prefer using the main Tumblr website to search for tags outside of their pre-set dashboard

preferences. This will allow for greater discovery of content new to the user. The Taggr app will

also allow for increased discovery by offering the user a tag cloud of popular and trending search

terms, will provide autocompletion of suggested terms in the tag search box, and will save and

autocomplete tags previously searched by each user. Finally, Taggrs cloud of suggested

search terms will change in real time as the user completes more searches, altering to

incorporate terms that the user has typed as well as related subject terms.

    Statement of Significance

The Taggr app is a product that will greatly enhance the use of metadata throughout

Tumblr. Tumblr tags are frequently colloquial and focus on expanding the content of a post rather

than developing a structured metadata schema. Through Taggr, users will be able to harness

this colloquial tagging structure in a way that will allow them to build their own personal metadata

structures and enhance their use of Tumblr. Because the Tumblr tagging system is so vast,

Taggr will provide a controlled portal that will enable users to navigate the Tumblr tagging system

and clear and meaningful way.Taggr will also allow users to access Tumblr via their tablets. Currently, the most

frequent access point for Tumblr outside of a personal computer is a mobile. By expanding the

market of Tumblr related apps on tablets, Taggr will encourage the tagging system already in

use by Tumblr while encouraging users to become curators of blog content. Furthermore, Taggr

is going to take the touch screen benefits of tablet interaction and integrate them in such a way

as to create a fun and engaging way to curate, store, and share Tumblr content.

    III. Narrative

Enhancing the Field Through Innovation & Environmental Scan

The Taggr app represents an engagement on the designers part with a broad swathe of

academic and intellectual consideration: the study of social tagging is at a juncture between thestudies of information organization, culture studies, human-computer interaction and, in the

    particular case of Tumblr, linguistics.

Social tagging, broadly, is the use of informally assigned, user-defined kaywords to aid5

in information retrieval by identifying the object that they are attached to. For the most part, it

operates on a two-level taxonomy and has grown to be an integral part of Web 2.0, where

tagging functions on most social sites as user-applied keywords to describe content and

facilitate quick retrieval of that content later. For single users, tagging fulfils a very simple yet

powerful objective: it adds meta-data to a collection of objects. On Tumblr, the primary means6

of browsing navigation is through the tagging systemusers add tags to posts and browse

popular tags to find blogs if they dont already know of specific blogs or users to follow.Collections of users within a single social site can create their own folksonomy (folk

taxonomy) that can be subject to site- or community-specific idiosyncrasies and

inconsistencies. In the case of Tumblr, there is evidence that Tumblr users have adapted the7

tagging system as an additional location for commentary on a post, rather than the keyword

description that social tagging is typically thought to represent. In effect, Tumblr is creating its

own language and method of communication with its own set of rules based on the Tumblr

environmentand this is bleeding into the way users speak outside of the tagging space as

well. The majority of Tumblrs dialect comes from influence within the tag system resulting in a

lack of capitalization and punctuation because the tagging system Tumblr uses renders

everything in lower case without punctuation. While this poses difficulty for tagging-based8

programs due to the high volume of non-homogenous multiple word tags, it also presents a deep

well of data that can be mined by researchers in a variety of fields to investigate this aspect of

    participatory culture.

Social tagging represents the broadest level of possibilities for academic research

because it is pervasive throughout all Tumblr users and blogs, but on a smaller level, selections

of Tumblr users and the way they have adapted the tagging system can be important to culture

studies scholars, particularly those interested in the participatory culture of fandom. Tumblr is a

growing hub of rich artistic expressions for a variety of popular fandom communities because of

its blend of the more traditional social networking and blogging platforms. Fandoms occur as9

the natural collection of like-minded people who look online to find others who share their passion

for and interest in a novel, movie, TV show, play, comic book, video games, or historical figure10

and result in the creation of textual and visual objects that are referred to by academics as

transformative works within a participatory culture. Most academics who study aspects of

fandom participatory culture come from media studies or literary studies backgrounds, but

increasingly participatory culture is being studied by psychologists, information scientists, and

cultural historians. It is also increasingly prominent in broader societal consciousness due to the

popularity of works such as Fifty Shades of Grey, which began its existence as Twilight

fanfiction, and thus brings all of the periphery moral and legal issues related to fanfiction and

fandom creations into the limelight.Taggr, therefore, as an app that works solely on the exploration of a rich social tagging

system predominantly utilized by transformative work creators and consumers, provides a new

media tool that offers an advanced social tag browsing tool that has a particular draw for users

and researchers who are interested in the transformative works participatory culture that uses

Tumblr as its nexus. We believe Taggr has the potential for use by psychologists and other

social researchers and information scientists interested in the interactions between users and

the social tag culture on Tumblr. Linguists and other language researchers can use it to browse

through and study the organic development of the Tumblr dialect.

In developing Taggr and seeking to understand the ecology within which it will flourish, we

identified and studied three native iPad apps and the tablet-optimized Tumblr mobile site (seeAppendix I: Comparable Apps). To our knowledge, none of these competitor apps was

developed or is highly utilized by researchers interested in fandom culture, social tagging, or

    folksonomy development.

    Work Plan

Work on the Taggr app, after all functional requirements are laid out, has necessarily

begun with the writing of use case scenarios and a preliminary wireframe and design of the

apps layout and look. This latter has been accomplished on the Keynote presentation software

and has been informed by comparisons with other apps currently in the Android and Apple App

Stores, including those of our competitors. The next step will be to acquire developer status for

the platforms that we intend Taggr to work on -- Android and Apple tablet computers. Then we

will draw up a non-disclosure agreement, designed to protect our key ideas, and proceed to the

hiring stage of the process, posting advertisements for positions such as programmer, graphic

designer, and usability expert, and marketer. We will interview candidates, making sure to

require that they sign our non-disclosure agreement before releasing any proprietary informationto them.

Once we have signed on our new employees, the first task set to the graphic designer

will be to produce a draft of the main icon for the app (with input from our marketer) and to

produce updated versions of the original wireframe designs. Our programmer will be asked to

deliver an ad hoc version of the app using these designs, one which will only run locally on our

tester tablets, not yet for release to the App Stores. Next will come in house quality assurance,

in which we test every use case scenario to ensure that all are working as planned. At this point,

we will have every employee conduct testing to gather as much constructive criticism as

possible from within our organization, then we will move to a more structured version of iterative

user testing, led by our usability expert. The usability expert will conduct test groups, solicit userfeedback, and attempt to identify any areas of improvement. Then the app will be sent back to

the programmer or graphic designer as required for additional changes, cycling back to user

testing after each round of improvements. Marketing choices, such as the apps title and

potential descriptive keywords, will also be considered in user focus groups. When no additional

feedback is forthcoming from the user test groups, we will send our completed app to the

Android and Apple App Stores for review for inclusion among their offerings. At this point, the

marketers role will increase, as he or she creates written descriptions and screenshots for

promoting Taggr in the App Stores and elsewhere online.

Our evaluation of our success with this project will be based on a combination of the total

number of adopters who have purchased and downloaded our app, our apps rankings within thetwo App Stores offerings, and the spread of favorable features of Taggr within blogs and other

news sources focused on technology, Apple, Android, and on apps specifically. The

self-evaluation process will have to be an ongoing consideration, as Taggrs popularity increases

    or wanes.

Project managers Lydia Fletcher, Jordan Forbes, Franny Gaede, and

Virginia Trueheart will have primary responsibility for managing all data

related to the application and keeping the plan up to date with changing

legal and accepted practice. A neutral third-party will conduct quarterly

checks to ensure ongoing compliance with the standards outlined here. If

any of the current project managers depart the project, their replacement

will be trained and demonstrate competency in data management. If all

project managers retire and the project is shut down, any sensitive user

data (using applicable HIPAA standards for personal identifiers) will be

destroyed. Non-sensitive information will be preserved indefinitely on local

    or cloud servers.

    Expected data

This project will generate both sensitive and non-sensitive data. Potentially

sensitive data captured includes user input such as search queries andposts that are liked in-app. Search queries are collected only for the

purposes of populating the "trending" word cloud on the home screen of

the app and will be deleted at least weekly. Non-sensitive data includes

data pulled from the API (which will be cached for a maximum of three

days), proprietary software code, and the algorithms that produce the

"Related Tags" feature. Sensitive and non-sensitive information will be

stored on local servers backups of non-sensitive information will be kept

on Amazon Simple Storage Service servers and done weekly.

    Period of data retention

Sensitive user information will be discarded at least weekly and will neverbe shared. Non-sensitive information will be preserved indefinitely

portions of code may be made available via GitHub with a copyleft license,

but the "Recommended Tag" algorithm will be kept private.

    Data formats and dissemination

All user data will be kept in a SQL database and purged weekly.

Application data will be kept in .pyc, .java, .jar, .class, .h, .m, and .mm files

on local and Amazon Web Service servers.

    IV. Appendices

    a. Appendix 1: Comparable Apps

    i. Tumblr (Mobile-Optimized Website / iPhone only App / Android App)

    Why is this app successful?

The Tumblr mobile-optimized site and phone apps have the benefit

of being the official products of the platform. They reproduce thelook and feel of the browser version and offer familiar controls and

color schemes. Their features are consistent across platforms,

but the focus for the mobile products is on content consumption

the user experience has been polished to encourage this expected

use. Viewing content is a relatively seamless experience, with

    eternal scroll and straightforward navigation.

What is its rank and has it been consistent?

The official Tumblr app has consistently been ranked in the top 100

social networking apps in the iTunes App Store since July 2009

and the top 20 social networking apps since February 2011. It hasbeen in the top 200 overall apps since July 2011. The Tumblr app

for Android has been in the top 10 social networking apps. These

statistics directly correlate with a rise in traffic to their website, as

well in the last year, Tumblrs traffic has doubled. Their mobile site

views are up 50% over last year.

Why do people want this app?

With 94,828 total ratings, the Tumblr iPhone app currently has a

four star average rating. With 64,864 total ratings, the Tumblr

Android app currently has a four star average rating. Users like the

consistency with the browser version and familiar navigation anduser experience.

Has this app made the customer a raving fan?

People using the Tumblr app are already raving fans of the

product. They are vocal about the problems they experience and

the features they still desire. They are enthusiastic consumers of

each update, but easily frustrated by bugs and the pace of

    development.

Does this app provoke an impulse buy?

N/A app is offered free of charge

What needs does this app fulfill?

This app has several important features: it is official, its interface is

familiar to the user base, and browsing the dashboard is a

seamless process. Recently added search capabilities have

improved tag browsing, but these features are not particularly

    robust as of yet.

Did I become a raving fan after trying it?

Its clean, its simple, and it manages content consumption quite

    10

  • 8/12/2019 Taggr: Folksonomy Barely Covers the Half of It

    11/27

well. It does not yet have a native tablet equivalent and the

possibilities of tag search and browse have not yet been explored.

Will the customer use it again?

A small minority of customers will pursue alternative Tumblr apps

for a variety of reasons: theyre using a tablet, they want better

content creation capabilities, or they dislike the interface. However,Tumblr is the instinctive choice of most users and remains the

most-used and best-rated of the ecosystem of Tumblr apps.

How are they marketing to their customers?

Theyre playing up the familiarity with the browser interface the

same shade of blue (#2f4b66), the fav and app icon are nearly

identical, and the post icons are consistent. When visiting Tumblr

in a mobile browser, a banner at the top of the page will suggest

the user visit their app store to download the app.

What is the competitive advantage of this app?

As a free, official app actively promoted by the very popularbrowser-based site, Tumblr has a distinct advantage over other

    apps.

What does this app cost? Are there in-app purchases? Advertisements?

Tumblr has yet to monetize its mobile apps it currently makes its

money through premium themes (which cannot be seen in-app,

though they are visible in the mobile-optimized site), user-pinned

    posts, and sponsored radar posts.

    ii. Postr

    Why is this app successful?

Postr was released in April 2012 as TumbleBee and saw someinitial success as a relatively polished native iPad application in the

absence of an official Tumblr iPad app. Its visibility and user base

increased dramatically November 27, 2012 when the app was

made available for free for 24 hours and reduced the price for the

foreseeable future to take advantage of the positive word of mouth

    engendered by the giveaway.

What is its rank and has it been consistent?

Postrs rank peaked on November 27, 2012 when it was ranked in

the top 10 of social media apps and top 200 overall. Since

returning to paid app status, it has dropped somewhat in the

rankings, though it remains in a far better position than before

going free for a day. Previous spikes and drops in the rankings can

be attributed to price drops and increases, respectively.

Why do people want this app?

Reviewers point to Postrs minimalist interface, support for large

images, advanced content creation and curation features

(managing queue, searching and creating tags, reblogging) and

    11

  • 8/12/2019 Taggr: Folksonomy Barely Covers the Half of It

    12/27

pull to update gestures. Several reviewers mentioned that this was

the app they were hoping Tumblr would build.

Has this app made the customer a raving fan?

While only a raving fan would seek out a Tumblr app in the first

place, only a power user would be interested enough to purchase

a Tumblr client. That said, power users have their own uniqueneeds and require a comprehensive feature set and responsive

design team to attract and retain sophisticated users beyond a

    stint as a free app.

Does this app provoke an impulse buy?

As a free app, Postr is certainly attractive and full-featured enough

to draw a significant crowd. As a paid app, the screenshots are a

little lackluster the app looks far better on the tablet than in the

screenshots. At the $1.99 price point, it may be tempting enough

for casual users, but a $2.99 price point will narrow the audience to

those serious enough to purchase a Tumblr app when an officialclient could be released any day and the mobile-optimized site is

    relatively full-featured.

What needs does this app fulfill?

There is a definite gap in the market for an iPad Tumblr app, and

Postr is an attractive product with a well-considered feature set

and optimized tablet layout. Postr does well with large images and

image sets, which are very popular posts that are not always

well-rendered in the browser version. Reblogging activities are

considerably streamlined and facilitate a more active style of

browsing the dashboard.Did I become a raving fan after trying it?

Images are rendered beautifully and quickly. The navigation is

intuitive and the interface is superlative. The app was thoughtfully

designed for the tablet, integrating with offline reading applications

like Instapaper and enabling offline post creation and dashboard

browsing capabilities by caching recent posts, likes, and reblogs.

Will the customer use it again?

Power users are not patient with bugs if they experience errors

during their initial exploration of the app, they are not likely to return.

A superior interface for post creation and image viewing, however,

will be quite the draw. If users who downloaded the app for free are

pleased with their experience, they will refer their friends and

    followers.

How are they marketing to their customers?

Postrs free app day took the iOS community by storm the price

change was announced on most major Apple blogs and a number

of popular tech blogs. The screenshots are not as appealing as

    12

  • 8/12/2019 Taggr: Folksonomy Barely Covers the Half of It

    13/27

they might have been, but the clean, white interface is visible and

the gestural interface is well demonstrated. The icon design is so

boring that it has been mentioned in several customer reviews, but

its also inoffensive and repurposes Tumblrs reblog icon. The

developers website is very attractive and has excellent copy

describing the apps feature set. What is the competitive advantage of this app?

Postr is pursuing a differential advantage, offering a native iPad

experience with a clean interface and robust feature set for a

    premium.

What does this app cost? Are there in-app purchases? Advertisements?

Postr, as of December 2012, costs $1.99. Before its stint as a free

app, it cost $2.99. There are no in-app purchases or

    advertisements.

    iii. TumbleOn

Why is this app successful?TumbleOn was released on August 24, 2011. Over time, it

developed a thoroughly unique feature set that has not been

approximated or duplicated in any other third party Tumblr app. It is

focused on image consumption, creating an infinite scroll of

scaled, tiled images that can be tapped to enlarge. TumbleOns

distinctive feature is their analytics: any blog or tag can be

analyzed to present the user with a list of related blogs and/or tags

based on reblogs, likes, and co-location.

What is its rank and has it been consistent?

TumbleOn has consistently been in the top 20 social media appssince the release of version 3.1 on August 9, 2012. Prior to that,

the app was consistently in the top 100, but rarely breaking 40.

Why do people want this app?

TumbleOn offers a very different interface from the official Tumblr

mobile website/apps, Postr, and similar apps, opting for colors,

playfulness, and texture over minimalist design. The app

developers maintain curated lists of recommended blogs and

analytics encourage serendipitous discovery and browsing outside

    of the endless dashboard scroll.

Has this app made the customer a raving fan?

This app occupies an interesting middle ground between the free,

official Tumblr app and a power user-courting third-party app like

Postr. It offers some cursory photo-sharing and reblogging

features, but the development effort was focused in creating an

    innovative browsing experience.

Does this app provoke an impulse buy?

At $1.99, TumbleOn hits the right price point for an iPad app, and

    13

    14/27

its consistently high rankings indicate this is an acceptable price

point for a polished social networking app. The screenshots and

copy on the iTunes App Store page and developers homepage are

    bright, bold, and interesting.

What needs does this app fulfill?

In addition to filling the void left by the absence of an official TumblriPad app, TumbleOn brings discovery and browsability to a vast

quantity of content. The focus on images plays to Tumblrs

strengths and reduces some of the development time needed to

    support other post types.

Did I become a raving fan after trying it?

Images are rendered beautifully, though image sets were not

always presented as intended. The analytics feature is truly

impressive and would be particularly interesting for those

interested in exploring a new topic of interest or fandom.

TumbleOns developers have made a number of utilities they buildfor the app available under an open source license, which is very

    encouraging behavior.

Will the customer use it again?

Scrolling through TumbleOn is rather like scrolling through

Pinterest: its a never-ending stream of interesting and beautiful

things that are often relevant to your interests and occasionally,

bizarrely off-topic. It has the same addictive quality, with its pop-up

windows for enlarged images and effortless, infinite scroll.

How are they marketing to their customers?

TumbleOn has cultivated a design sensibility that pervades theapp, the developers website, and the apps Tumblr that is bold,

colorful, and quite playful. The screenshots and icon are bright,

graphic, and very attractive. Like Postr, TumbleOn was offered for

free for two days in late November, but this did not noticeably

increase their rankings, which were already in the top 20 of social

    networking apps.

What is the competitive advantage of this app?

TumbleOn is pursuing a differential advantage, offering a native

iPad experience with an innovative browsing and discovery

experience, along with a bold, playful interface that focuses on

    Tumblrs role as imageboard.

What does this app cost? Are there in-app purchases? Advertisements?

TumbleOn, as of December 2012, costs $1.99, a price which has

remained consistent since October 2011. Though the developers

curate a collection of recommended blogs, there is no indication

that these blogs pay for the privilege of being recommended. There

are no in-app purchases or advertisements in the app.
