INTRODUCTION Crafting a stellar paralegal resume takes time. It may take several tries. It’s such an important document it requires you to labor over the details…closely. After all, your resume introduces your professionalism. It’s a little bit like meeting your boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s parents for the first time. You want to make a good first impression, right? Otherwise you could develop problems later down the road. It’s not so different with your resume. Most importantly, you desire to get your resume to jump to the head of the line. Hundreds of resumes are reviewed daily by potential employers. This is true even for part time positions! When I was applying for part time work through advertisements on Craig’s List, I read updated postings from employers explaining the overwhelming response made them remove their ad! They only wanted to get back to qualified candidates. The current economy has upped the ante for great resumes. Potential employers can only select the best from the group. Keep in mind, since your resume will be filtered before making its way to the interviewer, its good practice to avoid personal information. Just the facts will do. Forget all attempts at humor. They’ll fail. Dazzle the interviewer with your wit and charm once you’re sitting in front of him or her. Not before then. Misusing or missing words won’t inspire confidence. Be diligent and proof read carefully. It’s worth getting a friend or family member to check out your resume. Another set of eyes and a different point of view can only help strengthen your curriculum vitae. Of course, avoid awkward phrasing. It looks bad. Your writing skills are on display. Even if you’re not required to submit a writing sample, put your best writing forward on your resume. An awkwardly phrased resume won’t gain you any favor. Proofreading and careful attention to detail are the cornerstones to successful resumes. It’s very possible in today’s competitive market you could eliminate your opportunities for consideration with small mistakes. Perhaps with a strong resume this may not be the case, but why chance it?

When putting your curriculum vitae together DO… • Be honest and accurate. • Use bullet points. It’s easier to scan your resume. • Begin sentences with action verbs and keep them short. • Limit professional jargon, acronyms and abbreviations. • Customize your resume for each prospective employer. • Describe significant contributions and how they impacted the bottom line. • Use a professional, easy-to-read typeface. • Proofread carefully! Use your computer's spell-check and ask others to read your resume. • Use proper tense if you’re employed. (e.g., Create privilege logs vs. created privilege logs.) • Use past tense for previous employment. • Be consistent. A very lengthy resume is a turn off. Managers are pressed for time. An overly long resume may get dropped during the filtering phase. Avoid this by being succinct. Utilize your cover letter to elaborate on professional achievements and bottom line improvements. Your cover letter should be designed to pull your reader through to your resume. Make them want to know more about you and how you can add value to their firm. Naturally, just as there are things you should do there are things you shouldn’t do. It’s best that you DON’T… • misrepresent your work experience or education. Honesty is best. • write overly long objectives. Keep it to a sentence. Be succinct. • use exact dates. Months and years are sufficient. • detail every aspect of your career. A resume that’s more than two pages is too much! • give reasons for termination or leaving a job. • include high school education if you're a college graduate. • list references or state, "References available on request." You’ll give these when asked. • provide salary information. Include salary ranges, if asked, in your cover letter. Wait until the interview to discuss this issue. Crafting a resume that gets you to the next step can be a little frustrating. You may have the experience the employer wants, but you’ve got to communicate it clearly and easily. It may take several tries to do this, but it’ll be worth it in the long run to get the job you want.
