From May 2006 to February 2007 52 German cities with between 25,000 and 100,000 inhabitants took part in an idea competition.
A panel of independent judges selected Friedrichshafen as the T-City in Feb. 2007.
The joint T-City project involving citizens, companies and public and private institutions from the city of Friedrichshafen, as well as Deutsche Telekom and its partners.
T-City is an important milestone project for Deutsche Telekom.
The five year project (2007-2012) will demonstrate to Germany and the rest of Europe how important innovative information and communication technologies are for modern society.

Each city started with its own individual ICT profile.Starting with this profile, each city was to develop project ideas that would create a better target profile (increased quality of life and of the city as a place of business).The ideas for each project came from the cities.

T-City - The competition. Awards for the winning cities
Prizes for the winner: High-speed mobile and fixed-line infrastructure (HSDPA and
VDSL). Equipment, personnel and financial support worth up to 80
million euros.
Prizes for the nine finalists: Arnsberg, Coburg, Frankfurt (Oder), Görlitz, Kaiserslautern,
Kamp-Lintfort, Neuruppin, Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Schwäbisch-Hall each receive equipment, personnel and financial support worth 50,000 euros to put towards one of their project ideas.
The judges awarded a special prize worth 100,000 euros to Arnsberg’s e-daycare project.

Deutsche Telekom is pursuing a number of public project goals with T-City :
T-City demonstrates the value that innovative information and communications technologies (ICT) .
The project showcases the opportunities and potential contained within these technologies that can be unlocked using improved communications, streamlined techniques and by saving time, money and resources.
T-City is a perfect example of how innovative, user-oriented ICT applications can:
improve people’s quality of life. make the city a better business location. create new solutions for municipal projects. improve the connection between the city’s people and its
institutions.

A comprehensive campaign of activities was launched, coinciding with the “Seehasen” Festival (June 10th).
The HotSpots were frequently used A total of 38 HotSpots (telephone columns, multimedia
terminals, restaurants, hotels) can still be used free of charge until September 30th.
The innovative landing page (www.mobile-stadtportale.de) not only establishes a regional connection but also offers location-based services at HotSpots.
Starting in 2009, select cities and communities will be examined as potential candidates for future roll-outs based on experiences in Friedrichshafen.
