Pennsylvania 6-8-6 S-2 Turbine SteamerBy the mid 1940's, the diesel revolution was beginning to take a foothold in America's railroad power

rosters. Realizing that diesel power was proving to be quite cost effective on other railroads, thePennsylvania Railroad experimented with ways to make steam power more competitive with the dieselrevolution. One bold new design deriving from the PRR’s efforts was the S-2 Steam Turbine. Whilethe S-2 still had a firebox and boiler and still generated steam, the pressure was run through a turbineinstead of reciprocating cylinders to make power. The turbine design provided smooth and constantpower to the drive wheels and at higher speeds, proved to be much more efficient than traditional steamlocomotives. Despite its high-speed efficiency, the S-2 still retained many of the high costs of operat-ing a steam engine. And, as we all know, the diesel eventually won out.

MTH is proud to add the RailKing Pennsylvania S-2 to the growing roster of RailKing PRR steamlocomotives. The die-cast boiler and tender provide substantial heft and durability to this historic loco-motive. Underneath the die-cast skin lie the S-2's metal chassis, metal drivers and rods, metal cou-plers, and a precision flywheel-equipped motor. In 1943, an urgent need for passenger locomotives led to therebuilding of the “K-5” class 2-8-2s into Wabash's first and only4-6-4s. The War Production Board had a ban on the building ofany new passenger locomotives; therefore, Wabash simplyrebuilt the hard-to-maintain old 2-8-2s, relieving maintenanceissues and keeping within the War Production Board's regula-tions. The need for fast smaller passenger engines in the middleof a war was seemingly unusual, but the new 4-6-4s allowed thelarger trains to be used for freight service and troop movements.

DoodlebugEven in the heyday of steam, it was still quite expensive

for steam trains to serve passengers on small branch linesand secondary mainlines. The solution to high-cost, low-rid-ership routes was the Doodlebug. Doodlebugs were essen-tially a cross between a locomotive and a passenger car.The front section housed an internal combustion engine andthe rear housed a passenger or freight compartment.Larger consists housed the baggage and freight in the rearcompartment and pulled a passenger car behind theDoodlebug, but most were run as single units. At their peakof popularity in the 1920's Doodlebugs rode the rails inevery part of the country.

Now, thanks to RailKing, Doodlebugs can ride on yourmainline. "Centipede." With 12 axles under the entire length of the body, thisengine was quite easy to identify. In addition to having all those wheels,Centipedes were also designed to have two separate diesel enginesinside. Railroads that ran the Centipedes included the Pennsylvania,National Railway of Mexico and the Seaboard Air Line. However, theircomplexity, unreliability and high maintenance costs - including the main-tenance of 96 brake shoes - hampered the success of the Centipedes.Although they never enjoyed widespread success, Centipedes still main-tain their special place in the history of diesel locomotives.

For the first time, O gauge railfans can now show off this distinctivediesel locomotive on their O-72 O Gauge layouts. In the early 1930's, the standard gauge tinplate pas-senger cars, known as the Blue Comet Series wereamong the best and most detailed mass-produced toytrains ever built. European manufacturers of the sametime frame were the only producers of comparable cars.

First produced in 1930, each car featured removableroofs, lighted interiors, multiple layered window treat-ments, rotating seats, lavatories, even working toilet lids!

RailKing Hellgate BridgeEarly Dutch sailors named the stretch of rip current between what is

now Wards Island and Queens, Long Island the "Gates of Hell" for thenumerous wrecks and high losses it tolled. Hundreds of years later, pas-sage across these waters posed perhaps the last large obstacle for thePennsylvania Railroad in its quest to surpass the New York Central as thenation's largest railway.

To achieve its goal, the Pennsylvania Railroad joined forces with theNew York-New Haven & Hartford Railroad to form the New YorkConnecting Railroad. The centerpiece of the new link to New Englandfrom the south and west was to be the now famous Hell Gate Bridge.

It took more than two decades of planning, $17 million, and a dozenyears of construction, but Chief Engineer Gustav Lindenthal's 1,017' longand 305' high main arch finally opened in 1917. A tribute to Lindenthal'sabilities, Hell Gate Bridge remained fully operational in 1994 without anysignificant maintenance. After many owners and in much need of repair,the Hell Gate Bridge finally received necessary upkeep and a fresh coatof paint to bring it to the high splendor of its original beauty.
