Just as it did last year when the anti-union extremists set their site on the middle class once again the Team- sters are leading the fight. Over the past two years, collective bar- gaining was under attack. For many of us it was in our own home state. Attacks have been waged in Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and others. The start of these attacks on the middle class was fought no harder than it was in the state of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Governor made it his personal agenda to go after the col- lective bargaining rights of workers across their state. Teamsters and other labor unions fought back and fought back hard. More than one million signatures were gathered by opponents to force a vote to recall the Wisconsin Governor. Walker has been in office only a year but he angered Democrats and union members by pushing through the state legislature a law stripping public sec- tor unions of many of their powers. This is Teamster power. There was also a failed attempt by the Ohio state Republican Governor to limit collective bargaining rights in Ohio for pub- lic unions last year. Once again, the Team- sters prevailed and went on the offensive. Ohio Teamsters’ leadership fought to defeat Senate Bill 5 and that showed that Ohio voters support collective bargaining. SB5 would have stripped more than 350,000 public workers of nearly all their collective bargaining rights. Of course, right here in Missouri we also had a decisive victory over the Right-To- Work (RTW) agenda by the extreme right. Our own General President Hoffa came to Missouri to fight this attack with us at our state capitol in Jefferson City. In my opin- ion, his appearance at the state capitol along with hundreds of Teamsters and other labor unions was the turning point in our fight in which we prevailed last year. These were just a few of the fights that were waged with more being waged every day being led by the Teamsters Union. The battleground currently is Michigan, last week; Teamsters began to collect signatures to change the state constitution to protect collective bargaining rights. The amend- ment would guarantee the right to form, join, or help labor organizations to bargain collectively with a public or private em- ployer. Of course, our fight is a long way from being over here in Missouri but just as be- fore, we will rise to each occasion when our principals are attacked. Over the next few weeks, you will see Teamsters from across the state gathering signatures to petition to increase the minimum wage and lower the payday loan interest rates. The current pay- day loan rate is 44%. That is totally insane and it’s just another way to take advantage of a bad situation when so many may be in need of financial help. If you should happen to come across one of the petition circula- tors be sure to sign both petitions and tell your fellow co-workers to do the same. Also coming up is the General Munici- pal Election Day on April 3, 2012, here in Missouri. Be sure to exercise your right to vote! If you do not know your polling place to vote you can find out by going to the fol- lowing website https://www.sos.mo.gov/ elections/PollingPlaceLookup/. As al- ways, Remember United We Bargain and Divided We Beg! Teamsters Joint Council 13 Ballot Initiative Training On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, Teamsters Joint Council 13 held a ballot initiative training session at Local618. Aaron Burnet from Jobs For Justice pre- sented the training session. The meeting was very informative and helpful to all who attended. “Teamster from across the state of Missouri will be gathering sig- natures for two very important issues to the middle class,” stated Teamsters Joint Council 13 President Marvin Kropp. The first initiative being a $1.00 increase to the minimum wage, and the second initia- tive is lowering the interest rates of the payday loan businesses. Payday loan businesses charge an amazing 44% for a loan. “To me that is criminal, and puts struggling families who are in desperate need of help at great- er risk of falling even farther into debt,” stated Kropp. Any Teamster who would like to help obtain signatures, please contact the Joint Council at 314-428-2212.

Meanwhile, online fundraising forOhioDemocratshasquadrupled. Whatwe’reseeinginOhioandotherstatesthathavefacedattacksoncollec-tivebargainingrightsisthatattacksonworking families are turning ReaganDemocrats — and Republican unionmembersliketeachers, firefightersand

BrianBarnhart,a33-year-oldlieu-tenant with the Columbus fire de-partment, says it all: “I am sociallyconservative, I am a registered Re-publicanvoter andvoteda strictRe-publican ticket in 2010— but I amvotingwithDemocratsin‘12.” Themain reason is the attacks onworkers that IhavebeenseeingwiththeRepublicanParty. “Mitt Romney said that he sup-ported Senate Bill 5 and Issue 2, sohe’llhavealotofexplainingtodotopoliceofficersandfirefighters, nurses, teachers andworking people in gen-eral as towhy hewas on thewrongside of where Ohioans were,” saysTimBurga, thepresidentoftheOhioAFL-CIO.
