BEST OF BUSINESS 2012 What products and/or services does your company provide for the self-storage industry? We are a leader in providing portable container solutions for the self-storage industry. All our products are foldable, portable, affordable and designed to be assembled in approximately 20 minutes. Our top of the line Z-Box ® container can be portable and stacked three high. Our innovative GreenLite ® container is an environmentally friendly, lighter-weight alternative made for self-storage operators who do not need portable solutions. Both the Z-Box ® and the GreenLite ® container can be outfitted as offices, houses or emergency-relief operations. With more than 40,000 containers in the field, Universal Storage Containers ® (USC) has been honored with the “Best Container” award for two years in a row by Inside Self-Storage readers. What’s the most important trend affecting your segment of the self-storage marketplace, and how is your company responding to it? There are opportunities to save our customers money by taking advantage of new materials and designs, and negotiating volume material discount purchases. We are in a continuous R&D effort to reduce costs through innovation and volume purchasing to pass these savings on to our customers so they can have an advantage over their competitors. Tell us about your corporate culture. Why do employees like working for your company? Our corporate philosophy is that we only do business with friends, so all our customers are our friends. Our service goes beyond a supplier/ customer relationship; we take it to a higher level reserved for a close personal friendship. It is very satisfying to be liked by your customers, and we take pride in helping them get the best container and service in the world at the best price. This is why working at USC is not just a job, it’s an enjoyable experience helping our friends gain a competitive edge from our expertise and superior products and services. Tell us a little-known fact about your company or one of its leaders that would surprise most people in the industry. It seems every one of our employees has one or more unique experiences, talents, skills and/or hobbies that would surprise our customers. Our president/managing partner, Peter Nemiroff, is a descendent of Gen. Cropper from the American Revolutionary War. George Johnson, another partner, is a great golfer and hunting/fishing enthusiast. Our vice president, Rod Bolls, competes in Ironman competitions, and he and another USC team member, TR Maloney, completed a 100-mile marathon. Brendon Lemons, a USC sales executive, is both an ultimate-fighting winner and aspiring stand-up comic, who is fluent in French. Another sales executive, Sam Miskin, was a private investigator in New York and now is a volunteer fireman and outdoor sports enthusiast. We could go on and on with some of our international sales associates and support staff. There are even better facts, but we aren’t putting those in writing! What can you share with us about a not-yet-unveiled product or service that is sure to excite customers? Our Polar Bear ® freezer/cooler refrigerated containers are eco-friendly, portable and affordable products with a state-of-the-art “dual” cooler/freezer refrigeration system. These are just being introduced to customers. We are also rolling out our “Instant Office” line of portable Z-Boxes ® , as well as our “Large Joined Units” configurations for the military, sport and other large-scale entertainment and government events. How does your company connect with the communities in which it does business? We encourage community service and supporting local charities, as well as church-related outreach programs. Our most recent activity was to sponsor a bike-racing team which, incidentally, got pulled over for going too fast in Colorado. Has your company ever done business with anyone famous?
