• Let’s face it, every safety professional should already be using a smartphone and have the knowledge to work around it. If you don’t, please call 1-800-WOW to get with the times.

• While smartphones are great for emailing/texting and quick referencing via a relatively small 4-5” screen, the safety professional who is out in the trenches (literally) needs a larger canvas to work with so naturally tablets are the way to go.

• Based on recent research provided in the ASSE Professional Safety “Tablet Applications” January 2014 Issue, the iPad and iPad Mini are the best tablet choices.

• iPads do hold a heftier price tag compared to other competing devices but pay for themselves quickly.

• We will discuss useful safety apps specifically for the iPad & Apple App Store (Apps w/ Android market availability will be indicated by Google Play logo).

• Many of the Apps mentioned in this presentation are currently being used by my staff and have been tested in real-life safety environments.

• We test all apps before adopting. Several apps that we’ve found were infested with bugs or did not serve a big enough purpose to implement into our processes.

• We highly recommend you test apps and read user reviews prior to adopting.

REASONS TO USE A TABLET



Consider using a tablet if (not limited to):• You need access to the internet quickly and

portably. Example - While visiting a construction jobsite or conducting a walk-thru inspection at a warehouse. (Internet requires data plan or Wi-Fi)

• You are advocating being eco-friendly.

• Remember, “Green” communication eliminates unnecessary paper trail.

Consider using a tablet if:• You perform safety-related functions such as a

• Most of the apps mentioned here are free with some carrying a modest price tag – however we did find one app that can cost you four Andrew Jacksons ($80).

• We’ve found that connecting multiple company iPads through one business iTunes account is beneficial. Example: App purchases made on one device can be downloaded (automatically or manually) at no additional charge to other shared devices.

• When sharing iTunes accounts be sure to turn off iMessage and FaceTime in Settings as messages/alerts will be shown on all shared devices if those features are enabled.

• iAuditor is a free app that can be used to create daily reports and perform audits and inspections.

• The user can take photos with the tablet and embed them into the report.

• This app is also effective for incident investigations such as witness statements that can be captured using the tablet’s audio recording features.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)



• Figure 1 shows an ROI realized within 60 days.• Initial 30 days included time for users to familiarize

themselves with the iPad’s functionality.• Between the 30-and 60-day timeframe, users realized an

immediate efficiency gain compared to peers not using iPads.

Results are from iPad field tests at construction sites and manufacturing facilities throughout a 4-month time period.



• Travel time was greatly reduced due to web conferencing capabilities and instantaneous access to e-mail.

• Time spent in the office performing administrative tasks was reduced because tablet users performed those same tasks in the field.

• The amount of paper and office supplies used was reduced as forms, reports and documents were transitioned to digital form.
