There are a ton of things that you can accomplish here at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and the KSA is here to support you every step of the way.We are funded by you, and we are here to serve and assist you throughout your University journey. We’ve just completed VISION 2018, our five-year strategic plan which outlines the university’s goals and objectives for the next 5 years. By the time you start in September 2014, we’ll also have completed our new academic plan which sets out our objectives for new courses, programs, services and supports. I am excited to be leading the Student Services team this year and look forward to meeting you in the hallway at one of our campuses, or at one of our many student life and leadership events. Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to me so I can learn a bit more about you and your aspirations.Over your first year of studies at KPU I would urge you to focus on the following goal:

Take responsibility for your own learning. We will do our utmost to provide you with exciting courses where you’ll learn new ideas and ways of thinking, but the responsibility for actually learning is yours. STUDENT TO STUDENT KEY TIPSIn a word, I would say EXPLORE! There are a bazillion ways to be involved on campus – find your thing! This is a great time to make amazing friends and engage in truly exciting experiences, grow, and change. Leave your comfort zone, test your limits, and find things you love to do. I did that by joining the orientation leadership team, student leadership conference, dragon boating – you get the picture. We are all – students, faculty and staff – in a community engaging the mind and the whole person. Get the most out of it!

checklist for new studentsEvery student goes through a period of transition when they first start post-secondary education. Some find the transition smooth and stress free, but many find that it takes a while to get the hang of it – new study methods and a new rhythm of university life. Below are some suggestions for how you can get started well. No matter how your journey begins at KPU, remember there are a lot of people who are ready and willing to help out:

• Login to your kwantlen.net account. Set your kwantlen.net email to auto forward if you aren’t going to login regularly. Test the auto forward. Use your Kwantlen.net email to send assignments to instructors; some will not accept others.

• Get your Smart Card from any campus library; bring a piece of photo ID to any campus library to obtain your card. Use your Smart Card as your KPU ID card, and to:

• Check out library books and other materials• Pay for printing and photocopying (load money

onto your card at any campus library)• Access your monthly Upass Card from any

campus bookstore • Get your UPass. Available through a dispenser in any

campus bookstore. You will need your Smart Card to obtain it.

• Buy your books. Find your personalized booklist through Online Self Service in the “Student Menu” tab on myKwantlen.

• Sort out your transportation to and from class. Get a parking pass if you need one. Purchase the pass through Impark (kpu.ca/parking). Consider the Campus Shuttle if you are going between KPU Surrey, KPU Langley, and/or KPU Tech (Cloverdale).

ACADEMIC SUCCESS • Plan to start your coursework right away – don’t get

behind; save yourself the pain later!• Create a semester schedule with assignment/exam

dates and a weekly schedule for study times. • Make changes to your courses or course load if

necessary early. Want help deciding on your course load? Talk to an Educational Advisor.

• Find out about procedures for withdrawing from courses later; investigate the consequences and know the deadlines!

• Consider registering for EDUC 1100 Intro to Higher Education or IDEA 1100 Interdisciplinary Foundations (or for your second semester).

• Make a point of meeting some classmates soon and exchanging contact info. If you have to miss class later, you’ll have someone to ask for notes.

• Visit the Learning Centre now so you can sign up for free tutoring and workshops easily later!

• Look into taking English or Math upgrading courses if they’re recommended for you.

• Find some places to study on campus, and make a good environment for studying at home as well.

MONEY • Create a budget. Being a student often puts the squeezeonyourfinances!Planaheadforhowbeingastudentwillaffectyoufinancially.

• Investigate student discounts through the Student Association.

• Look into the KPU Career Services job posting system soyoucanfindemploymentwhenyouneedit.

• Considering a student loan? Contact Student Awards and Financial Assistance for help with navigating your application.

• Ensure that you have paid all your fees. If you make changes to your course load, check the dates and deadlines page, kpu.ca/registration/dates, to see how that affects your fees.

• Look into your medical and dental coverage. The majority of KPU students that register in over 9 credits are also automatically opted into medical and dental coverage. Students can opt out if they already have coverage, but must do so within 30 days of the start of term. You can also add on a family member. For more details on coverage, how to opt out, or how to add a member, visit mystudentplan.ca/kwantlen.

FREQUENTLY ASKED PARKING QUESTIONSWhat is the difference between reserved and unreserved parking? All Student Daily Parking Passes and Weekly E-Permits are valid for non-reserved parking area only and Employee Annual reserved passes valid for the reserved areas. If I purchase a day pass is it valid on all campuses? Yes, you can use the same pass on all our campuses until it expires for that day.

If I purchase a day pass, leave and come back and am unable to get the same stall number, do I have to buy a different day pass? No, you do not need to purchase another pass as long as you place the day pass receipt face up on your dash. Don’t forget to ensure the pass is still valid.

If I have a Disabled Persons’ Parking (SPARC) permit, do I still have to purchase a parking permit? No,aslongasyourSPARCpermitisvalid,wedon’trequireyou to purchase a parking permit.

Where can I park if I have a SPARC permit? SPARCpassholderscanparkinthedisabledparkingstalls for free with their permits. They are expected to pay, however, if they’re not parked in a designated spot. In other words, it’s the designated stall that is free – not the pass, and the pass is not transferable to other parking stalls.

What happens if all the parking is full on the KPU Surrey? On the rare occasion that all parking spaces are full at the KPUSurrey,thereisfreeoverflowparkingavailableattheNewton Athletic Park on 128 Street one block north of 72 Avenue. Free Wi-Fi is available for registered students in all interior locations on all campuses. Although the “KwantlenWeb” network is available, we encourage you to use the “KPUSecureStudent” network for increased privacy when connected.

ONLINE OR PARTIALLY ONLINE COURSES Partially online courses are designed to replace some classroom time. Each course instructor will design the online component in a unique way, for instance an instructor might choose to replace one two-hour block in the week with online work, and another might choose to replace several weeks of the semester with online work.Fully online courses may still require in-person attendance for orientation or for exams. Instructors will aim to develop interactivity in the online environment. Students can do well in online courses, but those who have the most success are usually self-directed and motivated. Students can access their partially or fully online course anywhere there is a reliable Internet connection. Online courses are listed in the current timetable. After students have registered for a partially or fully online course they should log onto the myKwantlen student portal and click on the “My Courses” tab to access their course sites.

ONLINE TOOLS FOR ALL COURSES Many instructions choose to use online tools to support face-to-face classes. If an instructor has set up a website for a course, it will be available to students from their “My Courses” page in myKwantlen.

Moodle (Kwantlen Online Courses) Moodle is an open-source system for delivering fully and partially online courses. If you are accessing your Moodle course through myKwantlen, you will be logged in automatically. To log in directly to Moodle use the following websites:

WAITLISTING kpu.ca/registration/waitlisting If you are attempting to register in classes that are full, you have the option of placing yourself on a waitlist. As seats become available, you may be offered a spot according to your position on the waitlist. Many, but not all courses will be available for waitlisting. Students on waitlists are responsible for checking their mykwantlen email every day to see if they have been offered a seat. Otherwise they can miss their opportunity. You may place yourself on as many waitlists as you wish. There is no cost for waitlisting, and it does not count as registration. Waitlists do not carry forward to subsequent semesters.

ADDING, DROPPING OR WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE kpu.ca/registration/dates

Adding Classes can be added to your schedule at any time duringtheregistrationperiod,uptoandincludingthefirstweek of class.

Dropping Youcandropclassesuptotheendofthefirstweekofthe semester without receiving a “W” on your transcript. In general, to receive a full refund of domestic tuition and fees,youmustdropyourcourse(s)priortothefirstdayofthe semester. Domestic students dropping courses before the second week of the semester will receive a 70 percent tuition refund.

Withdrawing Withdrawing from class is the formal way of exiting a course. Withdrawn courses will have no effect on your GPA and will appear on your transcript with a “W”. Students can withdraw from classes until approximately mid-way through the semester. Check the website above for exact dates.

GPADefinitionsQuality Points: A value determined for each course by multiplying the course credit hours by the grade points for the assigned grade. Grade Point Average (GPA): The average of total quality points divided by the total semester credit hours. Term GPA (TGPA): The grade point average of all KPU courseworkcompletedinaspecificsemester.Cumulative GPA (CGPA): The grade point average of all coursework completed at KPU for which a letter grade was assigned. For repeated courses, only the higher grade is used in this calculation. Program GPA (PGPA): The GPA for all coursework applicabletoaspecificprogram.Thisisusedwhendetermining eligibility for graduation and whether a student has graduated “With Distinction.”

What is a “GPA”? GPA refers to grade point average. Each letter grade is assigned a point value which is called the grade point. The GPA is the average of the grade points of the courses you have taken and it is a function of the number of credits each course carries.

For example, to calculate the GPA of a 3-credit course with an A and a 5-credit course with a C+, you would do the following calculation:

You then divide the total Quality Points by the total number of credits: (23.65 Quality Points)/(8 Credits) = 2.96 GPA

Your transcript will show two different grade point averages. The term GPA is the point average of your grades over one semester. The cumulative GPA is the point average of your grades over all the academic courses you may ever have taken at KPU.

KPU EMERGENCY BURSARIES AND LOANS Emergency LoansEmergency Loans are available for students who are experiencing an unexpected delay with their student loans. ADULT BASIC EDUCATION STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (ABESAP) This program is available to assist students who are upgrading their education in preparation for post-secondary level studies. Eligibility is determined on the basisofassessedfinancialneed.Eligiblestudentsmustbe Canadian citizens or Landed Immigrants studying either full- or part-time in one of the following areas: Academic and Career Prep Qualifying Studies, English Language Studies (ELST), and the Access Program for People with Disabilities (APPD).

Fielding eight varsity teams including men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, badminton and golf, the Eagles are thrilling to watch as they strive for more PACWEST provincial and CCAA national titles.In 2010, the women’s soccer team repeated their provincial gold medal and collected a CCAA National bronze medal, while the badminton team won national gold in mixed doubles, a Kwantlen first! Since then, the Eagles badminton team has continued to excel at the national level collecting a bronze medal, in 2012, a silver medal, in 2013 and bronze medal, in 2014. As a part of Campus Life, athletics events are a great venue to meet people, show your school spirit, win some prizes and be involved. All home games are free for KPU students! Get paid to work on campus as a student-assistant or become a part of the Eagles game-day event staff! Game-day event staff is paid to help run the soccer and basketball games including everything from scorekeeping to event hosting. KPU’s Academic and Career Preparation Department (ACP) provides academic pathways to success for new and continuing students. Students can meet English, math, and science thresholds by taking ACP’s Qualifying Studies courses. • ACP’s small class sizes enhance the student learning

experience. • ACP’s personalized assessments assist students with

TRANSITION COURSESkpu.ca/arts/edstThe Department of Educational Studies offers a transition course EDUC 1100 CR-3 Introduction to Higher Education.Students will develop an understanding of the purpose of post-secondary education and how it can enhance the quality of their lives and their communities. They will explore their place in the university through examining the history and functions of education (e.g., the exclusion of certain groups, the relation of education to living in a democratic society). Students will also begin to develop abilities necessary to maximize their education, including the ability to participate in scholarly discourse, recognize connections between disciplines, and understand the world and act within it in new and creative ways through discussions, group work, special events, and service learning projects. If you are an athlete, aboriginal student, or international student you may prefer to take one of our Introduction to Higher Education courses that were designed specifically for you!

• ACE IT Transition Conferences provide high school students with an excellent start to their trade or technology courses. There are four conferences held in January each year. Check the website for the KPU Tech (Cloverdale) campus.

EXAM JAM Exam Jam is a unique event on the KPU Langley and KPU Richmonddesignedtohelpstudentspreparefortheirexams. This event incorporates a mix of programs that provides students the opportunity to engage in reviews of their course material as well as attend health-minded study breaks and activity sessions.

EARLY ALERT PROGRAM kpu.ca/earlyalert The Early Alert program is an online service that enables instructors to identify students who may be struggling in a course. The system provides students with an opportunity for additional help early in the semester so that small problems don’t turn into bigger ones. Not all instructors use the Early Alert system, but those who do will often talk about the program at the start of the semester and will usually speak with a student directly before referring them to Early Alert. Students are then contacted by a student services representative, usually an educational advisor, for further discussion and potential referrals for additional help from departments such as the Learning Centre, Financial Awards and Counselling Services. Our students matter and the Early Alert program is one more way KPU cares.

KPU COUNSELLING DEPARTMENT SERVICES Sometimespersonalissuesordifficultieswithcareergoals can get in the way of successful student progress. Counselling services are available to all registered students at no cost to the student. Some of the services available to student are the following:

PERSONAL COUNSELLING SERVICES• Counsellors help students with a wide range of personal

issues that affect their academic performance and/or general well-being. Some examples of common concerns are:

In addition, counsellors assist students in crisis and make referrals for specialized help.

The Counselling Department’s free Career Planning seminar assists anyone who is not sure where to start when choosing a career direction or changing career paths. This seminar provides you with basic information about key aspects of career decision-making and with resources to get you started on researching and planning your future.

CAREER EXPLORATION SEMINAR SERIESCareer Explorations seminars help you to gain more information about yourself and suitable occupations. In this seminar, through standardized career assessments and other activities, you will explore your interests, personality traits, values and skills as they relate to career choice. Get valuable information about occupations and employment trends that will help you to plan your career objectives. Please note: there is a fee for this seminar to cover the cost of testing.

CAREER & LIFE CLARIFICATION GAMEFun and interactive new initiative to assist students with career clarification. In a three hour group format students will begin to clarify their desires, assets, skills, temperament and other integral factors related to career decision making. Cost is only $5.
