MlK Elementary School. at the corner of E. Republica nand 32nd Ave E., is closing fts doors .

Mar lin Lut her King Jr. Elementary School, located at3201 E. Republican St., will dose its doors at the end ofthis academic year. Afte r years of decli ning enrollment, the Seatt le Schoo l District has ind icated that i t can nolonger support MLK Elementary and many other smallschoo ls throughout the city.

Instead of wa iting for the inevitable clos ure announcement, Principal Bar ry Dorsey has enginee red a me rgerbetween MLK Eleme ntary and T. T. Minor Elementary, which will ensure students a place at T.T. Minor (locatedat 1700 E. Union Street). Without the merger, studentscould have been ran dom ly assigned to schools throughoutthe dis trict. No w, fami lies can at least make plans for thei rchild ren for the 2006-2007 school year. As he announcedthe closure to the community council meet ing, Dorseyreass ured everyone thai "it's a great opportunity for thekids" and said , "It's clearly in the best in terests of our stu dents."

The successful Monte ssori Program init iated this yearwill continue at the T.T. Minor School location. It is expeeled to d raw a numbe r of new students to the school.Pr incipa l Barry Dorsey will be reass igned to Garfield HighSchool on a special appointment d uring Garfield's renovation process. Pr incipal Glor ia Mitchell of T. T. Minor willtake over as prin cipal of the new school. At this time, it isunknown what plans the District has for the MLK Elemen tary school build ings and property.

Man y pa rents, staff, and community members whoworked so d iligently to keep the school open were saddened by the closu re announcement. Our hope is tha t thestudents will ha ve an expa nded academ ic exper ience asmore services (includin g a full-time counselor, technica lworker , an d social worker) will become available a t thelarger facility.

Are you concerned abou t the aerial chemical sp rayingplanned for our neig hborhood in April and May? Representa tives from the group "No Spray Zone" presented alternatives to the City's eradicat ion plan for the gy psy mot h atMarch 's Community Cou ncil meeting. The g rass-rootsgro up was formed in 2000 in respon se to an aer ial sp rayingover Ballard, Magnolia, and Salmon Bay.

Gy psy moth infestation is a potential threat to our ecol0gy. but No Sp ray Zone's plea is tha t the City use othermet hods to kill off the moths. They contend that the chemica l used, Foray 48B, is no t necessa rily a safe chemical andcontains undi sclosed ing redients that are poss ibly harmfulto people, e specially those with supp ressed immune systems, respiratory illnesses, as we ll as small child ren. Theystate that the King County Healt h Depa rtment has recommended that "residents of spray a reas, especially personswi th comp romised immune sys tems and pe rsons with resp irato ry illness, take precautions to minim ize their exposureto the spray."

While the spraying is pla nned for a specific, one hund red acre site (from 21st Ave. E. to Martin Luther King, eastto wes t, an d E. Howe ll to E. Rep ublican, north to south),win d patterns may cause the chemical to travel up to a mile.No Spray Zone repor ted that sp raying may cause digestivetract reactions s imilar to food pois oning o r other allergicreactions.

The group presented the following alterna tives. Themo ths could be sprayed with Foray 48B from the grou ndinstead of using a helicop ter. Pheromone pe llets that confuse the moth s' scent and make the m una ble to find a matecould be aerially d ispe rsed, as well . While these pellets are achem ical, they are spec ific to the gypsy moth and wou ld notaffect butterflies. Or, the City could continue to tra p themoths with the g reen bai t traps tha t have been used in thepast several yea rs for detect ing the infestation. Each of thesealterna tives may be less expens ive tha n the aeria l helicop ter

After obse rving the current building frenzy in Mad isonValley, Sloan bega n to th ink about its impac t on our community. while the may or encourages high de nsity housingto provide for our increas ing urban popula tion, many ofthese new hou s ing units a re made with poor quality mater ials that do not take the environment into consideration.Seeing design flaws in neighborhood townhouses insp iredhim to do better; Sloan decided to join the ranks of northwest builders known as "green builders" who use highquality, environmenta lJy friendl y materials.

Sloan is committed to quality workm anship, rat herthan cheap and wasteful cons truction. Bella Dolce Cafe & BakeryBy Jenn ifer Ka rka r Ritch ie

While enjoy ing the unseasonably warm weather thismonth, I decided 10 check out a tiny, European-inspired cafeand ba kery for a mid-mornin g coffee and treat. A retrea t iswh at 1found.

Loca ted .11 2711 E. Mad ison Street, nea r All the Best PetCare and The Pregnan t Pau se, Bell a Dolce - which means"beautiful sweets" in Ita lia n - is my latest f iml. It's a comb ination of warm colors on the wall s, clanking pots in the veryvisible kitchen, anti que furni ture and mosaic tables, and aglass case of de sserts tha t draws visitors in from the doorway.

Owner and pastry chef Joanne Corsi opened Bella Dolce inMadison Valley nearly th ree years ago, after successfully establis hing a wholesale dessert busi ness. Bella Dolce specializes in desserts that invo ke the memories of yummy pastriesyou might have enjoyed as a child, or for me, the fond memories o fa trip I too k to Pa ris.

While it was hard to de cide betwee n the del icious lookingcakes. cupca kes. and pas tries, I chose to ind ulge in a ham andcheese brioche and a ca ffe Amedcano. Both were pe rfect. While brioche can be tr icky, this del icate, yet savory trea t embodied a taste an d texture that was both light and rich . I'llalso confess that I sampled the raspberry waln ut bar and:hocolate pecan bar, which were bot h d ivine, par ticularly ifyou like something a bit sweeter than brioche. And at a reasonable $6, Bella Dolce is right in line with other Mea cafes,The cafe is d osed on Sunday and Monda y to ba ke. I'd highlyrecommend a visit 10 this spot for so me "beautiful sweets."
