• T5 facility at GALCIT is a free piston shock tunnel• Uniqueness of the facility is the ability to study

the chemical and thermodynamic non-equilibrium effects relevant in high speed flight

• Capable of producing flows of up to specific reservoir enthalpy of 25 MJ/kg, pressure of 100 MPa, and temperature 10000 K

• Recent work for NASA includes heat transfer data on the CEV and MSL forebodies

Flow Visualization From T5

Shock wave interaction in hypervelocity flow. Air flow is left to right. Image is a holographic shadowgraph. Thesis work by S. R. Sanderson.

Transition on a 5 degree half angle cone in hypervelocity flow. Nitrogen flow is right to left. Image is a near-resonantly enhanced shadowgraph. Thesis work P. Germain.

Hypervelocity flow over a sphere. CO2 flow is left to right. Image is a finite fringe differential interferogram. Thesis work by C. Y. Wen.
