    Township to receive

full county parks grantBy NICK COHENThe Tabernacle Sun

Tabernacle is one of only threetowns throughout BurlingtonCounty that will receive the full$250,000 parks grant, county offi-cials said.

The award is the fourth cycle offunding by the county Municipal

Park Development AssistanceProgram. Freeholders use $5 mil-lion annually from the open spacefund, parks and farmland and his-toric preservation trust fund tosupport local parks, recreationprojects and construction work inthe municipalities.

All the towns within Burling-ton County are eligible for up to$250,000 each year, but Taberna-cle, along with Mt. Holly and De-

lanco, are the only three townsthat are receiving the maximumamount. Other grants range from$50,000 to $248,500. The county re-ceived applications totaling morethan $8 million.

Township administrator DougCramer said that the moneywould be used to complete the on-going work at Patty Bowker Park,

adding a concession stand as wellas handicap accessible paths andbleachers.

In other news:Mayor Stephen Lee presented a

proclamation honoring the familyof Anthony and Mildred Russo Jr.at the Township Committee meet-ing. Members of the Russo familywere in attendance to receiveplaques of the proclamation thatwas a tribute to their parents but

also the efforts of each generationof the family to continue theRusso legacy in Tabernacle.

The once 86-acre farm is nowmore than 500 acres but still fami-ly run by Anthony and Mildredschildren, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. The Russo familyestablished their farm in Taber-nacle in 1940, growing fresh fruits

and vegetables and later openinga farm market selling their pro-duce. The farm remains at the cor-ner of Carranza and MedfordLakes roads.

The farm stand sells fruit andvegetables grown on the familyfarm, as well as other local hall-marks, including wine fromValenzano Winery in Shamong.

    New Jersey residents are rich.

    Really rich. Were the second-

richest state in the nation, be-

hind only those people two states to

    the south in Maryland.

    The median household income for

New Jersey residents is $69,667. Thats

    pretty good news.

The bad news: That number is

boosted in large part by the states

    ridiculously wealthy families. More

than 11 percent of families here have

an income of more than $200,000 per

    year.

On the surface, the Garden States

ranking of No. 2 on the list of wealthi-

est states, compiled by 24/7 Wall St., isa positive sign to our economys health

    and future prospects. Dig deeper,

though, and youll see a much differ-

    ent story.

    New Jerseys unemployment rate

was 9.5 percent in 2012, one of the

worst in the country. The national av-

erage was 8.1 percent. The state above

us on the rich list, Maryland, had a

low unemployment rate of 6.8 percent,

for example. Even worse, the number

of people on food stamps increased

from 8 percent in 2011 to 9.3 percent in

    2012.

    That is not good news.

Still, our outlook is getting better. Asof August, New Jerseys unemploy-

ment rate was 8.5 percent, according

to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Thats the lowest mark since March

2009, when it was 8.3 percent. It also

closed the gap between the national

unemployment rate, which sat at 7.3

    percent in August.

But New Jersey needs to help busi-

nesses create more jobs. While the

state gained 60,300 jobs in the past 12

months, it lost 1,500 in August. From

July to August, more than 12,000 work-

ers stopped looking for work and left

    the workforce.

    Thats not good, either.

    Gov. Christie recently revamped the

states business tax breaks in an effort

to add more jobs, but how effective

that will be might take time to tell. Its

a good first step, as any incentive to

add more jobs is a positive step, as

long as the state isnt digging a deeperdebt hole.

The bottom line is our workers need

more jobs because the fact is that,

while a small percentage of New Jer-

sey families are rich, most are still

    struggling.

I was always told growing up, most oftenby my grandmother, "breakfast is the mostimportant meal of the day, so eat yourbreakfast. If you grew up listening tosimilar words of wisdom from the older, wiser adults in your life, you won't be sur-prised to learn schools across the countryhave found making breakfast part of theirdaily schedules improves student learning.

That is why the Tabernacle Board of Edu-cation is making breakfast available for allstudents at the middle school for the 2013-2014 school year as part of a special pilotprogram. If the program proves success-ful, all students in grades kindergarten

through eight will find breakfast availableto them each morning starting in the 2014-2015 school year.

Educators now realize more than ever, eating a healthy breakfast each day can en-hance student learning and boost aschool's climate in a positive manner. Theresearch linking children's nutrition to ac-ademic learning is numerous. One onlyhas to refer to the Food Research and Ac-tion Center's "Breakfast for Learning" factsheet posted on our district website to

learn the evidence shows: 1.) skippingbreakfast and experiencing hunger im-pairs children's ability to learn; 2.) eatingbreakfast helps improve children's aca-demic performance; 3.) breakfast improveschildren's behavior and learning environ-

ments, and 4.) eating a healthy breakfastmay protect against childhood obesity.

Olson Middle School Principal SusanGrosser thinks piloting the breakfast pro-gram with the older students is a good wayto spread the word. I have adjusted ourarrival procedures and reassigned staffduties to help students who choose to eatbreakfast each morning, she said.

Maria Baran, food services managerwith Nutriserve, oversees the cafeteriaservices for the Tabernacle School District.

Baran attended the middle school's Back toSchool Night and set up a display of someof the menu options available to studentsfor breakfast each day. The most popular

    BOE hopes breakfastprogram will expand

breakfast choice so far amongmiddle school students is whenBaran sets up the yogurt parfaitbar. Students make their waythrough the food line and get toselect various toppings to placeon top of their yogurt. The high-est number of breakfasts servedthis year on any given day was

just more than 30. We hope thatnumber reaches at least threetimes that amount by the middleof the school year. Baran is notic-ing morning breakfast is becom-ing a wonderful way for studentsto socialize with their peers andteachers.

I see more and more studentseating breakfast each day so theycan be with their friends. Westarted out with one student eat-ing breakfast the first day ofschool to over 30 students a day

now, Baran said.As a superintendent of schools,

there are many things I must

    oversee, but the new morning

breakfast program at Olson hasbeen a pleasure to see take off.Sitting down with students andgetting their feedback has been anice way to start my day as well.Students are now starting to tellme they like the idea of getting toschool to have breakfast withtheir friends.

Everyone is optimistic thatschool breakfast will become aregular part of our studentsschool day in Tabernacle. Laura

Clapps, vice president of theBoard of Education and chairper-son of the boards operationscommittee, has discussed theschool breakfast option with herfellow board members StephenPrice and Julie Stewart as part oftheir monthly meetings. Theboard committee felt strongly itwas a worthwhile effort to sup-port in order to ensure studentsstarted their day successfully. Now the board of education willhope to see the program expand,

if successful, and look for mea-sureable success in our studentsachievement as well.

tempts to schedule practices andevents to allow students to be apart of other clubs.

We practice two days a weekin the evening, and then againFridays before football games andagain Saturdays before competi-tions, Styers said. A lot of our

students have jobs or want to par-ticipate in other clubs so Ive al-ways tried to make our scheduleflexible to that.

Styers credits the band reach-ing its highest level of membersat 94 to two things.

We have tremendous supportfrom our administration. Princi-pal Spektor and Bradley Bauer, the assistant principal, are verysupportive of our program andour goals for the program. Wealso have a great parent associa-tion that supports our events,Styers said. In addition to that,we have very little attrition,

rarely does the program lose kidsyear to year.Using Rocky Balboa as last

years theme left the Golden Ea-

gles with a tough act to follow.Styers chose My First Trip to theMagic Kingdom. Fitting asSeneca performed on Main Streetin Disney World earlier this year.
