Behold the Melon-don. The What?

Most the fifth-grade students have done “scranimals” which are like a combo of two,

sometimes three, things in one. Scranimals is a mash-up of ‘scrambled animals.’ Most of

the time it is an animal and a food or two animals. For example, watermelon + megalodon

= Melondon. After they get a combo they make a poem about that animal. So, for the

melondon, this is poem that I wrote. Hope you enjoy.

Who gets up to hunt

at the break of dawn,

It’s the big and ferocious Melondon He glides through the water and shakes the sea, That shark is as big as a shark can be. He waits for prey all day and night,

That Melondon has quite a bite.

His wicked grin and his toothy smile,

Make him look like the Tacodile

When you get in the water and are about to swim, Look out for that colossal fin. When you see that bite in his colossal fin, Just remember he always wins. So, all because of the Melondon please oh please stay out of Scranimal Sea, Because, dear reader he already ate me.

Rickmond: Handel’s Behind the Scenes

I’m Ben and this summer I went to the famous Handel’s ice cream parlor and got a tour!

So, this is how you make the ice cream, the person pours some milk into a special machine it

spins around and around and its cold inside and lets in air, so it does not freeze.

I’m sure you go to Handel’s a lot in the summer! You probably must wait a little while. Want to

know why? Because people at the front don’t know what they want and try too many samples.

Fun fact: up to 100 customers per hour at their peak time in the summer.

Fun fact: there is an old jukebox inside when you walk in.

WES Buzz Poll: Pokemon v Legos

HI! My name is Julia, and I spoke to ten fourth graders about what they like to bring to recess

and why.

I like to bring Pokémon cards and Legos to recess. Some people prefer one or the other, and

some people can’t decide.

Most people that like Legos told me they like to build with them. People that bring Pokémon

cards said they like a lot of things, like trading them, battling, and opening new packs.

Below is a pie chart showing my results. In the end, most people liked Legos!

When the car stopped in front of a huge cage containing a golden eagle, that was the start of

an amazing day! One day in Hershey, Pennsylvania, my dad and I fed a Harris’ hawk animal

parts from a glove!

The guide showed us the golden eagle and held it in his hand! Next, we put our arms in a circle

and the hawk flew through my arms! It was so cool!

I drove off looking back at where a great day took place, hanging out with the birds!

WES Football: Players and Stats

This year school football has taken a turn for the best.

We are seeing double the amount of players this year than any other year.

We are not sure that you guys will like Stats (what the numbers tell you about the game) or

stories, so please tell us what you prefer.

Now getting on to the good stuff, fourth grade football has been showing some real talent.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we got recruited to the Eagles! We have good QB’s such as Jeff Wassel and Reese Allen, also players are excelling in defense such as Dennis Conner at cornerback.

Next time at recess no matter what your gender play football.

Local Music Scene: The Morellas

I’m going to write a review about my brother and his friends’ band: The Morellas. Members of

The Morellas are: Arch Morrison, William Wallace, Jonah Farber, and Luke Young. Arch, Jonah

and Luke all went to WES!

They’ve had a lot of concerts (mostly at their friend Tuckers’ house cause his house has the

room).

So, if you have an older brother/sister that goes to RMS, than come to their concert cause’ I’m

sure they’ll mention it online. I’m talking to you Archie!!!!

I am actually going to be their project/assistant manager. (If I can get them a concert).

We’ve thought of merchandise we’re going to order and slap the Morellas logo on there (we’ve

almost figured THAT out). Like markers for kids, fiber bars, and Morellas toasters that toasts

their faces on the bread!

The Morellas are sponsored by “Grow The Scene.” I’ll talk to them later about their next venue.

Your Guide to the 5 WES Specials

Dear Reader, here you will learn what you should do in specials, and these rules aren’t only for kindergartners but up to fifth grade. Library. First you will walk in quietly, you will either go in the Janson room or to your colored table. Stay

quiet while Mrs. Dahlstrom or Mrs. Burns are speaking. In library, you will choose a book.

Art.

In art it is the same thing, come in, take a seat and wait quietly for instructions. If you are

painting, please do NOT paint on anyone else or even you. Please do NOT draw on tables and

the floor with a marker.

Please be respectful to Ms. Gallagher. In art, you will work on arts and crafts.

Wellness.Ok, you know the drill, say “good morning” or “good afternoon,” sit down quietly and

wait for instructions. In wellness, you will mostly learn about the human body and what it does.

Music. Please do not talk while Ms. Fields is playing music or talking. In your squad spots, you should

NOT talk to your friends. In music, you will learn about music and play some too!

Gym. This one is a biggie, I know we all love gym, so please be respectful and you will have more me to play games, ok? In gym, you play fun games like gaga ball!

If you follow these rules, you’ll be a prize pupil!

Meet our new Dean of Students, Mrs. Esposito

Have you or an older brother or sister ever had Mrs. Esposito as a teacher? Well I was lucky

enough to have her as my 3rd grade teacher.

Now Mrs. Esposito moved on to being the Dean of Students. This is her first year being the

Dean of Students. I had the privilege to interview Mrs. Esposito to learn more about the Dean

of Students. You will see Mrs. Esposito on some days but on other days, she is at Radnor

Elementary School.

When she is at WES, she is working on behavior, lunch and recess. Mrs. Esposito misses having

close relationships with students but now she gets to help many more students. The main

reason that Mrs. Esposito became the Dean of Students is that she is always looking for new

challenges. She did not have to go back to college for this job, but it was good she went and

earned a principal’s certificate.

So far, Mrs. Esposito is really enjoying the new job. I believe that Mrs. Esposito would go out of

her way to help any student that has a ques on or needs help at WES. I’m very happy that I had

Mrs. Esposito as a teacher and believe that she will be a great Dean of Students!

Fifth Grade Recess Is Super Fun

In the fifth grade recess a bunch of people play basketball, a bunch of people play football, and

a couple people play soccer. There’s also some that play on the playground.

Fifth grade recess starts at 11:40 am and ends at 12:05 pm, then we start lunch. We use the

field next to the soccer field for football, the soccer field for soccer, and the blacktop for

basketball.

When it’s "Blacktop Only" for recess, football is played, same with basketball, though I don’t

think soccer is played for a blacktop only recess. Mr. T, Ms. T, and Ms. Priya supervise us at

recess.

Some people play "Four Square" too.

Fifth grade recess is super fun.

In Four Square, there are four individual squares painted different colors. (See photo).

One person stands in each square.

There are four different positions you can be in. The positoons are: Jack, Queen, King, Ace –

one for each square. The Ace always serves the ball. The Ace hits the ball with his/her hand into

another square.

There are many ways to get out but the number one way of ge ng out is doing a "Cherry Bomb."

A Cherry Bomb is when you bounce it so high the other players can’t get the ball.

If the Ace got out, then the Ace would move to Jack, the King would move to Ace, so on and so

on.

Author Up Close: Zhang Meets Jen Calonita

There was a book fair (that’s what my mom and dad call it) where I met Jen Calonita, an author

who writes one of my favorite book series, Fairy Tale Reform School. I was soooo excited in my

Dad’s car going to Children’s Book World in Haverford to meet Jen Calonita!!! Mrs. Dahlstrom,

our amazing WES librarian, had called my Dad to be sure we knew it was happening.

"Oh!!! We’re finally here!!!," I thought when we arrived.

When I entered with my Dad, I saw a lot of books. Jen Calonita greeted Dad and me. She has

blonde hair, brown eyes and is very nice. She showed me how to make a wand. She started to

make one herself, too. Soon, more people came in. When I had just finished my wand, my dad

decided to buy me a book.

Jen Calonita said that she has written the fifth book in the Fairy Tale series but it won’t come

out un l March. But she did show us the cover. It’s called Wishes. There was also another book

called Misfits, and it was on the shelf so we got that one. I did get it autographed (and her

email for questions).

Jen Calonita said that Misfits was the first book to a new series, and she wrote this book

because she said, “Have you ever wondered what goes on the other side of the Fairy Tale

Reform School?” So, this is called Royal Academy Rebels.

(I am very sorry if you don’t understand a word I am saying right now, so you should go and

read the book!!!)

Jen Calonita handed a sheet of tests and my favorite one was the test of where you would fit;

the Royal Academy Rebels or the Fairy Tale Reform School. I got the Fairy Tale Reform school.

Summer Travel: Los Angeles, San Diego

Hi!

How was your summer break? Mine was awesome!!! Read on to find out what happens about

my trip to California!

(I made it so it would look like you came too!)

My family and I are packing our suitcases at night. Luke and I would have been going to school

tomorrow but we were all going to California tomorrow.

We are going on the airplane right now. We’ll be there in quite a few hours. But I absolutely

HATE going on planes.

But now, we are landing.

“TAXI!!! Over here!!!” (That was me screaming.)

We are now going to go rent a car and go to a hotel. We are in Los Angeles.

We rented a car and got in a hotel and in our hotel room.

“Well, good night!!!” I am going to bed.

“Good morning.” I am first to wake up. Well, mom is, but she is quiet on her phone or iPad.

Finally, everyone wakes up. We get ready, and the day begins.

Breakfast. I was hungry. And I even made myself hot chocolate. After everyone was done, we

all headed back to our room.

“Dad, where are we going? Is it Hollywood?” I ask.

“That’s where we are going,” Dad says. YAY!!! I AM SOOOO EXCITED!!!

The trip there was about 30 minutes. We even saw a sign that said, “Welcome to Hollywood.”

It was soooo fun!!! I went to the Harry Potter sec on and got a wand that actually works there.

There was also a show where animals (like puppies, birds, pigs, and more) do tricks and they

are trained very well.

There was also a drink named Butter Beer. Dad wanted to get it. So, he did. But it was a

children’s drink, so Luke and I shared it. Soon, it was me to go back home.

The next day, we all went back to Hollywood, Universal Studios. I brought my wand to do more

magic tricks. Also, we went on a roller coaster. The sign said that we would get wet, but instead

we got soaked!!!

Now, on the third day, we went in the car to go allll the way to San Diego, by lunch me. So, we

all went out for lunch after we got a hotel room. After lunch, we all went to a cruise for a trip

around. We saw the army tanks and stuff.

And after that, dad went out to go get pizza. The pizza was good. Then, we all got ready for

bed.

“Good Night Everyone!!!”

In the morning, we all got breakfast. After breakfast, we all went to our hotel room to prepare.

We set off for Safari Park. There were a LOT of shows there. My favorite was probably, I think

it’s called, "A Dog’s Purpose." It was about dogs. The next day, we went to Sea World. I got

my face painted. Now there was a panda on my cheek.

Today was now the last day. But it was my favorite. We went to the San Diego Zoo. I got to see

real live pandas. YAY!!!!!!! (That was me screaming) I even got my own stuffed panda. But it

looks soooo real. (Except for the bamboo) We went home today. But I had soooo much fun.

Great Reads: Warriors

I am going to tell you about a book series I’m reading called Warriors. Altogether there are 42

books across the six series!

It’s about four clans of wild cats – Thunderclan, Shadowclan, Windclan, and Riverclan. The clans

are all enemies of each other and fight for prey, territory, shelter and water because it’s the

only way to survive in the woods. Warriors call humans “twolegs” and roads “thunderpaths.”

Cars are called “monsters.”

Steps of a warrior cat

The steps of a warrior are when they earn their warrior name: sometimes to deputy or to

leader. First, they are “kits,” where the last part of their name is “kit.” Then when they are six

moons (meaning months) old, they become apprentices, in training to become warriors or

“medicine cat,”, and they take the last name “paw.” Warriors become mentors to the

apprentices, the medicine cat also takes an apprentice.

When an apprentice proves themselves right, they earn their warrior name. For example, in the

first series, an apprentice named Firepaw becomes Fireheart. When a cat is a warrior, they take

the last part of their name “Heart”, “Claw”, “Tail”, “Pool,” and so on. The medicine cat is a cat

who treats the warriors wounds and sicknesses using different plants and materials. When the

deputy of the clan dies, a new warrior becomes deputy, then when the leader of the clan dies,

the deputy becomes leader and appoints a new deputy.

Warrior code

Warriors should be free and wild, but there are rules, too. I don’t know all the warrior code, but

I know some of it: The main idea of the code is to put the clan before you, like if a cat is out

hunting, he/she can’t eat what they catch, they have to take it back to their territory, so the

clan gets fed first. Another thing, which really isn’t a rule, all deputies must travel to the

moonstone to share dreams with Starclan when they become leader. [ see later in review ].

Another thing is that you can’t just kill a cat when you

fight, you fight to show your strength. If you break the warrior code, you get punished.

Starclan and the moonstone

Starclan is a clan in the stars of something called “silverpelt.” Silverpelt is a band of stars in the

sky and each star is a dead warrior. Medicine cats get special omens from Starclan to tell the

leader. The moonstone is a giant glittering stone inside a small undergrowth tunnel called

“mothermouth.” When the leaders need to, they sleep in mothermouth near the moonstone.

Then when the deputy becomes leader, they take the last name “star.” In the first series, the

leaders name is Bluestar.

“Into the Wild”

In the “Into the wild” series, Thunderclan weakens, and Shadowclan grows stronger every day.

And, Thunderclan needs new warriors. In the middle of this crisis come Rusty, an ordinary

housecat, who may just be the bravest warrior of them all.

"Fire and Ice”

In this series, the battle with Shadowclan is over, and Shadowclan is happy with their new

leader. But, bigger battles still lurk in the shadows. And a warrior named Graystripe has a secret

that could put ba le between Thunderclan and Riverclan into battle.

“Forest of Secrets”

Here we find that Graystripe refuses to stop his secret, and Thunderclan is s ll in danger.

Meanwhile, tensions rise and Thunderclan is in trouble when Windclan and Shadowclan join

forces and find out Thunderclans’ secret.

And that is it for the review of the Warriors books I read last year and this summer! I highly

recommend them for ages 9 and up. The books do contain violent scenes that some cat lovers

don’t like to read.

Jones on Summer ’18: Cruise & Swim Team!

This summer I had two amazing adventures…… a Disney cruise and a winning varsity swim team

at Mar ns Dam. First, I am going to talk about the Disney cruise, then I will share my story about

swim team.

Ok let’s get on to the first story, The Disney Cruise. First I need to tell you about the delicious

food. We went to a different restaurant every night. They had amazing food and it was free so

we can sneak out from the hotel room and go to the bakery and get whatever we want…..and

not tell our parents, but of course we never did that. There were also a bunch of activities on

the boat like games and plays. We played shuffle board, mini golf, and water sports, and we

saw a play called “Believe.” It was about a little girl and it was her birthday. Unfortunately, her

dad had more important things to do on her birthday. Also, her dad does not believe in magic,

but she loves magic. So, a genie that popped out of a bottle, took him on a journey till he

believed in magic. It was amazing!

I want to tell you a funny story about when I was golfing on the boat. I was behind this girl and

she got a hole in one. But on her next shot, the golf ball flew right off the boat into the water.

We were all laughing pretty hard.

And now, on to the swim team! I was on a very nice swim team at Martin’s Dam Swim Club. I

had a lot of nice friends on it. Most importantly, we haven’t lost a meet in 5 years and this year

I achieved something I’m very proud of……. I got on to the varsity team! My brother made it on

last year and bragged to my face. But this year, I was so excited because he couldn’t brag

anymore because I made the varsity team too! My friends were so excited for me, and I bet my

brother was but he just didn’t want to show it.
