TOTlEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Totley Residents Association A.G.M. heldon Monday 22nd April 1996, in TotleyLibrary was attended by Twenty people. The meeting was very lively with reportsand discussions held on many subjects.

A report was given by Mr KevinWalker on our local Youth Football Team, who have been very successful thisseason. Totley Residents Associationsponsored the nets and the pltch feesfor the year. My husband and myselfwere invited to the presentation of thetrophies at the Cricket Inn and it wasvery rewarding to see all these· younglads going forward to receive theirtrophies from a Sheffield United player. The tenants section of Tetley ResidentsAssociation ceased to exist on May 31st1995 due to the fact that no-one cameforward for the Committee and that ishow it still remains. Councillor Rossreported that it is likely TotleyLibrary will be opening 32 hours perweek. Our local Councillors suggested anew item for the Totley Independentcalled "Town Hall Gossip" so hopefullyall three will submit items of news.

The Green Belt issue was raised butwe have to await the outcome of thePublic hearing held last August. It wasreported that the College is due forclosure in 1997.

Dear Editorand I

Hamlet'Walks

A few weeks ago my husbandvisited Abbeydale Industrialwhet'€ my husband bought for mearound Totley' - for two reasons.

1. That occasionally we had walkedand talked with 'Campy' dut'ing the1950's when we were both members of thePennine Mountaineering Club. Michael,my husband seems to remember the lasttime we saw you was in 1959 in Wales.

Secondly, because from 1936 - 1956,I lived in Tot l.ey and loved it. Ithought you might like to hear aboutsome of my memories. I lived at 81Mickley Lane. The row of 4 cottageshave now been demolished and a pair ofsemi's are in their place. The housewas directly opposite the Spitfire.

I remember the Shepleys who builtthe Spitfire in memory of their son. Wewere all very upset when he went missingduring the War. The field in which theSpitfire was bu.i I t ,we children calledthe 1st field. It was a great Held forplaying in. Every year a family fromAttercl1ffe came to the 1st field fortheir annual trip. They would bring apicnic lunch and my Mum made them largejugs of tea. They used our toilet whichwas in the back yard. They came formany years - we accepted them as oldfriends and looked forward to theirvisit.

On top of Wings Hill. there was anAck-Ack battery stationed there duringthe War. The soldiers had no runningwater, ~o they used to bring their watertruck to the back of our houses onLaverdene Ave, and fill up with waterfrom our cellar tap. When the weatherwas hot, they used to spray the children~ we loved it.

Some of the wives and families cameto stay at our house, so they could seetheir husbands and dads. I don'tremember where they slept - we only hadtwo bedrooms. Perhaps they slept in the

cellar. My Dad had re~enforced the coalcellar so that we could sleep there ifwe were bombed. My Mum also made freshbread and cakes for the soldiers.During the War, the river in front ofour house was dammed to provide a staticwater tank. I hated this as itdestroy~d the beautiful river and itmade the rats come into our house.

1 went to Totley Church of Englandschool and at 10 went to school in thechapel down Chapel Lane. We held oursports day at the Cricket Inn. Mygrandmother lived in the chemical yardoff Queen Victoria Road, we used towatch the blacksmith putting new shoeson the waggOD horses.

I could gO on forever about mychildhood in Totley I loved it.Thanks fat writing the book, it broughtback many happy memories.

--.~~f~. ~~I'I'i A WONDER OF THE PEAK

Let us take a scenic walk of some 6miles to view one of the wonders of thePeak District - the landslip known asThe Alport Castles.

Park the car at the popular venueof Fairholmes in the Upper DerwentValley. I f you go a t the weekend, besure to go early* for after 10 am thewhole valley is pr-et t.y busy. Bootsdesirable fOr this outing on the hills;allow 4 hours to Savour the walk.

Take the forest path opposite thecar park exit. Yellow markers andfinger post show a route throughHaggside Woods direct to the imposingsite of Lockerbrook Farm, now the homeof the outdoor group known as theWoodcraft Folk. (The founder was BasilRawson - a great character). Linger awhile, if you ask the Warden, he willshow you the plaque in the attractivegarden to the memory of their founder.First class views of Derwent Edge andLadybower Dam. Head left to the crestof the track above Hagg Farm and strikeoff to the right. to the first ladderstile, towards Pasture Tor and Rowleepasture. Markers show a well definedpath. Breathtaking views of thenorthern edges of Kinder Scout. Win Hilland the Ashopwoodlands' snake valley enroute.

After approx. 1.5 miles along thepeaty path You will note a broken wallline on our left, opposite this pointyou may wish to head to the right, towards the head waters of OuseldenClough for 350 yards to locate a wartimecrash site of a Boulton Paul Defiantfighter 'plane. The two crew membersbaled out over the Edale Valley (enginetrouble). The aircraft has left a hugecrater and the engine haS since beenrecovered for a museum. Details of thiscrash story, artd a Meteor jet locatednear the head of Haggside plantation(private ground) are in Ron Collier's

'Dark Peak Wrecks' book. Retrace yoursteps back to the Rowlee Pasture trackand head forward to the final gem of thetrek above Birchinlee Pasture theimposing 'Alport Castles' (the largestlandslip in the country ~ a profusiverock scape and a photographer's dream.First class views to the heights ofBleaklow, Kinder and Margery Hill and, nestling in the valley, - Alport Daleand Farm. One could linger here formany an hour.

We start the return journey back tothe right and footpath across BirChinleePasture between Fagney and DitchCloughs, then a steep descent throughDitch Clough Plantation to the Westendvalley. The route is well marked allthe way - simply turn right along theforest track, adjacent to the WestendRiver and after a few hundred yards wejoin the road that fringes the top chainof reservoirs at the Howden Dam. Signalthe minibus at the signed stop for theshort drive back to the bustlingactivity at Fairholmes.

A welcome cuppa at the tea bar anda visit to the Information Centre makesthe day complete. Mention my name atthe latter - velCY :friendly and helpfulstaff, they will know who you mean bystating simply "Aircraft Wrecks!".

P.S. Don't forget to check the bustimes at Fairholmes, or if you prefer towalk back from the Westend valley viaHowden and Derwent Dams, this will addanother 3 miles to the walk.

Tn the 1993/4 and 1994/5 season myson played competitive football forEcclesall Rangers F.C. who play in theGT Sunday League and who are governed bythe Sheffield and Hallamshire F .A. Ibecame involved in helping with the cluband was asked to manage the team duringthat period. After some 25 boys appliedfor 10 places 1 had the unenviable task12 months ago of telling several boysfrom the Totley area that there were novacancies for them in the team. That isone of the hardest things I have had todo, tell a boy who wants to playfootball at a competitive level, sorry.I can' t offer yOU a place! "Why don'tyou start a new team for Totley?t! askedmy son who had several friends wantingto play, butunable to find aclub with muchsought aftervacancies. Asimple solutionone may beexcused forthinking, oh, howwrong I was!".

I contactedthe GT League andfilled ina formto apply for one of the 400 club placeswhich accommodate some 6,000 boys fromthe Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley andChesterfield areas. That was when Irealised it was not going to be a simpletask. We had to have a ground, insurance, official kit, nets, specialsize footballs, first aid equipment.registratiofr fees. affiliation fees, anexecutive committee with treasure, management and bank accounts, asecretary, an AGM!!!! t----hold on, weonly want a game of footoall on Sundays!True, but organising that many boys into

Wow! all wehad to do now was play football! Haltransporting or getting 16 - U13 boys toone place at an arranged time is not theeasiest job in the world but we managedit and played 24 league games and onecup match.

We lost the cup match by 1 goal tothe eventual runners up of the wholecontest, not bad I hear you say? Butwhat about the league? The final leaguetable reads:

That was enough to win Totley YouthFC second place in the league andpromotion to Div. "D". Additionally, following the clubs presentation nightat the Cricket Inn (thanks to, DonHutchinson for presenting the trophiesat short notice) TYFC were invited tothe GT Leagues presentation night at theDial House Club, not only as a promotionteam but as the Divisions most sportingteam as voted by the other teams in ourdivision. This above all is anachievement the boys were extremelyproud to win and one which reflects wellon the Club and Totley. Thanks to allthose involved especially our supportersand sponsors, it took £2,444 to startthe club and play 25 games, without acommunity team we would not have madeit! I'l-

GARDENING TIPS FOR JUNEI cannot remember a worse May for gardeners - prolonged cold, not much" rain,

constant frost has led to us being way behind generally. My prize leeks are notmuch bigger than when I put them in, in April, and the bedding plants will be waybehind last year. I hope the last bit of May and this month will be better.Enough moaning - let's look forward to Summer.

FLOWERS Feed flowering plants, especially sweet peas. Containers needa weekly dose unless you have used'Osmocoat· or similar slow releasefertilizer. Keep newly-set-out plantswell watered (not an easy joh withouthose pipes). Thin out seedlings ofannuals such as clarkia, cornflower orgodetia sown directly in borders andbeds. Stake taller plants as necessary.Dead~head peonies after flowering andcut back oriental poppies.

Watch out for aphids andcaterpillars and deal 'Withthem as soonas they are seen; spray perennialsagainst mildew at first signs. Finishplanting summer bedding and put outsmall perennials or biennials intonursery bed from seed sown earlier.

Take cuttings of pinks, lift divideand replant polyanthus, primroses andflag iris. Old clumps of mossysaxifrage can be divided - this is agood thing especially if they aretending to get brown in the centre. Asalpine plants finish flowering cut themback - this will keep the plants neatand compact and encourage them to makegood growth for next year. Sow winterflowering pansies into boxes placed incold frame - when they are large enoughto handle they can be pricked out intothe garden or potted on ready forplanting out later. Watch out forsucker growth on roses; cut them off asclose to the root as possible.

It's always as well to·havesurplus alpines for filling barein the rock garden and manycuttings can be taken now - roota sandy compost.

a fewspacesalpine

them in

VEGETA~LES Plant marrows now - theyshould be just right for the Show on the7th September. They need a good richcompost mound and a bit of protectionfrom slugs and snails. Thin outcarrots and beetroot sown earlier.Plant out celery plants and keep themwell watered. To keep onions growingsturdily water when soil is dry and givethem a weekly feed. Plant out leeksthe best way is to make a hole with adibher about 6" deep with one leekplaced in each hole, which is then wellwatered let the water carry in a

little soil. enough to cover the roots. No more filling is necessary.

Plant savoy and January Kingcabbages. Keep planting successionalplantings of salad crops and peas. Tohelp rhubarb build up a good crown fornext year remove flower stalks and keepthe plants well water~d and fed - likemany other plants they will appreciate atopdressing of compost. Gover curd oncauliflowers with leaves turned over toprotect them from the sun.

1R.EES. SHRUBS AND FRUIT The smallwhite maggots that are often found inraspberries (they don't taste verynicel) are a nuisance. They can becontrolled by dusting with derris now.Suckers that sprout up from fruit trees, especially plums and damsons, need to bedug out. Mildew is often troublesomeon tips of gooseberry shoots theseshould be nipped out and burned. Keeptying in shoots of blackberries andloganberries.

Keep newly-planted trees and shrubsweed-free and well-watered. Pick thepoisonous seeds of laburnum especiallyif there are :::hildrenaround.
