President Jules Glanzer

Generosity and gratitude are two words that are con-nected. Two virtues, when practiced, make the world a better place. Two actions when expressed bring fulfill-ment and joy. At Tabor, we are experiencing both.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude for the generos-ity of the entire Tabor commu-nity. Over the past three years, the friends, alumni and people of Tabor College have opened their hearts and pocketbooks—generously giving over $14 mil-lion to the Signature Campaign; $10 million is for the Center for the Arts. Gifts have ranged from $1 to over $2 million. We have received goats, land, stocks, grain, works of art and, yes, cash and checks. People have given their hard-earned dol-

lars, money they have inherited, appreciated assets and life savings. People have given out of their abundance, others have given with great sacrifice. People of all ages have given.

Recently I received a note in the mail from my 7-year-old granddaughter, Avery.

In the envelope was $1. In school she learned about earning, saving and giving. Avery decided she wanted to give to Tabor College.

As president, I have often been humbled, at times brought to tears, and amazed at the generosity of our people Tabor. There is a deep love for our school that is being demonstrated in the outpouring of gifts. What the Apostle Paul said of the Macedonians, could be said of the people of Tabor—that you are “excelling in the grace of giving.”

Generosity is one of the characteristics of God. “For God so loved the world that He gave…” It is a

Christian character trait that when practiced makes the world more as God intended it to be. The Tabor people have been practicing godliness. Gratitude is a characteristic of Christ followers. When we recognize all that we have is a gift from the good hand of God, we have no choice but to be thankful. The Signature Campaign is bringing out the best in Tabor people.

At the recent President’s Dinner, the audience joined me in singing that chorus many of us learned in Sunday School:

He owns the cattle on a thousand hills,The wealth in every mine;He owns the rivers and the rocks and rills,The sun and stars that shine.Wonderful riches, more than tongue can tell -He is my Father so they’re mine as well;He owns the cattle on a thousand hills -I know that He will care for me.

The song teaches us about stewardship. If the song is true, then this past year He has decided to sell some of those cattle. He decided to sell some of the land He owns and cash in on some of the metals in the mines and the stocks that owned the mines. He has done that through the people of Tabor. He has prompted people to give and they have responded. Thank you for listening to the voice of the Lord and to that inner prompting of the Spirit of God to give and then follow through with a gift. Thank you for believing in Tabor. Thank you for trusting Tabor. Thank you for loving Tabor.

Some facts as of the writing of this article that might interest you:

• 2,250+ Number of campaign donors• 2 gave gifts of $1 million or more • 26 gave gifts exceeding $100,000 • 50 gave gifts exceeding $25,000 • 74 gave gifts exceeding $10,000

Quoting again the Apostle Paul, I believe it can be said of the people of Tabor, “For I testify that they gave as much as they were able and even beyond their ability.” Thank you.

Despite this generosity, as you can see in the Signature Campaign update on page 5, we have yet to complete the campaign and raise the needed funds to build the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts debt-free. The architect estimates that to build the Center for the Arts we believe meets our needs, $12 million is needed. The remaining amount in order to reach the $16.2 million goal is $2 million.

Will you continue to listen to the prompting of the Spirit? Will you consider helping complete the building of the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts? Will you make a gift to the Signature Campaign? Your sup-port is greatly appreciated.

From the President

Michael Spinelli has been named the new Director of Development - West Coast. The majority of his responsibilities will include networking with Tabor alumni and donors on the West Coast, while nurtur-ing and developing donor relationships.

“I am thrilled to join the Tabor family and help reconnect the West Coast alumni and friends to their Tabor roots in real and personal ways,” Spinelli said.

Spinelli completed his bachelor of arts degree in contemporary ministries and business administra-tion from Fresno Pacific College, Fresno, Calif., in

Tabor College President Jules Glanzer expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of every single donor who has contributed to the Signature Campaign.

“During the past couple of years, during this cam-paign, we have received gifts now from a dollar to $2 million,” Glanzer said. “We’ve received goats, we’ve received corn and grain and land and cash and all kinds of different commodities. As of today, the total amount that you and a thousand other people have given to this campaign is $13.4 million.”

A record crowd of over 315 Tabor College donors, faculty, staff and students responded with applause upon hearing the amount Tabor’s donors have con-tributed for this campaign.

“Thank you for believing in Tabor and thank you for trusting Tabor,” Glanzer added.

President’s DinnerThe Signature Campaign—the largest fundraising

project in the history of the college—will shape the lives of current and future students, for generations to come.

“The Signature Campaign is an ARTS campaign,” Glanzer said. “In addition to building a Center for the Arts, we also are committed to Attracting stu-dents, Retaining students, Transforming students and Sending students into God’s world. The Signature Campaign will help make this happen.”

Michael Spinelli hired as Director of Development – West Coast

May 1986, and a master of divinity, with emphasis in church and family ministry, from Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Fresno in May 1995. He went on to earn a doctor of ministry degree in pastoral leader-ship in May 2009 from Western Seminary, Portland, Ore. He is ordained for ministry with the Pacific District Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Churches and the Northwest Conservative Baptist Association.

Janie Brokenicky, assistant pro-fessor of choral music & David Martens, director of contempo-rary Christian music, sang “The Lord’s Prayer.”

President Jules Glanzer

Seniors Sara Sagner & Trevor Morris performed Irving Berlin's arrangement of “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better.” The couple is engaged and will be married in July.

Don Mahoney, Center for the Arts & Building God’s Way architect affirmed the BGW mis-sion statement to the appreciative audience: “To build God’s Kingdom by translating the God-given ministry vision of Christian orga-nizations through high-quality, cost-effective buildings and to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ on our job sites through the BGW Ministry of Construction program.”

Center for the Arts UpdateThe building committee and architect are working together to develop plans for the new Center for the Arts. However, new architectural estimates indicate a need for additional funds to construct the facility we feel will meet our long-term needs.

Our staff will continue to work hard to secure the additional $2 million in gifts and commitments that will fund our campaign as well as the added $2 million for the new Center for the Arts.

Will you join us in Completing the Signature Campaign?

The Concert Choir was chosen to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association State Convention on Feb. 27 at the Mary Jane Teall Theater, Century II in Wichita. The Concert Choir has performed at the KMEA Convention six times in the past 15 years and three times in the past five years. “To perform for this event, the choir competes with all college and university choirs in the state, both large and small,” Brad Vogel, Concert Choir director, said. “To be selected to perform—and with the regularity the choir has achieved—demonstrates that the quality of our performance is on even par with universities whose choirs are comprised of music majors, as well as with graduate students.”

Sara Sagner performed her senior voice recital on March 10. Sagner is majoring in vocal music education and special education. Her musical experience at Tabor has been enlightening and spiritual. “Performing is always a rewarding experience,” Sagner said. “But it is a spiritual experience to know that none of it would be possible without the Lord’s blessing. God gave me the gifts that I have—I didn’t earn them. All the glory goes to Him.”

Zach Neumann performed pieces by Mozart, Bach, Rachmaninoff and Liszt for his junior piano recital on March 17. Neumann is working on a degree in music. After he graduates in May 2016, he plans on attending graduate school and studying piano performance. He hopes to become a concert pianist one day.

Music toursThe Symphonic Band and Chamber Strings performed at schools and churches in Nebraska and South Dakota during their annual spring tour, April 23-27. The theme for this year’s tour was “Sym-phoniae Laudis,” which trans-lated from Latin is “Sympho-ny of Praise.” They close out the spring tour with a home concert at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 3 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church located at 300 Prairie Pointe.

The Concert Choir traveled around the state of Kansas for its annual spring tour, March 20-29 and per-formed concerts in 10 different churches. The choir closed out the tour with a home concert April 12. The theme for this year’s tour was “His Holy Presence.”

The Concerto Bella Voce Women’s Choir embarked on its third annual concert tour during spring break and finished the tour with a home concert on March 29. The women traveled all over the state of Kansas and to Fairview, Okla., performing nine con-certs in high schools and churches with the theme “Illumination.”

The Tabor College Department of Theater pre-sented “The Secret in the Wings,” a new play by Mary Zimmerman March 11-14. The adventurous play used

music and inventive storytelling to weave together cen-turies-old fairy tales, resulting in scenes that were often funny, sometimes strange, yet always captivating.

More Online Graduate Degrees

Tabor College in Wichita & Online has added sales courses as an option for three degrees: master of busi-ness administration, bachelor of science in business administration and associate of science in business.

Brett Andrews, executive vice president of Tabor College in Wichita & Online, recognizes a demand for these types of classes.

“We have heard from the business community that there is a need for college courses in ethical and effec-tive sales skills in entry level, experienced and leader-ship sales positions,” Andrews said.

The unique emphases, within each degree, are to accommodate students’ needs.

“Our MBA degree will now include a choice of a spe-cialization in sales management,” Andrews added. “Our bachelor of science degree in business administration will

Sales Courses offered for Business Professionals

now include a choice of a specialization in professional sales. Our associate of science degree in business will now include the option of elective courses in professional sales.”

There are also options for those not looking for a degree, rather, to improve their sales skills.

“As a service to the business community, we are also happy to have sales professionals join us for indi-vidual courses,” Andrews emphasized.

Courses are being offered in three formats and will be conducted at the Wichita campus one evening per week with one course at a time. Online courses will be broadcast via the Internet on a new Zoom technology that permits interactive two-way access from nearly all computers with Internet access.

Individuals seeking more information can call (316) 729-6333 or visit us online at tabor.edu/adult.

Online education is key for busy, working adults wanting to go back to school. That is why Tabor College in Wichita &

Tabor has formed a new partnership with best-selling author and American cultural scholar Leonard Sweet to enhance the graduate theological education program.

Sweet, as a distinguished visiting professor, will work as an active partner in the marketing and educa-tional processes of the master of arts in entrepreneur-ial ministry leadership degree program.

“Dr. Leonard Sweet and Tabor are both commit-ted to providing high-quality, educational experiences to their respective constituencies,” said Jules Glanzer, president of Tabor. “We both have different yet com-plementary missions. We are well-suited to establish a partnership for mutual benefit.”

Sweet said: “I am honored by the invitation of President Glanzer, whom I believe to be one of the most strategic and savvy presidents in the world of higher education today—a world which I believe is poised right where the church was on the eve of the Reformation. I look forward to navigating these uncharted waters with him.”

Sweet is a preacher and author, who has written more than 200 articles, published over 1,300 sermons and written more than 50 books. He shares the gospel with a signature, bridging of the worlds of faith, aca-demia and popular culture.

“In my lifetime, the world has changed from a Gutenberg culture to a Google culture, or what I call a TGIF (Twitter, Google, Instagram, Facebook) culture,” Sweet added. “I hope to join other Tabor faculty in helping our students learn the semiotics of this global Google world we are in, critiquing the perils, problems and promises of TGIF culture and pioneering ways to be in but not of, this culture.”

Rick Bartlett, director of theological education at Tabor, welcomes someone of Sweet’s caliber joining the faculty.

“Dr. Sweet is a deep thinker who will be able to help Tabor students engage with a wide variety of issues,” Bartlett said. “I’m especially excited for the entrepreneurial ministry leadership students because, as entrepreneurs, they will need to be able to make connections across a wide variety of disciplines. Dr. Sweet has the ability to help students make those con-nections.”

Sweet has emotional and sentimental ties to this part of the country.

“My heart belongs to the Heartland,” Sweet said. “Even though for the past 20 years I have lived on both coasts and taught on both coasts, I come from the Heartland. My mother’s family comes from the mountains of West Virginia, but my father’s family

Leonard Sweet is Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tabor

hails from the heart of the Heartland. In fact, one of my ancestors was the 12th president of Baker University (1879-1886). Being on the faculty of Tabor is a homecoming for me.”

Sweet is a popular and highly sought-after speaker throughout North America and around the world. In the past few years, he has spoken in the fol-lowing international locations: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, England, Wales, South Africa, South Korea, Iceland, Scotland, China, Indonesia and Latvia.

In 2006 and 2007, Sweet was voted by the Church Report as “One of the 50 Most Influential Christians in America.” He was also selected by the top non-English Christian website as one of the “Top 10 Influential Christians of 2010.”

Sweet’s responsibilities for Tabor will be to host student residencies, assist in creating/servicing cohorts and teach classes for the entrepreneurial ministry lead-ership program.

“Sweet is a historian and futurist who will be able to provide graduate students with insights from a wide variety of sources,” Bartlett said. “What I especially appreciate about Dr. Sweet is his deep love for Jesus. It shines through in all that he does.”

Sweet graduated with honors from the University of Richmond and earned a master of divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School and a doctor-ate of philosophy from the University of Rochester. He is the recent recipient of honorary doctorates from the University of Richmond (Virginia), Baker University (Kansas), Otterbein College (Ohio), Coe College (Iowa) and Lebanon Valley College (Pennsylvania).

Sweet has held distinguished lectureships at various colleges, universities and seminaries and has presented academic papers before major professional societies. He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences, state conventions, pastors’ schools and retreats.

For the first time in a decade, the Tabor College men's basketball team claimed the top spot in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference as they won their first conference title since the 2004-05 season.

The Bluejays finished the 2014-2015 season with a record of 15-3 in the KCAC and 19-13 overall, qualify-ing for the NAIA Div. II National Tournament for the second consecutive year. Tabor's season came to a close in the open-ing round of the tourna-ment as the team fell just short, 86-79, to 6th ranked Morningside College. Senior Andrew Thomas took home top honors for Tabor as he was named

NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and First Team All-KCAC. Newcomer junior Malik Brooks earned Third Team All-KCAC honors, while senior Dewayne Biggs and sophomore Lance Carter were named to the Honorable Mention All-KCAC Team. Head coach Micah Ratzlaff earned his first KCAC Coach of the Year award as his 15 conference wins were the most in his eight years at the helm of the Bluejays. Tabor ended the year out of the NAIA Div. II Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Postseason Poll. The Bluejays were receiving votes and finished No. 26.

A stellar year ended with the most successful post-season run in women’s basketball history. The Lady Jays, who won their first regular season title since the 2005-06 season, advanced to the Elite Eight of the NAIA Div. II National Tournament before bowing out just one game short of reaching the Final Four. Tabor lost to Briar Cliff University 62-53. The Lady Jays scored a first round win over No. 7 Marian University (53-50) and a second round victory over No. 10 Southern Oregon University (72-65) to reach the Elite Eight. The first year of the Tabor College swim-ming program was an overwhelming success. Fifteen swimmers competed in meets begin-ning in early October and culminating with 10 relays and 10 individual event qualifiers for the NAIA national championship in Oklahoma City March 5-7. The men’s team was small, just five swimmers, but each qualified to participate at the national meet. The women’s team also had five swimmers qualify for the meet. While the Bluejays were not able to score any points, the experience of a national championship this early in the program’s existence was invaluable.

Every swimmer who competed in the inau-

gural swimming campaign saw time improve-ments throughout the season, but more impor-tantly they represented Tabor College in the pool with integrity and class.

“I am extremely proud of what these swim-mers have accomplished this year,” head swim coach Nate Duell said. “Not only did they exceed performance expectations, they have established a solid ground for our program to grow and thrive going forward. The integrity and com-mitment that they have shown this year will do more for a better tomorrow than any perfor-mance could accomplish. Tabor should be very proud of these men and women.”
