Preliminary Research

Where did your idea come from?

When I was in high school, I had to focus on the literary aspects of film for a class, so that aided in setting the groundwork for this project. Basically we just took examples from numerous horror movies, and added some emotional drama. Also by adding the fact that it’s a high school reunion it hits closer to home for a younger audience. I never had the chance to further expand my idea, but this project allows me to do so. It is somewhat difficult to create a horror movie however. We realized during the planning process that you have to be very careful with the placement of characters. In order for a horror movie to make sense, every single character has to be in the right place at the right time.

Outside contributing references.

Basically contributing references were other horror movies. There is always every stereotypical character. So the activist, the businessman, the housewife, the momma’s boy are just typical characters, but we figured it would be fun to adjust their dialogue for this movie. As for locations, it is really convenient that the scenes take place in a house, as well as a coffee shop, which are all very reasonable locations. When thinking of similar movies, any classic teen slasher film fits the mold. However, we feel the twist at the end, and the complexities of numerous characters set it apart.

Personal interests and anecdotes.

Our group chose to do a horror movie because we are all familiar with the plot lines and how things go, and we thought it would be fun to make altercations. Also, we are all fans of similar type movies, so our interests also aided us in our decision. Since this is only a 20-page script, we figured we had to go horror or comedy. By choosing a horror movie, we could have more of a creative process, rather than focusing on jokes that would make our audience laugh.

What angle did you approach the story from?

Our angle was to focus on the killer’s perspective. Instead of always having the innocent victims running around for their lives and making the audience feel bad for them, we make the audience feel bad for the protagonist who also ends up being the mastermind behind everything.

Treatment

We see the troubled marriage between Brian and Beth. Brian verbally abuses his wife, but there wasn’t anything she could do. She just dealt with the pain and pretended she was still living the perfect marriage. Brian leaves for work, and Beth meets up with an old high school friend, Katie. While Beth and Katie are talking at Starbucks, Beth receives a phone call that her husband was murdered.

With the news of her husband’s death, Beth looks for comfort from her old high school friends. Her and Katie make numerous calls and finally a little reunion is formed. Kevin, Brandt, Carina, Hannah, Amy, and Megan all come back to the city to support Beth in her time of need. The group is catching up and letting everyone know how their lives have been. Kevin is a successful businessman, Brandt is still living at home with his mom, Carina moved back to Germany, Hannah is an environmental activist, Amy is a housewife, and Megan is an investigative journalist. After all of this, the attention was focused on Beth and the death of her husband. Beth lets them know that Brian was stabbed to death, and everyone is in utter shock. Things also get ugly when it is revealed that Katie and Brian used to be couple. At this point, things got a little awkward and people went their separate ways in the house.

Kevin takes a business call, Beth takes a shower, Carina goes out for some cigarettes, Megan, Brandt, and Katie take a walk, and Amy and Hannah go upstairs.

Soon after this people begin to disappear one after the other. Megan, Brandt, and Katie find Carina dead in her car, and everyone begins to unravel mentally. Amy gets killed and thrown in a closet, and Brandt gets bludgeoned with a bat. There is a killer lose in the house, and everyone is blaming each other. Kevin returns from his business call and eats a cookie in the kitchen. Then, Beth comes out of the shower, while Katie and Megan are terrified.

The next scene we see Kevin suffocate Hannah while she’s sleeping. The supposed killer is identified and causes everyone to question why Kevin would kill all of these people. Downstairs a fight ensues between Beth and Megan, and Megan ends up drowning in the pool. Katie comes to her defense, and the two begin screaming at each other over Katie’s affair with Beth’s husband. Eventually, Beth gets the upper hand and chokes Katie to death.

Beth then runs upstairs to find Kevin. We find out that Kevin and Beth planned this whole thing. Kevin has always been in love with Beth, and she controlled him like a puppet. He would do anything for her, even murder. We then find out that Beth was the mastermind behind everything. Her marriage was like a prison and none of her friends came to help her, so she was out to prove she would never need them for anything again.

Kevin starts to feel a little nauseous, and it is revealed that Beth poisoned the cookies he ate. She gives him a kiss goodbye, and leaves.

It’s nearly sunrise and Beth is seen leaving her house, leaving behind all of the bodies of her former high school friends.

1 INT. BRIAN AND BETH’S KITCHEN- DAY 1

BETH makes plans to meet an old friend, KATIE, for coffee. She also prepares breakfast for her husband, BRIAN. Beth asks for permission to leave the house, and Brian gets annoyed and minor tension builds. Brian leaves for work, and Beth gets ready for her coffee date.

(One-sided phone call)

BETH Yeah the little coffee shop around the corner. Okay. Okay, I’ll see you there. (Beth takes anonymous pills, and Brian enters the kitchen.)

BETH Good morning honey. BRIAN Do you always look that bad?

(Beth shrugs off the comment, as if it never happened.) BETH Tonight I have plans to have coffee with Katie. You remember her from high school? She and I were really good friends and I haven’t seen her in a really long time. So I was wondering if it would be okay with you if I went. BRIAN I’m sorry I don’t want you to leave the house. BETH Well I haven’t seen her in so long and its just coffee for a half-hour. Please, I haven’t been out of the house for weeks. BRIAN You’re talking to me like I actually care, or as if what you have to say actually matters. BETH Please let me do this. I’ll have dinner

ready for you and everything…your favorite. BRIAN Fine I don’t care. Do whatever the hell you want. (Brian knocks the cereal bowl over on purpose.) Oops…can you clean that up, I have to get to work. Thanks. BETH Have a nice day. BRIAN I will as soon as you clean that up. Bye.

2 INT. BRIAN AND BETH’S ENTRYWAY- NIGHT 2

BRIAN gets back from work. He sets the mail down, and when he turns around a MASKED PERSON in all black stabs him in the stomach repeatedly. His lifeless body is taken away from the scene.

3 EXT. COFFEE SHOP PATIO- NIGHT 3

BETH and KATIE are catching up at a local coffee shop. Everything is going well, until Beth receives a phone call regarding the death of her husband. Beth is in shock and hysterically crying. Katie is flustered as well and asks Beth if there is anything she can do. Beth asks Katie to organize a reunion of their old high school group. Beth leaves the coffee shop in tears.

KATIE So this guy sitting next to me asked the same question three times, and the professor got so frustrated he left. He literally walked out of the classroom. There’s like 280 students and he was just like…forget this. BETH Oh I miss school so much. KATIE Are you kidding me? I’ll be so glad when I

graduate. Homework, tests, and always being stressed out. You’re not missing out. BETH Oh I miss you Katie. We used to have so much fun together. KATIE Yeah I know. It was good. High school was fun. (Beth’s phone rings, and a one-sided phone call ensues.) BETH Hold on for one sec. Hello. Yes this is she. Who’s this? Yes of course I know him he’s my husband. What’s going on? You what? That’s not possible! No, that’s not possible! What are you talking about? What do you mean calm down? My husband is dead! You just told me my husband was dead and you’re telling me to calm down! (Beth is crying hysterically at this point, and is visibly upset.) KATIE What happened? What’s wrong? BETH (The crying continues as she attempts to explain things to Katie.) Brian. It’s Brian KATIE What do you mean its Brian? BETH He’s dead. My husband is dead. KATIE Oh my God. I’m so sorry. What do you want me to do? What should I do? BETH I don’t know. I need people. Call Everyone.

Call the old crowd. KATIE I’ll get on it. It’s fine. You’re going to be okay. Everything’s going to be okay. BETH I need to go home. I’m sorry I have to go. (Beth grabs her car keys and leaves.)

4 EXT. AMY’S BACKYARD- DAY 4

AMY is in her backward and receives a phone call from KATIE. Katie informs Amy of BRIAN’S death, and let’s her know about tomorrow’s reunion to help BETH get through this tough time. (Amy is relaxing by the pool when her phone rings. A one-sided phone call ensues.) AMY Hello. Yeah this is Amy. Oh my gosh, Katie from high school? Hey, how’s it going? Is everything okay? Yah Brian Smith. Oh my gosh, he was murdered? Is Beth okay? At six tomorrow night? Okay I’ll be there.

5 INT. BRANDT’S MOM’S KITCHEN- DAY 5

BRANDT’S MOM is getting cereal for her son, BRANDT. They then receive KATIE’S phone call regarding BRIAN’S death.

BRANDT’S MOM How’s that cereal Brandt? BRANDT Good. BRANDT’S MOM Get enough to eat sweet thing? BRANDT Yeah. Thanks mom. BRANDT’S MOM Sure anything for you son.

(Phone rings, and Brandt’s mom brings him the phone.) BRANDT Hello. Yeah who’s this? Oh hey what’s up? Yeah from high school? What? He was murdered? How? Why? Hey mom can I get a ride tomorrow to Beth’s house? BRANDT’S MOM Of course babe. BRANDT Yeah I’ll be there.

6 EXT. BERKELEY PEACE PROTEST- DAY 6

HANNAH is protesting for peace at UC Berkeley. When KATIE calls regarding the murder. (Hannah is holding a sign that says, “Honk for Peace.” Her phone begins to ring and a one-sided call occurs.) HANNAH Yeah Katie from high school? Nothing much…just at a protest right now. What’s going on? Bad news? Brian? Who? Who did it? Yeah Beth’s house. Of course I’ll be there.

7 INT. CARINA’S LIVING ROOM- DAY 7

CARINA is sipping on a martini when KATIE calls to relay the news about BRIAN.

(Carina is relaxing in a chair and sipping on a martini, when her phone rings.)

CARINA Ugh who’s this? Hello. Yes it is Carina who else should it be? Why are you calling me? Brian Smith? Oh I remember him. He was murdered? Oh my God! Tomorrow at 6? Um…I have to check my schedule first. Hold on a sec. (Carina sets her phone down and takes a few drinks. She didn’t actually have a schedule

to check.) Hey I think I can make it. See you tomorrow.

8 INT. KEVIN’S CAR- DAY 8

KEVIN is looking through his planner while driving to a meeting. KATIE calls to inform him about BRIAN. He lets her know he will do his best to make it to the reunion as soon as possible. (Kevin is driving in his car and looking at meeting times. His phone rings, and a one- sided call occurs.)

KEVIN Hello, this is Kevin. Oh hey Katie. Yes, what’s going on? Yeah, Brian Smith, your old high school lover. Murdered? I have a meeting at 5, but I’ll be there as soon as I can.

9 INT. MEGAN’S OFFICE- NIGHT 9

MEGAN is asleep at her desk after slaving over an article all day. KATIE’S phone call wakes her up. (Megan is sleeping over her computer when her phone rings. The noise wakes her up and a one-sided call ensues.)

MEGAN Hello. Yeah…Yeah. Um…vaguely…What happened?? Oh my God. Okay, Beth’s house at 6. I can make it.

10 INT. BETH’S ENTRYWAY- NIGHT 10

Most of the friends are here and waiting in the living room, except for HANNAH, CARINA, and KEVIN. BETH and KATIE wait by the door for their arrivals.

(There is a knock on the door, and Beth and Katie answer. Hannah gets in from Berkeley.)

HANNAH How have you been?

BETH As well as can be expected. HANNAH Well we’re here to make it better. KATIE Let’s go to the living room and see everybody else.

(There is another knock on the door. Beth and Katie open the door, and it’s Carina.)

CARINA Oh my God, that flight was so long. I need a drink. And where can I go to take a nap? I am so tired.

CARINA doesn’t say hi to anyone, and heads straight to a bedroom to sleep. There is another knock and the door and KATIE answers. KEVIN finally arrives after his meeting.

KATIE Oh look who arrives late. Everyone’s in the living room. Let’s go!

11 INT. BETH’S LIVING ROOM- NIGHT 11

The whole group is finally back together and begins reminiscing about the past. Awkward tension occurs when BRANDT brings up BRIAN and KATIE’S past relationship. After these events, the group separates throughout the house.

KEVIN Hey everyone sorry I’m late, I was in a meeting. It’s good to see everyone again. But where’s Carina? KATIE She’s in the other room taking a nap. Supposedly her flight was too long for her liking. KEVIN Gotta love her, anyways… (Kevin gives Beth a hug.)

How are you feeling? BETH I’ve been better. The group is still sitting around on the couch and having a good time. MEGAN brings up an old story to get everyone laughing. MEGAN Remember that time when Brandt tried to teach our chemistry class and Mr. Nelson got so mad and sent him to the Dean. (The laughing continues.) BRANDT That fool didn’t know anything about chemistry and I couldn’t let the entire class fail. I mean come on you guys. KEVIN Wait…wait. I can beat that one. Remember in tenth grade when Brian and Katie had Mrs. Kelly for history and they both got a D on their final. So on the very last day of school they went and saran-wrapped her car. (More group laughter.) BRANDT That was amazing. Those two were so close in high school. Do you guys remember that? We all thought they were going to date throughout college, get married, and have an annoying family. I don’t know…I guess Beth came along. You guys did stop talking right? KATIE Yeah. I mean, ever since high school we just kind of fell away from each other I guess. KEVIN Hold on. That can’t be right. Just a couple of weeks ago even, I swear I saw you two at that restaurant over there on the corner. I would’ve stopped, but I was already running late for a meeting. You guys were together.

KATIE Yeah once or twice we met for lunch. It was just like a casual thing. It really wasn’t anything. We were just catching up. (Beth begins to glare at Katie, and awkward tension and silence is apparent. Pan shot of everyone in the room, sitting in silence.) HANNAH Um…yeah. So it’s really a shame all of us didn’t keep in touch. BETH Yeah I really needed you guys. Just being here in the house all day. I mean it was really important to Brian that I was here to make a comfortable home for the both of us. Yeah well anyways…I liked it, but I was lonely. I could’ve used your company. BRANDT Well we’re here for you now. AMY Hey remember back in high school when we promised we’d be friends forever, and we made that pact that we’d always stay in contact. BETH Oh yeah! At the end of the year party. Those are some of my greatest memories. (Kevin’s phone starts to ring.) KEVIN I have to take this. I’ll be right back.

(Kevin walks outside while talking on the phone about work-related issues.) BETH Is anybody hungry? I have tons of food.

KATIE Yeah come on Megan; let’s go grab something. HANNAH I think I’m going to go upstairs and change into my nightclothes. AMY I’ll come with. (Brandt is left in the living room all by himself.) BRANDT Well I guess I’ll just go call my mom or something.

12 INT. BETH’S KITCHEN- NIGHT 12

BETH brings out some food for KATIE and MEGAN. The three get to talking, but then Beth leaves to take a shower. CARINA also enters to demand car keys so she can go get some cigarettes.

KATIE Ooh cookies. Those look good. BETH Those are for later guys. How about something a little more substantial. I have casserole, and this is from the old lady across the street. She’s amazing. Help yourself to whatever you want. MEGAN Thanks for everything Beth. BETH You’re very welcome. You know what…I’m feeling kind of stressed. I’m going to go upstairs and take a shower and attempt to unwind.

(Beth leaves, but Megan and Katie stay and continue talking to each other in the kitchen.)

MEGAN So I’m working on this new story about serial killers. It’s completely fascinating. I’ve been gathering facts from all around the country. I’m really excited; I think it’s going to be a Pulitzer. (Carina walks into the kitchen and interrupts Megan.) CARINA Who cares I couldn’t get any sleep. I need some cigarettes. Like right now. And I don’t have a car here, so I need one of yours. MEGAN Whatever you can use mine.

(Carina leaves and heads to the car. Katie and Megan are surprised by her attitude.)

13 INT. MEGAN’S CAR- NIGHT 13

CARINA gets in MEGAN’S car and rummages through her purse. She starts the car and checks the rearview mirror. She sees the image of a MASKED PERSON in the reflection and screams. She is then stabbed in the neck repeatedly and left for dead.

14 EXT. OUTSIDE OF BETH’S HOUSE- NIGHT 14

BRANDT steps outside to call his mother because he couldn’t get any service inside. He sees a car with the lights still on and goes to check it out. When he spots CARINA covered in blood, he freaks out and runs to his car to leave. In the process the MASKED PERSON comes from behind and beats him to death with a bat. He is then put in the trunk of his own car.

BRANDT Why isn’t my mom answering? (Brandt notices a car out front with the lights still on and walks towards it.) Is that blood? Oh my God…she’s dead! She’s dead!

BRANDT is extremely flustered and runs to his car to leave. While trying to unlock the door he drops the keys on the ground. When he gets up the masked person with a bat attacks him. He is then thrown in the back of his trunk. 15 INT. BETH’S KITCHEN- NIGHT 15

KEVIN comes back inside from his business call and he starts talking with MEGAN and KATIE. They joke about how all he does is work, and as soon as they get into it Kevin’s phone rings again. KEVIN Hey guys how have you been? I haven’t hung out with you in so long. MEGAN I was just telling Katie about my latest story. It’s about serial killers. KATIE It’s a little weird how fascinated she is about it, but whatever. KEVIN How’s that med school going for you? KATIE It’s good, it’s long, it’s tiring. It’s going though…you’ve been working obviously? KEVIN The market is really busy right now, and I’m settling a really big deal. MEGAN Whoa…whoa…okay stop right there. Can you talk about life outside of business? If you even have a life. KEVIN Actually, I’m starting to settle down. I just bought a house down in Laguna… (Kevin’s phone rings again, and Katie and Megan begin to laugh.)

KATIE

(Katie speaks in a sarcastic tone.) Another business call? He clearly has a life outside of work…okay? MEGAN Yeah seriously.

16 INT. UPSTAIRS- NIGHT 16

BETH has a towel around her hair and heads downstairs, while HANNAH and AMY are lounging on a couch, catching up.

AMY Can you believe how much Carina has changed? HANNAH Yeah she sure has. What about you? What have you been up to? AMY Nothing much. I recently just got back from the beach. I’ve just been relaxing…what about you? HANNAH I’m just doing protests right now and I’m at Berkeley for grad school. It’s a lot of fun. AMY Oh wow. Must have been a long trip down here.

HANNAH Yeah I’m really tired. AMY Well okay, you get some sleep. I’m going to go downstairs and check up on Beth.

17 INT. BOTTOM OF THE STAIRWELL- NIGHT 17

AMY walks downstairs, and a MASKED PERSON comes up from behind and smashes her head into the wall repeatedly. The killer drags Amy’s body into a closet and shuts the door.

18 INT. ENTRYWAY- NIGHT 18 MEGAN and KATIE decide to take a walk around the block.

MEGAN I’m in serious need of a breather. KATIE Let’s take a walk around the block.


MEGAN and KATIE are walking and talking when they find CARINA dead in the car. They began to freak out and Megan runs to the backyard to get KEVIN and Katie runs back inside to tell the others.

MEGAN So how have your classes been going? KATIE They’re good. Some professors are a little difficult, but it’s all very interesting. MEGAN Not to interrupt or anything, but what is Carina still doing here? KATIE Yeah I thought that bitch had to go get some cigs.

MEGAN I know what’s up with her…she’s so rude now.

(Katie and Megan get closer to the car and look through the window.) KATIE Oh my God! She’s covered in blood. What the hell is going on here? MEGAN I’m going to go to the backyard and get Kevin. You go inside and get everyone else.

(Megan runs to the backyard, and Katie runs inside.)

20 INT/EXT. UPSTAIRS/BALCONY VIEW TO OUSIDE- NIGHT 20 KATIE gets upstairs to gather her friends, and runs to the balcony to check on MEGAN. From upstairs, she sees MEGAN get pushed down from behind, and a MASKED PERSON then proceeds to drown Megan.

21 EXT. BACKYARD- NIGHT 21

KATIE rushes to the backyard to see if MEGAN is okay. The MASKED PERSON then grabs her from behind. The person takes off the mask and it is revealed to be BETH. Beth confronts Katie about her affair with her husband, BRIAN. A fight ensues, eventually leading to Beth choking Katie to death.

(Katie runs to Megan’s side)

KATIE Megan…Megan are you okay? Come on…please wake up! The MASKED PERSON grabs KATIE by her hair from behind, and the killer takes off the mask. We find out that the killer is BETH. Beth throws Katie to the ground and a fight ensues. BETH Did you enjoy my husband Katie? KATIE I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Just get away from me. You’re acting crazy! BETH You SLUT! (Beth proceeds to choke Katie to death.)


KEVIN walks back to the kitchen and notices some cookies on the counter. He eats a few of them and heads upstairs.


KEVIN enters the room where HANNAH is sleeping and he sneaks up on her and suffocates her with saran wrap. Kevin backs away from the body and we see BETH standing in the doorway. The two embrace and kiss. Then Beth begins to explain her actions.) KEVIN Your past is finally erased. Now we can begin our future together. BETH I’m sorry Kevin, but that’s not going to be possible. KEVIN What do you mean it’s not going to be possible? What are you talking about? (Kevin sits down.) BETH I might as well start from the beginning. My marriage with Brian was unsatisfactory to say the least. I mean we appeared to be the perfect couple, but as soon as our honeymoon ended…my house became a cage. And all of these people who were here tonight could’ve saved me. Every single one of them. One letter, one phone call, but that was too much. We vowed in high school that we would remain close forever and they broke that vow. My life, which became hell, meant nothing to them. So their lives mean nothing to me. As soon as I found out that slut was sleeping with my husband that put me over the edge. I tried to suppress it with medication, but it was destiny. I knew they had to die, but I also knew I couldn’t do it alone. So I remembered you. Faithful, pathetically obsessive Kevin. You didn’t think I noticed you, but I always saw you following me around like a sad, little puppy. All it took was one meeting and you were ready to kill for me. And you did a great job. I couldn’t have done this without you.

KEVIN What are you going to do now? Are you going to kill me? You can’t kill me. BETH Well not here, not now. But unfortunately for you I’m smarter than that. I made those cookies just for you. Did you enjoy them? (The poisoned cookies begin to kick in, and Kevin starts looking pale.) BETH Poor Kevin. You were useful though. (Beth gives Kevin a kiss on the cheek and walks away. Kevin is left to die.)

24 INT. ENTRYWAY- DAY 24

The sun is starting to come out, and BETH is at the door ready to leave. She stops and looks around and thinks about the events that transpired this past evening. She then smirks, and walks out the door, never to be seen again.
