The retreat was hampered by thelarge numbers of sick and wounded andno one in the column had eaten properlyfor some time. Many commanders initiaillyrefused to allow their men to. wrap theirlegs and feet against the biting cold,which resulted in terrible frostbite andsuffering, especialiy amongst the nativetroops.

It soon became obvious thatAkbar Khan could not be trusted. Duringa horrendous withdrawal through highsnow-choked passes of the Khyber PassRoad, Elphinstone's demoralised Iforcesteadily dwindled in numbers as theyfell victim to snipers and the knives ofAfghan raiders. Men collapsed withexhaustion and either froze to death orwere murdered by the harassingtribesm en. _

By 13th January just over fifty 4251: Private, 44th Biting Cartridge.men of the 44th (East Essex) Regimentof Foot, with only twenty' muskets andvery little ammunition, together with theremnants of other regiments and someBengal Horse Artillery reached a defilein the Jagdalak PQssnear GQndamak,and prepared to make a last stand.

As things became even morehopeless, Captain Souter of the 44thwrapped the Regimental Colours aroundhis waist for safe keeping. Soon onlyCaptain Souter and three or four privatesand two civilians remained and weretaken into a captivity from which onlySouter survived.

The Afghans, consideringanybody with such a finely embroideredwaistcoat to be of great importance,eventually ransomed. him back to theBritish, complete with his 'waistcoat'.

GANIDAMAK

In 1839 the Army of theIndus, under the command of SirJohn Keane invaded Afghanistantaking Kabul on August 7 th 0fthat year. The' pro-British ShahShuja' was placed on the thronedeposing Dos Muhammad, whowas captured and returned toIndia with Keane and the largerpart of the BrWsh forces.

Akbar Khan, son of DosMuhammad, led an uprisingagainst the British in Kabull,surrounding the garrison under theaged and ineffectual command ofMajor General WilliamElphinstone, who had not seenaction since Waterloo.

The troops becamedemoralised by the lack ofleadership and continuing attacks.On January 6th 1842Elphinstone finally agreed toevacuate the country and the700 European troops, 3,800native troops and 12,000refugees began the withdrawal toJalalabad under terms of salfeconduct.
