WHAT IS LACKING IN THE SUFFERINGS OF CHRIST?

In today’s Second Reading Saint Paul makes a statement which is sometimes misunderstood. He says: “[I]n my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church.” Is he claiming that Christ’s suffering was not sufficient for our redemption and that he, Paul, would complete it by his suffering? Not at all. That phrase “what is lacking,” may be understood as “what has yet to be endured.” Saint Paul was profoundly aware that there is an organic unity between Christ and each of us who, by baptism, are members of his body. (Cf. 1 Corinthians 12:27) “If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26a) Our sufferings, therefore, do not add anything to the value of Christ’s suffering; but they participate in it. By participating in Christ’s suffering as members of his body, Christ gives value and meaning to our suffering. It is redemptive in nature, because Christ’s suffering is redemptive. This is what it means to “offer it up”: we can unite our suffering with Christ’s for the world’s salvation. This is true sacrifice, a “making holy.”

Having said that, there is way too much suffering going on in the world today.

This is suffering that is brought on by human intervention—the many violent acts and shooting deaths, terrorist activity, and the persecution experienced by our fellow Christians in the Middle East. Yes, this suffering, too, has redemptive value, especially when those under attack give witness to their faith in Christ by refusing to deny that they are Christian in order to escape it. In his day Saint Paul spoke of his “anxiety for all the churches.” (1 Corinthians 11:28) This must weigh heavily on the heart of Pope Francis and it should on our hearts, too. The body of Christ is again under attack.

How fortunate we are to live where we do. Today we have the opportunity to

enjoy St. Peter’s Shin-Dig. Thanks to all who work so hard to make it happen and to all who come to enjoy the fruit of their labor. The body of Christ can share joy and fellowship, too.

This past week St. Charles Parish wrapped up the first phase of a capital

campaign for a new parish center and parking-lot repair. I want to thank Joseph Baricelli of Lynch Development Associates for his work in scheduling interviews, organizing the volunteers, preparing materials and mailings, and keeping us all informed of the progress of the campaign. However our work is far from over. Besides the redemption phase, which begins in August, there is more planning to be done. The planning committee will soon meet with the architect to share suggestions received for revisions to the initial design of the building. Then we will share the results of that process with the parishioners. I suspect that some of you will have suggestions for the plan as well. This is just as important as raising capital as another way for all parishioners to take ownership of this project. Given the fact that we have a five-year redemption period on the pledges and are required to have 80% of the funds on hand before beginning construction, we have plenty of time to get this done right.

During the first week of my farming vacation I mowed some former

pastureland, which had grown tall with grass. Then I baled it to get it off the ground. Of course the night before I would have baled it there was a brief but heavy rain. So after leaving it lie another day, I decided to fluff it up before raking it. This was done with an old-fashioned tedder with steel wheels and a crankshaft with pitchforks on the back. I don’t know exactly how old it is, but it is said that my grandfather bought it used around the turn of the last century. It still works like a charm as long as you drive in second gear and go about as fast as a team of horses would walk. All this for a load and a half of small square bales.

Please pray the rosary for persecuted Christians around the world, for good

weather and the conditions needed for so much farm work to be done; for those in our country who have been affected by earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes or floods; and, as always, pray for peace.

May God bless his people with peace. Monsignor Gorman
