Zero VOC & Low VOC
According to EPA (Environmental Protection
Agency) standard
• Technically, the term “zero VOC” paint applies
to paints that have < 5 g/L of VOC.
• The term “low VOC” paint has been applied to
paints having a wide range of VOCs from 30
g/L to as much as 250 g/L

• Definitions of Acronal ECO range
– Low Odour
– Low VOC’s
– APEO surfactant free
– Formaldehyde Free
– Ammonia Free
• BASF’s advanced production technology makes Acronal ECO
almost free of VOCs and odour causing chemicals without
affecting the functional properties.

Driving force for Low/zero VOC paint
• Legislation/government
• Industry itself
• Competition
However, there is No
strong consumer pull!
• Consumers don’t
understand VOC
• Consumers don’t see
benefits from low VOC
and are not willing to
pay a higher price

Summary
• ECO products give Low VOC, low odour to the
paint along with added properties
• Replacing synthetic enamel by acrylic or
Alkyd/acrylic hybrid would give better
durability
• Better durability leads to longer paint life
cycle.

• Alternatives to solvent based alkyds
• high solids (solvent based alkyds)
– “alkyd like” (familiar) rheology
– still significant solvent level needed
(not “really green”)
– difficult to achieve for tinted systems
(coloured pigment distribution)
