The Forest Hills Jewish Center Yizkor Book

Rabbi Ben Zion Bokser, who led the Forest Hills Jewish Center with great distinction for fifty years, referred to memory as “the bridge that links the living and the dead.” To remember a loved one who has died is to consciously walk that bridge, and peer into a domain beyond our human experience. The challenge, always, is to be able to return to the world of the living. Within the pages of this book are inscribed the names of members of our congregation who are inscribed in our Book of Remembrance. Though the circumstances of their deaths were all different, each of them had family members who chose to memorialize him/her with a significant charitable gift to our synagogue. We of course remember lovingly every member of our synagogue who has passed away. Each death diminishes us, and we will always “walk that bridge” to keep their memories alive. But the names within our Book of Remembrance had family members whose memories of their loved ones moved them to sustain the synagogue that has been their home, and facilitated the perpetuation of their memories. We are deeply appreciative. This year, the special circumstances brought to bear by COVID-19 have made our recitation of Yizkor uniquely challenging. Our numbers in the Sanctuary are limited for maximum safety, and many members are sharing this act of memory with us virtually, on Zoom. In some very important ways, “virtual” participation in the recitation of Yizkor flies in the face of what Yizkor is all about. We are bid to remember as

Page 3: Table of Contents Message from Rabbi Skolnik Page 2-3 ... · 3 a community, together, hearing each other’s voices and seeing each other’s smiles and tears. But in this time of

3

a community, together, hearing each other’s voices and seeing each other’s smiles and tears. But in this time of pandemic, we are bid to redefine what exactly constitutes community, and how we achieve it. We have been doing exactly that since March, and likely will continue to do so until there is a vaccine to protect us all… Whether in the Rabbi Ben Zion Bokser Sanctuary or at home on a computer, let us resolve to preserve that special sense of community that our beloved Forest Hills Jewish Center has provided for us. We need it now more than ever! And may this new year bring us all forgiveness and the capacity to forgive… and good health!

A Special Prayer for Those Not Saying Yizkor for their Parents*

(The following prayer may be recited while others are saying

Yizkor by those who are blessed by having their parents still

living.)

Almighty God, while those who have lost their parents and their dear ones call to mind those who have gone to their eternal rest, I at this solemn moment raise my eyes unto You, the Giver of Life, and from a grateful heart thank You for Your mercies in having preserved the life of my beloved father and mother and all my other relatives. May it be Your will, Adonai my God and the God of my ancestors, to bless my parents with health and vigor, so that they may be with me for many years to come. Bless them even as they have blessed me, and guard them even as they have guarded me. In return for their affection and the sacrifices which they have made for me, may I bring them joy and lighten their cares. May it be my privilege to help them in every way that lies within my power; may I learn to understand and recognize the duty I owe unto them, that I may never have cause to reproach myself when it is too late. Shield my home from all sorrow. May peace and harmony and Your spirit ever reign within its walls. Keep me true to You and to all with whom I come in contact so that I may do Your will with a perfect heart, my Creator in Heaven. Amen. *adapted from a South African Mahzor

The Gift of Memory

Dear God, we thank you for the enduring blessing of memory, that enables us to bestow upon our loved ones the truest form of immortality. Though they are no longer here for us to hold, while we remember them, they are never completely lost to us. As does Your love for us, our love for them endures forever.

About the Cover…

In the autumn of 1949 The Forest Hills Jewish

Center dedicated its beautiful synagogue located

on Queens Blvd. When those assembled were

ushered into what is now known as the Rabbi Ben

Zion Bokser Sanctuary, they were struck by the

majesty of their new Aron Kodesh.

A creation of Arthur Szyk, great artist and inspired

Jew, the Aron is a dramatic artistic interpretation

of centuries of Jewish striving and achievement.

Among its many features, the Aron was designed

with symbolic representations of the Jewish

festivals arranged around the doors.

The photograph on the cover of this book is a

detail of the scales of justice, representing Yom

Kippur.

Minyan in the Time of Covid... Like many other areas of ritual life at our synagogue, the Daily Minyan - so long a foundational pillar of FHJC religious life - has been severely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. As of now, outside of Shabbat and Holiday morning services in the Rabbi Ben Zion Bokser Sanctuary, all other religious gatherings have been held online, save for efforts to maintain an in-person minyan in the Little Synagogue on Sunday mornings, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Even those three times have proven to be challenging. Those wishing to attend are asked to sign up in advance, with attendance limited to fifteen people. Reaching a minyan on those occasions has proven to be difficult. You are always welcome to join with us when we are gathering online- ZOOM information is available on our fhjc.org website. But we encourage you to help support our efforts to slowly, safely, but steadily make our way back to in-person prayer during the week. Your help will be greatly appreciated! You can register for minyan by contacting Laurie Worthman in the Center office at 718-263-7000, x203, or [email protected].
