Images Courtesy Pierce CountyA signi cant road closure related to a public

works project near Lake Tapps Park was lifted nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, Pierce County of cials announced last week.

A 1,500-foot stretch of 9th Street East, between 190th Avenue East and 198th Avenue East, was reconstructed to enhance safety by re-aligning and regrading the roadway to increase sight dis-tances; widening the lanes to 12 feet; adding six-foot paved shoulders; installing guardrails along the roadway between Hille and Bowman lakes; and adding stormwater facilities.

Crews excavated approximately 17,000 cubic yards (or about 1,500 truckloads) of soil while re-moving the hill.

The road closure was needed in order to allow the project contractor, SCI Infrastructure, to ex-cavate and then rebuild the roadway at a lower elevation.

Pierce County awarded the $883,000 con-tract to SCI Infrastructure in April. The road was closed on Mon., June 23, and was expected to be closed until approximately the middle of this month. Crews will continue to work along the roadway through September in order to com-plete planting preparation aspects of the project. Periodic lane restrictions are expected during that time.

In 2009, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a $500,000 grant to Pierce County to help pay for the project. The project is also being paid for using Pierce County Road Funds.

More information is available online at pierce-countywa.org/9th.

Photo Courtesy Tacoma RailTacoma Rail will open its doors this month to

allow the public to ride a train, tour locomotives, and celebrate the organization's 100th anniver-sary.

"I hope people take this chance to see the rail-road and the port from a view they can't get any other day," said Tacoma Rail Superintendent Dale King.

Tacoma Rail Open House visitors will have an opportunity to participate in free train rides around Tacoma's tide ats, walk through a loco-motive, get an exclusive peek at rarely seen rail maintenance equipment, rail yards, and other rail operations, and view model train displays. There will also be games, clowns, food, and give-aways. Tacoma Rail staff will answer questions and share stories about Tacoma Rail operations.

The Tacoma Rail Open House will be held on Sat., Aug. 23, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at 2601 State Route 509 North Frontage Road, in Tacoma. Limited parking will be available at the event site. Additional parking will be available at the Port of Tacoma's Fabulich Center parking lot, located at 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. A shut-tle bus will run about every 15 minutes between the Fabulich Center and Tacoma Rail between 9:15 a.m. until 3 p.m. The shuttle bus and park-ing are free.

The event is free and open to the public. More information is available online at mytpu.org/tacomarail/2014-open-house.htm.

Tacoma Rail was established in 1914 and is owned by the City of Tacoma. The organization's 14 locomotives, 100 employees, and approximate-ly 200 miles of track offer freight connections for customers in greater Tacoma and Olympia. Ta-coma Rail handles in excess of 165,000 freight shipments per year. More information is avail-able online at TacomaRail.com.
