State of Alabama

Alabama joined the union as the 22nd state in 1819. It is located in the southern United States and nicknamed the Heart of Dixie. The region that became Alabama was occupied by North American Indians as early as some 10,000 years ago. Europeans reached the area in the 16th century. During the first half of the 19th century, cotton and slave labor were central to Alabama’s economy.

Cherokee Indians The Cherokee Indian Tribe was a powerful tribe of the Iroquoain family and they live in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. The Cherokee’s in the Cherokee Nation were for years divided into two hostile factions, those who had favored and those who had opposed the treaty of removal. Hardly had these differences they been adjusted when the civil war burst upon them. Being slave owners and surrounded by southern influences, a large part of each of the Five Civilized Tribes of the territory enlisted in the service of the Confederacy, while others adhered to the National Government. The territory of the Cherokee was overrun in turn by both armies, and the close of the war found them prostrated. By treaty in 1866 they were readmitted to the protection of the United States, but obliged to liberate their Negro slaves and admit them to equal citizenship.

Army uses 1838 Fort Mims battle for modern lessons

MOBILE -- Almost two centuries after hundreds of soldiers, settlers and Creek Indians died at Fort Mims, Army troops wandered the rural scene of the battle earlier this month as a train ing exercise in planning and tactics. The soldiers were mem bers of a Fort Rucker class studying to become warrant officers."It's a chance for them to study something in a text book and then come to the actual site and look over the area and see where this took place, how each side handled things and what could have been done different," said Chief Warrant Officer Chris Janis, one of the instructors.

Bentley wants state pension changes

Gov. Robert Bentley announced a plan Wednesday to overhaul Alabama's pension

system for state employees, teachers and other public employees who are covered by

the state retirement system.

It calls for setting a retirement age of 62 for most employees and 56 for law enforcement

officers. Right now, employees can retire after a minimum of 25 years of service. There

is no retirement age and some state employees who start working at an early age can

retire early enough to start a second career and in some cases earn a second

retirement.
