Main Idea

• Physical and chemical properties are characteristics used to describe, identify, and classify matter.

• The measure of how much of one substance can dissolve in another is called solubility.

• Copper wire conducts electricity well; plastic insulation does not. People use physical properties, including electrical conductivity, to make useful products and separate mixtures.

Vocabulary• Physical Property: any characteristic of matter

that can be measured or detected by the senses

• Chemical Property: the ability or tendency of a material to change its chemical makeup

• Density: the mass per unit volume of a material

• Melting Point: the temperature at which a solid substance changes to a liquid

Physical Properties

• A physical property is one kind of property; the other is chemical property.

• A physical property can be measured or detected by the senses.

• Examples of physical properties are color, shape, size, mass, volume, length, and odor.

• Matter is often defined as anything that has mass and volume.

Chemical Property

• A chemical property is the ability or tendency of a material to change its chemical makeup.

• When the arrangement of atoms or molecules changes, a new material is formed.

• Examples of chemical properties are burning sugar. It becomes caramel. Tasty!!!!

• Burning would be a chemical change.

Density

• The density of a material is its mass per unit volume.

• All samples of a pure substances kept under the same conditions have the same density.

• Density is not the same as mass.• Ex: a bottle filled with plastic foam will float

because foam is less dense than wat-ah.• Ex2: a bottle filled with sand will sink because

sand is denser than wat-ah

Melting Point

• When enough energy is added to a solid, it melts to form a liquid.

• The temperature at which a solid substance change to a liquid is called its melting point.

• When enough energy is removed from a liquid, it freezes to form a solid.

• The melting point for wat-ah is 0 degrees Celsius and gold’s is 1940 degrees Fahrenheit.

Boiling Point

• When enough energy is added to a liquid, it changes into a gas.

• The temperature at which this happens is called the boiling point.

• Boiling point can also be used to identify a substance.

• Wat-ah and alcohol are colorless liquid but their boiling points are different at sea level.

Solubility

• The measure of how much substance can dissolve in another is called solubility.

• Solubility is another physical property of matter.

• Solubility can be used to separating substances.

• Ex: If you add alcohol to a to a mixture of salt and sugar, only the sugar will dissolve

Conductivity

• The conductivity of a material is its ability to carry energy.

• Most metals are good conductors of heat and energy.

• Materials that have a low conductivity are used to insulate conductivity.

• You should never use a current-carrying electrical chord that has frayed insulation.

• For example, water’s chemical makeup is H20 which makes it a compound.
