Grass Roots Talk
Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this
Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie.
Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of WEMBLEY FC
for their first visit to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us,
and have a safe trip back afterwards.
We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Mr M.Simmons and
his assistants -Mr L.Hante & Mr R.Hall
Today's match is sponsored by Watford Printers and we would like to
thank Colin Sharman for his continued generous support.
We met today's guests back in November when we put in a great
performance to gain a 2-0 win
They are currently in 6th place in the league but will be hoping for a strong
finish to the season which could put them into the top 3. Kings Langley are
only 2 wins away from the title, however they slipped up at Hertford Town
in mid-week whilst London Colney kept up their great run which has taken
them into second place and still an outside chance of pipping King's for the
title.
At the other end of the table, Hillingdon Boro are relegated [subject to
any divisional movements during the close season] But who will join them
has still to be decided and may go to the wire.
We bounced back from a disappointing result at Sun on Saturday to beat
Hoddesdon 4-0 In doing so our young forwards are growing in confidence
with Kieron and Taylor creeping up on Chris Vardy for the honour of
leading scorer.
We have another tough game on Tuesday [Aren't they all at present] when
we entertain Sun Sports in the semi-final of The St Marys Cup
To keep up with all our teams results, fixtures and general club news.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,
changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another
pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3
including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.
The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned
which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.
Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the
Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped
down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through
the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.
South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA
In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.
In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established
itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.
in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists
in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.
In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also
reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including
Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on
the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,
defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the
league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.
The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the
Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We
also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only
winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior
Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior
Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.
We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.
The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The
Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.
The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating
Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a
newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield
for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the
sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to
become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12
major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as
did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies
had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing
surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.
Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance
with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in
place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down
in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement
with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.
Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in
the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We
were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A
Vase for the first time.
Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim
round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large
crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference
league
Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on
FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came
after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.
Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reins and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood
down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying
on in some capacity.
Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The
County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.
Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up
with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the
whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League
Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up
the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid-season and will lead the side in the Suburban
League next season.
Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the
higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in
2010/2011.
The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.
Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s
Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town
Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to
finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going
through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to
Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then
losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the
League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi-final of the Premier Division Cup and
were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James
Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies
team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished
runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground
and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.
A SHORT HISTORY OF WEMBLEY FOOTBALL CLUB
WEMBLEY FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1946 following an
amalgamation of various junior clubs, predominantly Sudbury Ratepayers
Association and Sudbury Rangers. Nicknamed the 'Lions', (the symbol of the
British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley in 1924/25, the emblem was also
used by the local speedway and ice-hockey teams), they found a home at Vale
Farm and have remained there ever since, developing a roped-off pitch into a
respectable non-League football ground.
Entry was immediately made into the Middlesex League. After finishing a
creditable fourth in their first season they went on to win the championship in
1947/48. A further season was spent in this league before the Club progressed
into the Spartan League in 1949/50. Here they stayed for two years, clinching
the Western Division title in 1950/51 as a result of which they became founder
members of the Delphian League.
In season 1955/56 they reached the finals of both the London Senior Cup and
Middlesex Senior Cup and also finished runners-up in the Delphian League. In
recognition of these achievements they were invited to join the Corinthian
League and subsequently vastly improved the facilities at Vale Farm.
Following a quiet period the Club moved into the Athenian League (1963/64)
which had absorbed both the Corinthian and Delphian Leagues to create three
divisions. Wembley were placed in the middle section. Malcolm Allison (1962-
1963) and Allen Batsford (1964 -1965) were both employed as coaches by the
Lions during this period, although their respective spells were brief. Both
gentlemen went on to have distinguished careers elsewhere and who knows
where the Club might be today had either one of them remained at Vale Farm.
Wembley did manage to gain promotion to the Premier Division in 1967/68. To
anticipate further progress floodlights were installed, a new clubhouse and
dressing-room complex were built and eventually admission to the expanding
Isthmian League was granted in 1975. Finishing runners-up in their final season
justified Wembley's elevation.
Wembley began their first season in the Isthmian League (1975/76) in the
second division (now the first division). The closest they came to promotion to
the Premier Division was in 1985/86. After completing their fixtures, Wembley
headed the table only to miss out on going up by two points when both
St.Albans City and Bromley won their respective games in hand. Only two
teams went up in those days.
Despite failing to achieve promotion, Wembley obtained some minor
compensation by recording various cup successes during this period. In 1980/81
they reached the First Round Proper of the F.A. Cup for the one and only time,
losing 0-3 to Enfield at Southbury Road.
The Middlesex Charity Cup was won outright for the first time in 1982/83,
while the Middlesex Senior Cup was also clinched for the first time a season
later with a dramatic 5-1 success over Hendon. In 1986/87 Wembley won the
coveted Middlesex Cup double with final wins over Hayes in the Senior Cup
and Feltham in the Charity Cup, a feat nearly repeated during the following
season.
Both finals were lost although the disappointment was tempered by beating
Brentford at Griffin Park in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, and
having the final played at Wembley Stadium.
Several unprofitable years have followed and a fire at Vale Farm during the
summer of 1992 almost ended Wembley's existence. Fortunately, thanks to
some splendid off-the-field work, new facilities were quickly erected and the
Club survived.
Wembley last won some silverware in 1994/95 with a 2-0 victory over
Hampton in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup. The Lions also went on to
reach the second round proper of the F.A. Trophy in 1995/96 (their best run in
the old F.A. Amateur Cup was also ended at the second round proper stage
1966/67 and 1968/69). However, their lengthy first division status was ended at
the finish of that season when they suffered relegation into division two (now in
Step Five).
By claiming third place, a quick return to the first division was achieved a
season later, but their division one tenure lasted just two seasons and they
relegated again at the end of 1998/99. As a result of the restructuring of the
Isthmian League's constitution, Wembley regained a berth in the first division
(north) for the 2002/03 season. But they were unable to maintain their place and
were demoted into the second division at the end of that campaign.
Wembley were forced to leave the Isthmian League set-up at the end of the
2005/06 season following the disbanding of the second division. They joined the
Combined Counties League. A sterling effort was made to win promotion
during their first season (2006/07)), but ran out of steam to end the term in the
third place.
Apart from that, they failed to make a real impact, although they did reach the
final of the Combined Counties League Cup in 2010/11, but lost to Sandhurst
Town, 0-1, at Farnborough. However, after their participation in the following
season's F.A. Cup, (their Extra-Preliminary Round tie with Ascot United was
covered live on Facebook) the competition sponsors, Budweiser, offered the
Lions a much-publicised deal which they could not refuse. This included the
signing of several retired professionals to help the Lions progress as far as
possible in the 2012/13 F.A. Cup under the guidance of Terry Venables.
Unfortunately, Wembley only played three games in the competition before
bowing out.
After eight seasons, Wembley's membership of the Combined Counties League
was ended by a lateral move across Step Five of the non-League pyramid, and
they will begin 2014/15 in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier
Division.

SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLAND PREMIER DIVISION Saturday 4th April 2015
Sun Sports 2 -0 Tring Athletic
( Ashley Lewis 21,Richard Pearce 90 + 2 )
Sun Sports completed the league double over Athletic, wrapping the game up two minutes into stoppage time. The first 20 minutes was uneventful, the only excitement was a corner apiece in that period, then a ball was played into space down the right, keeper Jack Hopwood sprinted from his line but striker Ashley Lewis got to the ball first and slotted the ball into the open goal for the home side. Athletics young side were finding it difficult to get into any sort of rythme against a more experienced side. Sun Sports began to dominate the game winning a number of corners. Athletic conceded two free kicks on the edge of their penalty area, one which went narrowly wide and the other easily being saved by Jack Hopwood. Athletics first shot on target was from Kieron Turner in the 35th minute which home keeper Ross Hampton managed to scramble away for a corner. Their only other opportunity was a shot by Greg Deer which flew high and wide just before halftime. Half Time: Sun Sports 1 0 Tring Athletic In contrast to the first half Athletic sprinted out of the blocks at the start of the second half and were unfortunate not to have picked up at least an equaliser. In the first minute of the half Chris Vardy ran onto a loose ball, rounded the keeper but saw his shot from an angle go wide of the goal. Just a minute later Ollie Hogg hit a terrific shot that went just wide. Athletic were creating all the chances and again Chris Vardy was played through on the left but keeper Ross Hampton smothered his shot, the loose ball ended up at Kieron Turners feet whose shot was blocked. With Athletic failing to score during this period Sun Sports regrouped, neither side were able to dominate and few chances were created. Substitutions were made by both sides, the first yellow card was shown to the home sides Craig Lynskey for kicking the ball away followed a few minutes later to his colleague Liam James for a late tackle on Chris Vardy.
The game was wrapped up two minutes into stoppage time. A long ball eluded Athletics defenders, Craig Lynskey ran through before squaring for Richard Pearce to shoot low and hard into the far corner. A disappointing result for Athletic, although with a little bit of luck could easily have got something out of the game following their domination and chances created at the beginning of the second half. Chilfest is back for 2015 UPDATE, Saturday's acts announced are Billy Ocean (headlining) ABC,
Limahl, Bad Manners, The Real Thing, The Blow Monkeys & Sonia. Tickets
still on sale.
Since announcing back in July that Chilfest would not be returning we have
been overwhelmed by the comments received from so many in support of the
event. We have now had a chance to consider your views and this, combined
with some exciting developments in identifying possible line-ups for a future
event, has led to a re-think on our part.
So we're delighted to announce that Chilfest WILL be returning on Saturday 10
July 2015.
Staging Chilfest has always been about doing good for the local community and
we're also delighted to announce that we have once again chosen Rennie Grove
Hospice Care as our charity. Despite the financial challenges of the last two
years we have donated £20,000 to the charity to help them deliver hospice at
home care and support for people in our local community with cancer and life-
limiting illness.
We'll be posting more details about Chilfest 2015 in the coming weeks on this
page and on our website but please share this announcement with all your
Facebook and non-Facebook friends and help us get the word out there

Hoddesdon Town 0-4 TAFC First team TAFC goals: Taylor Collins (3), Kieron Turner
Taylor Collins will grab the headlines following his hat-trick of goals but this was an
excellent all round display and on another day we would have seen even more goals
that our dominant display warranted.
A fairly even start and the match could have been so much different had Jack
Hopwood not made an excellent save with his legs after just 7 minutes when a forward
was clean through on goal. Last time out Hoddesdon Town had put 6 goals past Colney
Heath so they were clearly a threat should they be given the chances. Tring tightened
up with the central three defenders, Dan Stedman, Chris Salmon and Adam Toone all
playing a big part.
Both sides were finding, the flat but firm pitch, difficult with the ball bouncing high
and difficult to control, Athletics on the floor passing however placed them in
command but a number of near misses were seen before taking the lead.
Luke Dunston, who is growing in statue and confidence with each game, went close
with a header, Kieran Turner snapped up a loose ball to shoot narrowly wide and then
his free kick found Chris Vardy and the goal keeper, who was in for a busy night,
saved with his feet.
Vardy returned the compliment and set up Turner and his shot was again saved by the
Hoddesdon keeper. Turner was on fire and another shot just cleared the bar from the
edge of the penalty area. The 1st goal came on 27 minutes when Kieran Turner went
on a solo mazy run beating 3 players in the penalty area before calmly firing the ball
into the far corner of the net to open the scoring: 0-1.
Shots continued to bombard the Hoddesdon goal, Vardy shoots over from 15 yards,
Taylor Collins does the same following a well worked throw in, Ryan Sturges surged
to the touchline and crossed for Luke Dunstan to head just wide. Another goal seemed
inevitable and it came when skipper, Chris Salmon, found Chris Vardy with a through
ball and Vardy crossed for Taylor Collins to be in the right place just 6 yards from goal
to slot home in the 39th minute to make the score 0-2.
With time running down to half time Sturges again got behind the defence and found
Chris Vardy whose header was saved and just a minute before the break an Adam
Toone free kick found Sturges whose header was volleyed over the bar by Collins.
HT: Hoddesdon Town 0 Tring Athletic 2
Having put so much into the first half it was a slower start to the second but Turner
was shooting whenever given an opportunity and again went close from 20 yards.
After 52 minutes Sturges got round the back of the defence again, passed to Vardy who
set up Taylor Collins to side foot home from 6 yards – score 0-3
Chris Vardy having been the provider for the evening tried his own luck, having
robbed a defender of the ball, shot early and just wide from 20 yards.
The match got slightly heated after a back tackle by a Hoddesdon player and the
referee ended up issuing 3 yellows when a red card could have easily been shown.
Athletic increased their lead in the 65th minute when a long throw from Adam Toone
found its way to Taylor Collins who shot home to make the score 4-0 and also provide
him with a hat-trick.
Tring introduced 3 substitutes; Ryan McMahon on for Sam Joliffe who had been
dominant in the centre of midfield, Ollie Hogg on for Keven McManus who had had
his usual steady game at wing back and Lee Stobbs on for Kiernan Turner who had
opened the scoring and had had numerous shots throughout the match.
This was good Athletic performance taking them to 60 points and 10th place in the
league having scored 70 goals conceding 50. In achieving this we have exceeded last
season’s points total of 58 points almost matched goals scored (71) and improved our
defensive record (70) and with a very young team. Well done to the players and
management but there are still points to be won with just 4 matches remaining – at
Home to Wembley and St Margaretsbury and Away to Oxhey Jets and Holmer Green
plus a smei-final of the St Marys Cup to be played on Tuesday 14th April kick off
7:45pm at Cow Lane.
TAFC: Hopwood, McManus (Hogg), Salmon (c), Stedman, Toone, Sturges, Joliffe
(McMahon), Dunstan, Turner (Stobbs), Vardy & Collins.

TAFC Reserve team 1-0 Welling United
TAFC goals: Michael Green
If you look under "Punching Above Your Weight" in the Collins Handbook of Phrase Meanings
you will probably find Tring Athletic Reserves 1 Welling United (a club in the Conference
Premier) listed as an example. Welling had only lost 1 of the last 9 games. Yet this victory was
probably just about deserved and means 3 wins on the bounce now for the Reserves.
Tring were under siege for the first 10 minutes - conceding 7 corners - one of which was hacked
off the line by Captain James Cullimore. We were battling to keep our heads above water.
Smethers wrestling with a First Team Trilliast and Fitzgerald getting stuck in to avert the danger.
The ball simply would not hold up front. Slowly the lads got a grip and the game resorted to nip
and tuck for the rest of the half.
On 45 mins from a set piece Smethers was found in acres of space 10 yards out - but the ghosts
of Enfield Town returned to haunt him as he quite obviously did not have a clue what to do and
the chance was gone.
A few supporters were concerned that Tring were not playing tika-taka football and were not 4-0
up at half time but the Tring management were delighted with parity.
Half Time - 0-0
On 48 mins came the moment. Paul Jeffrey swung over a corner and Michael Green met it and
arrowed his header into the net. 1-0. The lads were on top - could they hang on?
They were doing more than that. Olly Butler had woken up and was put clean through but
missed. At the other end Grasso made a couple of fine saves.
The clock was ticking down- very slowly. On 85 minutes Tring should have sealed it. Olly Butler
danced down the right and crossed. Sam Joliffe was 6 yards out - he had to score. He didn't - the
ball sailed high and over the stand.
Tring clung on for a famous win and the lads had a great time in the showers afterwards
