Facts and More FiguresW e have spoken to numerous m erchant* in town during

the p u t few month« and some of them have gently hinted tha t business is not as good as it m ight be. And they baaed th e ir com plaints on the fact that people were going out of town to buy. t

Facts as supplied by a gentlem an resident show th a t the re are approxim ately 20.000 in h ab itan tsln Lyndhurst. He figures th a t aach inhabitant is fed a t a cost of about 26 cents per day. Using those figures. $fi.ooo dollars should be spent each day by the people of Lyndhurst fo r food stuffs. M ultiplying th a t figures by 8 6 6 , the num ber o f daya in the year, he concluded th a t $1,825,000 should be «pent each year. N early $2,000,000. It staggered ua. Dividing the num ber of atorea fo r Lyndhurst into th a t figure and assum ing tha t each o f the stores receives an equal share of the business we found It hard to figure out why a good percentage m ore of the dealers do not w inter in F lo rida.

Sum m er o f course takes a good portion o f the local residents aw ay from the local business and there are quite a few other factors which tend to make the money spent each year total lest then $2,000,000. The biggest reason la a m ajority o f people shop out o f town. Considering carefare o r automobile money, and valuable tim e, we do not aee how the local women save money by shopping out o f tow n. It is a lamentable aituation.

1* w »s a disappointm ent to th is departm ent when we heard about the tie «core in the recent track meet between the A lum ni and the H igh School V a rs ity .

There we w ere torn between two fire*. Bu t we favored the A lum ni aggregation. Assum ing that some of the A lum ni men have grown old and rusty, the show ing they presented was gallan t indeed.

The score was 43-43. H enry Lagrenburg. the L ittle Jo h n , o f the team, took the high jum p event w ith a leap of 5 feet. 5 inches. He used to knock off & feet. 11 inches when he was in H igh School. Johnny IJpp enco tt running in the 100-yard dash and 220 came in second in each o f those events. H e waa nosed out each tim e by the va rs ity man, D ick Coughlin . Coughlin’s tim e was slower than L ipp inco tt's when Lipp inco tt ran the heats fo r the H igh School.

Bob Swenson, W a lt C ary, Cono Monoco. Pete Curcio, and Anthony G uidetti »rerent com peting Tho«» alum ni man would have changed the story. It would have been a w a lk aw ay fo r the A lum ni. A lthough it i* rum oured that G erlach running the m ile fo r the V a rs ity would have nosed C ary out in the m ile event. C ary is supposed to be washed up. Th is opinion is derived from the fact that W a lt cam e in sixty-ninth in a field o f 75 during a recent Fordham Cross County m eet Bu t w hat m any failed to note that Cross Country is a new departure fo r the winged C ary and alao he ran the whole distance on one leg. O r ao we have been made to understand. The story is, a ligam ent in the other leg was sorely tw isted, a ll during the race.

auccess they were deserve congratulations. Lyndhurst tu rn ed out as it has not turned out before and took p art In e i- recises which were un rivaled fo r th e ir sim ple d ig n ity and im pressiveness. Success came as the culm ination o f e ffo rt o f a com m ittee of local veterans from G eneral Joh n J . P e rshing Camp, Spanish W a r Veterans, and Harold B a rrin g e r Post, Am erican Legion. The veterans got together early and worked d iligen tly. About 2,000 local fo lk either m arched or attended the services a t V eterans' Pa rk .

T h is proved beyond doubt tha t I f a program is arranged p rop erly and g iven the necessary pub licity and attention, Lyndhurirt w ill respond. I t proved beyond doubt, too, that the ca lam ity how lers who m aintain that Lyndhurst never supports a c iv ic venture are wrong. Lyndhu rst w ill support a venture that is handled properly. Lyndhu rst has alw ays turned out in great numbers when the occasion called fo r It . And M em orial D ay proved it.

I t is our belief a lesson can be derived from the Mem o r ia l D ay success. M ore than ever, it appears necessary th a t a perm anent celebrations commi tee be organized in Lynd hu rst, one that would operate on a carefu lly planned budget and would provide celebrations fo r a ll the holidays on w hich celebrations must be held.

The plan we suggest Is th is : a com m ittee, such as a plan- u n it, com prising men and women representative o f the tow nship ’s c iv ic and social bodies, would be appointed a t the beginning o f every year. Such a com m ittee would hold regu la r m eetings. Its entire life would be aimed at the celebration o f various holidays: M em orial Day, Fourth o f Ju ly , Lab o r D ay, etc.

The committee would make its plan sufficiently in advance so Lyndhurst would be ready when the tim e came. T he celebrations would not be helter-skelter, hit-or-miss a ffa irs , soch as they ofen become when prepared under the s tra i.i o f disappearing tim e. Sufficient attention could be g iven to every detail. The celebrations could be then drawn out the entire day. Parades in the m orning, entertainm ent

' I d the afternoon, dances at night. W e have the fa c ilitie s : a ll we need is the tim e to make use o f them.

M oney would be in sufficient amounts to perm it the comm ittee to plan interesting celebrations. The township budget could w ell supply the base amount required by the com m ittee. Lyndhurst m erchants who would benefit by keeping Lynd hu rst residents in Lyndhurst during holidays could be

« counted on to contribute the rest."The idea undoubtedly has possib ilities. W e would like
