INTRODUCTION 2007 was a big year for me. I got married and had a fairy tale wedding. Then two short months later I injured my back. I had 3 years of surgeries, doctor appointments, physical therapy, and bed rest. I opted for a spinal fusion hoping that would solve everything. Before my bed rest was over from that surgery, my surgeon was discussing my next surgical options with me.
Wait. What?!?! I opted for a fusion as a last resort and as my final fix-all solution. So when the doctor came back with a laundry list of more things he wanted to “try”, I felt defeated, deceived, and tired.
That’s when I realized what I was doing wasn’t working. So I started researching natural remedies. I learned that I needed to start by getting rid of the toxins in my life. I started with my food. I volunteered at a local vegetable farm in exchange for a weekly share of organic vegetables. I bought raw milk and clean meat. My pantry got a makeover.
And it didn’t stop there. The more I learned about the toxins around us, the more I wanted them out of my life. I threw away all my toxic cleaners and bleach wipes. I learned how to make effective and safe cleaning solutions that worked.
And then came all the products in my bathroom. I learned that I can easily make homemade products to replace almost everything in my bathroom. I started using therapeutic grade essential oils.
Since this makeover, I am healthier and stronger than the doctors said was possible. Instead of years of surgeries, I needed to start by detoxing my life.
Here is a collection of my favorite beauty and personal care products. Enjoy!

SUGAR BODY SCRUB Ingredients
1 cup organic cane sugar ¼ cup oil of choice (I use olive oil or coconut oil – see note below) 2 tablespoons raw honey
20 drops of essential oils
Instructions
Combine all ingredients Store in a glass container Use as a full body scrub to exfoliate
For more DIY tips and recipes, check out my eBook The No Poo Method.
Notes
Coconut oil is my favorite oil to use topically for skin. However, coconut oil can sometimes separate and float to the top of the container. In cold temperatures, it might solidify at the top of jar. A quick stir with your fingers will fix that. If you prefer, you can use olive, avocado, or almond oil. If you use coconut oil, if it is solid when you mix the ingredients, melt it before adding it to the other ingredients.
To get added immune boosting benefits, use therapeutic grade essential. You can use any essential oils you like. My favorites for this recipe are lavender, Stress Away, or Gentle Baby.
DRY SHAMPOO Ingredients
½ cup Arrowroot Up to ¼ cup tint (cocoa powder for dark hair; red clay for red hair; omit for light hair) 10 drops essential oils drops (optional; see note below)

Combine all ingredients Store in a shaker jar or container Apply sparingly to your scalp as needed in between washes. You can use a shaker jar or

BODY BUTTER Ingredients
½ cup Shea Butter ¼ cup Coconut Oil ¼ cup Jojoba Oil 1 tbsp. Vitamin E Liquid

Remove from heat. Add the jojoba oil, vitamin E liquid, and essential oils. Refrigerate for about an hour until chilled. You will have an off-white, almost solid (not
completely solid). Mix with a hand mixer for about 10 minutes until you have soft white peaks (like whip cream). Store in a glass container at room temperature for up to 6 months. Apply as you would lotion.

Notes
Therapeutic grade essential oils may support circulation and healthy skin. You can use any oils you prefer (note citrus oils are photo-sensitive, so don’t use citrus oils if you plan on being in the sun).

Ingredients
1 tbsp. Gelatin (the red container) 1.5 tbsp. Dairy (milk, yogurt, or kefir)
For more DIY tips and recipes, check out my eBook The No Poo Method.
Instructions
Mix ingredients in a pot. Heat on low heat for a few minutes until the gelatin has dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool if needed. But not cool enough to gel the gelatin, just cool

forehead, chin, and nose. Use a plastic spoon to spread. Let sit for 10-15 minutes. Peel off the strips.

If you use yogurt or kefir, your mix might end up too thick. Add milk to get desired consistency.
