THOMAS O’BRIEN

Thomas O’Brien is an interior and home furnishings designer

based in New York City. He is the founder and president of Aero

Studios, one of America’s leading design firms, and the proprietor of

Aero Ltd., the Soho home boutique that is the retail extension

of the studio.

Since opening Aero’s doors in 1992, O’Brien has been celebrated

for his ability to translate modern design into a warm and livable

style. His work is best known for its blend of vintage modern elegance

and easy domesticity, along with new interpretations of American

classical forms.

Through Aero Studios, O’Brien has designed numerous lofts

and formal apartments, traditional estates and modern architectural

homes across the country. Among new residential projects,

he has created the vintage-modern interiors for the historic ten-building complex of The Greenwich Lane, a

LEED-certified, luxury real estate development in New York’s Greenwich Village. His most interdisciplinary

venture is the recent ground-up construction of a 19th century-style library, garden, and studio next to his

Academy house on Long Island: a locus for creative work outside of the city, which has inspired new directions in

product design for furniture, lighting, and textiles, as well as both architectural and landscape features for

other client homes.

O’Brien is regarded as an innovator in the design industry for his unusual, long-lived combination of exclusive

interior design services, a home store, and the creation of a successful portfolio of high-end classic home products.

Over the past sixteen years, in partnership with a range of heritage companies, he has produced lighting, furniture,

table and giftware, textiles, carpets, and plumbing that extend his brand to customers around the world. Other

product categories are being investigated all the time; and, as a starting point for his newest ideas, O’Brien continues

to create limited luxury editions of handmade lighting, accessories and furniture for his Aero store in New York.

Entering its third decade, Aero remains O’Brien’s most constant laboratory for the collected world that gives a home

life as well as style—a philosophy that informs everything he designs.

Thomas O’Brien received his BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City. He is regularly named to top

editorial designer lists such as the AD-100, and his work has been featured in a variety of leading publications,

including Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, The New York Times, Time, Town & Country,

and Veranda, among others. He is the author of two design books: the best-selling AMERICAN MODERN,

and the recently published AERO: BEGINNING TO NOW, and he is currently working on a third lifestyle book.

He lives in Manhattan and in Bellport, New York.
