1990 January saw the European Launch of the T4. August 1990 saw the UK market launch.

1993 T4 assembly starts in Poland, Taiwan and Indonesia from CKD kits (Completely Knocked Down).

1994 500,000th T4

1996 Major model revamp in 1996, which saw changes such as rear disc brakes, one piece rear bumper and the addition of a 2.5 litre TDi engine. The Caravelle VR6 was introduced necessitating a new longer nose to accommodate the new engine. The longer nose was used on the Caravelles thereafter, and the short nose T4 was used for the lesser models.

1998 Euro 2 Compliant TDI engine, and Syncro TDI launched. 100,000th T4 produced.

2000 50th Anniversary of the Transporter. Special Edition T4 produced.

2002 Optional X-pack long nose T4 becomes available in the UK.

2003 Production of Final Edition T4 Multivan and Westfalia Generation starts in March 2003. Production of the T4 ends on July 31st 2003.

A brief history of the VW T4August 1990

Production of the new fourth generation of the Volkswagen Transporter, the T4 model commenced after the annual VW holiday. This was a completely new model which incorporated modern ideas, many taken from the Golf and Passat range. It was a complete departure from the previous Transporters as it was front engined, front wheel drive and had a monocoque construction. Volkswagen had been working on the idea of moving to a front engined format since the late Seventies. The predecessor to the T4, the T3 or T25 as it was known in the U.K. was the first Transporter to be offered with water-cooled petrol or diesel engines, but these were rear mounted.

As with Transporters from 1956 onwards, the new T4 was built at the dedicated Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle factory in Hanover, Germany. Although, as with most models, production was not solely limited to Hanover as vehicles were also assembled in Poland, Indonesia and Taiwan from 1993.

The T4 was available in SWB (short wheel base) or LWB (long wheel base). The range (excluding custom built models) consists of:

• Panel Van (no side windows)

• Eurovan (2 side windows, sliding door and opposite)

• Kombi (windows but no rear seating)

• Caravelle (5,7,8,9 seat options)

• Single Cab Pickup

• Double Cab Pickup

• Syncro (4x4 available on all models)

DIY Interior Panel Conversion

A quick and easy way to convert your T4 short wheelbase, panel van into a luxurious bus. Panels are made from lightweight, easy-clean, high impact ABS material. They are fitted to line the van’s interior using the easily remova-ble fixings supplied – allowing for later repair or modifica-tion of your vehicle.

This JK-exclusive kit is available for both twin rear door or tailgate models but fits only righthand drive models with nearside sliding door and without rear side windows. It is also designed for use with standard VW windows J17092 and J17903 which we also supply.

This clever little item allows you to leave your tailgate ajar for ventilation without risking the security of your T4. Perfect if you’re sleeping in your van but find it stuffy - or want to leave your dog in the back (taking care that it’s never too hot). Made from solid metal, it allows the tailgate to be left open by approximately 100mm, but still locked. It can only be removed by unlocking the tailgate. Requires no tools to fit and works with central locking.

If you kit your VW out with Dynamat products such as Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner from JK, you’ll not only find the noise levels are greatly reduced but you’ll also find the level of heat in your vehicle is reduced.

DynaDeck is vinyl flooring, which has a very similar appearance to carpet, but is hardwearing and water resistant, and can be removed to be cleaned. The 1/8 of an inch vinyl top layer has a ¼ inch noise and heat suppressing Dynaliner layer underneath it. This makes for a flooring which is not only easy to cut to shape – but it will drastically cut down road noise.

Dynamat - The Hoodliner

Dynaliner is the perfect ultra light weight insulator to use on top of Dynamat. This durable crush and tear resistant material has the highest heat blocking properties available in a single layer synthetic foam-type material. It isn’t affected by oil and does not absorb water. It provides acoustic isolation and excellent thermal insulation for roof, bulkhead/firewall, floor, quarter panels, doors and even as under the bonnet on a T5.

Hoodliner is a polyether, urethane-based, thermo-acoustic foam with a reinforced aluminiumsed facing and a pressure-sensitive adhesive on the application side. Hoodliner is designed to be die cut to shape and then applied in a vehicle’s engine compartment to the underside of the bonnet. The adhesive side is smooth, ensuring complete contact with the underlying surface without any air pockets of channels.

This ultra-durable cab and load area carpet replacement is made of high grade 3/8” waterproof liner, utilising a 1lb/sq.ft. vinyl barrier over a 1/4” high efficiency thermoacoustic foam. Has a durable deep twist embossed vinyl grain top facing.

Dynamat Xtreme is a patented, lightweight elastomeric butyl and aluminum constrained-layer vibrational damper. It can be die cut to shape and placed onto thew body surface, directly on painted panels or after the sheet metal is cleaned before painting. Material is optimized for temperature ranges, can withstand temperature extremes and is highly resistant to aging.

Designed to fit Volkswagen T4s with out pop tops or roof rails this powder coated steel awning rail is simply fitted by bonding to the roof of your van. To fix you will require bonding agent J18126. You will also require three lengths of figure of 8 rail J12016 when fitting your awning.

A convenient top valance shade to slide into the roller guide of the lead bar. The shade can be left installed when the awning is closed.

This optional 12v motor kit which can be added to your existing F45s (Titanium) awning. This kit also allows manual opening and closing.

If you are planning on fitting a Fiamma F35 Pro awning to your VW T4 Lift Roof Transporter you will need this mounting kit. Drilling is necessary to fit the brackets. Kit contains two 8cm brackets and the fixings required.

This easy-to-fit towbar fits all VW T4 models 1991-2003. Specially engineered for T4 and is compatible with the maximum towing weight of your vehicle.

Westfalia fixed Swan Neck Towbar for VW T4 1 996-2003 is one piece on the towbar.
