Welcome back to another great year with the Greater Philadelphia Asso-ciation of Energy Engineers! On September 21 we will be kicking off our Season opener, as we root on the Phillies as they battle the Washing-ton Nationals. We hope you can join us to catch up on what’s been hap-pening over the summer and network with your energy community. Catch a ride on the elevator and emerge near home plate on the Terrace Level, where you'll find unparalleled views of the city skyline. Stroll into the High & Inside Pub and be wowed by its unique decor. The vaulted ceilings, plasma TV's and grand built-in bar enhance the sports bar ambi-ance. Mingle around high-top cocktail tables and barstools in climate-controlled comfort, or wander outside to check on batting practice and the pregame entertainment. The festivities will start off at 5:30pm at the High and Inside club. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served for the hour and a half leading up to the game. Game start time is 7:05. Parking is not included with your ticket purchase.

From The Presidents Desk
Welcome back to the start of another great year with GPAEE. I trust you made it through our extreme rainfall in August as well as the earthquake and hurricane that were thrown in as a bonus. Let’s hope that winter will not be as harsh as summer has been. So, without further delay….here we go, ready or not!
The GPAEE board met in July to plan the upcoming year’s events. We appreciate the feedback we received from our members on events and topics you are most inter-ested in hearing about. These are all taken into serious consideration as we plan our events.
Keep the ideas coming!
We kick off the year on September 21st with a networking event at Citizens Bank Park prior to enjoying a Phillies game together. This is a great opportunity to get reac-quainted with fellow energy professionals as well as meet new people in the industry with similar interests. This event sold out very quickly so if you missed out on this one, don’t worry, there are networking opportunities at every event so plan on joining us next month.
GPAEE has grown dramatically the past few years. We now have over 250 members and 25 Corporate Sponsors. Thank you to the board for their hard work in managing this growth. When you see a board member, thank them for their hard work and dedi-cation to our Chapter. This is a volunteer position and the level of commitment to serve is a big responsibility, especially with the growth we’ve experienced. I’m hon-ored to be serving with these men and women. They are the best. Be assured that they are always looking out for what is best for our Chapter and our members.
Take a minute now to mark your calendars for future events so you don’t miss out on some great opportunities. And why not plan on inviting someone to come along with you?
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!
Best Regards,
Ken Curry, President

PECO Crews Restore Service to More than 475,000 Affected by Hurricane Irene Working 12 to 16 hour shifts -- around the clock -- more than 4,000 PECO employ-ees, contractors and workers (from as far away as Pittsburgh, Florida, Michigan and PECO's Chicago-based sister utility ComEd) have restored service to 475,000 of the 500,000 PECO customers impacted by Hurricane Irene. PECO expects service to be restored to most customers currently without electricity by Wednesday night. Service for a small number of customers, with the most isolated damage, should be restored before the weekend. (more)
Schools looking to 'fracking' revenues A school district in Pennsylvania is looking to the land beneath it to fill budget holes by tapping into potential natural gas "fracking" revenues. Blackhawk School District, 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, has joined a handful of other school districts hoping to cash in on the state's "hydraulic fracturing" natural gas boom, stateline.org reported Tuesday. The district board voted in July to lease 160 acres of the district's land to Chesapeake Energy for $300,000. (more)
GE Hitachi nuclear venture wins work on reactors GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy said Monday it won a contract worth nearly $150 mil-lion to work on nuclear power plants for Exelon Corp. The 12 boiling-water reactor plants are at seven sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the company said. The deal runs through spring 2015 and builds on decades of work the company has provided on the reactors. GE said it designed the reactors for Exelon. (more)
President Obama Announces Major Initiative to Spur Biofuels Industry and Enhance America’s Energy Security President Obama today announced that the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, En-ergy and Navy will invest up to $510 million during the next three years in partner-ship with the private sector to produce advanced drop-in aviation and marine biofu-els to power military and commercial transportation. The initiative responds to a directive from President Obama issued in March as part of his Blueprint for A Secure Energy Future, the Administration’s framework for reducing dependence on foreign oil. GPAEE Cares!
Greater Philadelphia AEE Board Employment Initiative
The economy is tough. Many of our business associates are facing hard times. Even if the recession is over as many economists claim, unemployment is expected to increase in the next few years. Ironically, jobs are increasing in some energy fields. We invite our members and Sponsor companies to join the GPAEE Board in our Employment Initiative.
To help our fellow energy professionals, the GPAEE has initiated the following measures for unemployed local energy professionals:
1. Local unemployed energy professionals can pay a reduced fee for most monthly meet-ings. When registering for meetings, register under the student and unemployed rate of $5 for the specified meetings.
2. Unemployed members can post a free Position Wanted ad for 3 months in our newsletter which currently reaches over 800 people.
3. Free Job Ad on our newsletter Energy Job Board for GPAEE Sponsor companies and employers. Recruiters are invited to post jobs for the normal advertisement fee.
4. Companies with openings are invited to announce them at our monthly meetings. One of our local members landed a job with one of our Sponsor companies as a result of an an-nouncement made at a recent meeting.
National AEE has given a limited number of coupons for a half price national membership. This discount is for new members only. This discount is for employed as well as unemployed members. Ask for the coupon at the registration desk at our monthly meeting. Also, you can become a local GPAEE member without being a national AEE member.
The GPAEE Board reserves the right to limit the number of discounted attendees at each meeting. The meeting discounts and other measures are for unemployed energy profession-als. The definition of unemployed does not include retired or self employed members.
Jim Clark will be the main point contact for this effort. Employers and employees can contact Jim at (610) 325-9229.
Let us know how we can help you. Network at our meetings and connect with your local
energy community.
