Historical Significance of the Yury Stefanyk Collection

The collection provides valuable historical information on the third wave (post World War II) ofUkrainian immigration to Canada. In particular there is a substantial amount of information onthe literary politics of the Ukrainian Canadian community. Wasyl STefanyk, Yury's father, isrespected by both Ukrainian nationalists and Ukrainian communists. The state archives in LwowUkrainian SSR are named in honor of Wasyl Stefanyk.

Because of his father's literary reputation Yury was one of the few Ukrainians in Canada whomaintained contacts with individuals in the Ukrainian community at opposite ends of the politicalspectrum. He also maintained contact with family members in Ukraine. This is the onlyUkrainian archival collection at the PAC that contains substantial correspondence from the SovietUnion. Since Yury Stefanyk fled as a refugee, the material in this collection is almost entirelyfrom the post-World War II period.

The collection contains records of the Ukrainian Writers Association 'Slovo', draft manuscriptsand articles and correspondence with Ukrainian writers from many countries including EastEuropean countries. This material will be of particular interest to researchers in the fields ofCanadian ethnocultural literature, history and politics.
