Syracuse Madrid Center Planning Your Schedule for Spring 2020

Prepare for Online Registration (scheduled for November 12–19)

STEP 1: Plan your schedule.

□ Consult the Schedule of Classes. Use the Timetable schematic to avoid time conflicts.

You need special permission from Syracuse Abroad to take any course other than those found on the Time Schedule. (Exceptions are made for pre-approved Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Liberal Arts courses for students accepted to that special program.)

□ Review this document and course descriptions on the Syracuse Abroad website.

STEP 2: Submit your course pre-selections on the Student Advising Form (SAF).

□ Log into your OrangeAbroad account. Go to Learning Content > Planning Your Schedule

Follow the online instructions to complete the Student Advising Form (SAF).

□ Submit your SAF by October 11.

Be sure to hit “Submit.” (Don’t simply print your SAF.)

Do NOT submit more than one questionnaire.

STEP 3: See your academic advisor(s) and upload your signed SAF to OrangeAbroad.

□ Print the PDF of your submitted SAF (emailed to you after submission), and take it to your advisor(s) to confirmyour course plan will keep you on track for graduation.

It is helpful to provide your advisors with descriptions or syllabi for the courses you want to have approved. You may request course syllabi from Madrid admissions counselor Rick Cieri.

□ Scan and upload the SAF signed by your advisor(s) to OrangeAbroad no later than October 25.

Upload to Questionnaires > Student Advising Form (with Advisor’s Signature). Be sure to hit “Submit” (NOT “Save”!). Only legible PDF files will be accepted. DO NOT SUBMIT A PHOTO OF YOUR SAF.

Syracuse Abroad will record any changes made on your uploaded SAF as a result of your meeting with your advisor(s). Please use the dropdown menu to indicate whether you have made any changes to your original selections.

STEP 4: REGISTER ONLINE for your classes November 12–19.

□ Please note that registration appointment start times vary.

□ It can be helpful to refer to your SAF when you register. You may return to OrangeAbroad to access your uploaded form at any time.

Grades, Transcripts, and Academic Resources IMPORTANT: You must remain in good academic standing to participate in our program. If you are placed on

academic probation prior to departure, you will be withdrawn from the program. You should carefully review other academic policies applicable to all Syracuse Abroad programs.

At Syracuse University, all work for registered classes must be completed on or before the degree certification date. Ifyou are graduating, check with your home college regarding your degree certification date, and be certain that you are aware of any remaining degree requirements.

Information on enrollment policies, grades, SU library resources, registration, internships and independent research can be found on the Preparing to Go website. Visiting students should also refer to this website for information on transfer credit and requesting an SU transcript.

Carefully review academic policies applicable to all Syracuse Abroad programs.

If you need to take an online course during a semester abroad, first review Syracuse Abroad-specific requirements and advice.

Arrangements to do coursework on an independent research basis, if needed to satisfy a degree requirement, must be made in advance. Due date for proposals is November 15.

Check your @syr.edu email address regularly for messages from Syracuse Abroad.

Madrid Center Course Information All Madrid Center courses expected to be offered this semester are listed on the provisional Schedule of Classes and Timetable. Syracuse University reserves the right to cancel a course with low enrollment or to change the course format to an independent study.

Where there is greater demand than space available in a course, preference for enrollment is given to majors and minors or others who can demonstrate academic need (i.e., the course fulfills a specific requirement that cannot be met by another course) and who have listed the course among their Primary Course Selections on the SAF.

Be sure you have met all prerequisites for courses you plan to take. Prerequisites are indicated in course descriptions, with equivalent courses described for visiting students. If you do not meet the prerequisite, do not include the course on your SAF.

Program Requirements All Madrid students are required to take the following:

A Signature Seminar (Azahar, Imperium, Spanish Identities, or Marine Ecology of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa; 3 credits). You may not drop the Signature Seminar.

A minimum of 12 credits in addition to Signature Seminar credits. Due to the Spanish immigration requirements that undergraduate students enroll on a full-time basis, you may not drop below 12 credits (excluding any Signature Seminar credits) at any point during the semester.

One Spanish language instruction course. Students at an advanced level (300+) must take an ADDITIONALcourse taught in Spanish. You can find out your specific requirement(s) by identifying your language level and consulting the following chart. Please also refer to the course descriptions on our website.

What Spanish course(s) should I take?

Spanish Language Placement Exam Visiting students: If you are unsure of your language level, request Spanish course syllabi from Madrid Admissions Counselor Rick Cieri and consult with an advisor in the languages department of your home school.

MATRICULATED SYRACUSE STUDENTS: You MUST take the online Spanish language placement survey/exam (accessed through MySlice) BEFORE submitting your SAF UNLESS one of the below applies: You have already taken one or more SPA classes at Syracuse, OR

You have previously taken SU’s Spanish online placement exam.

All other SU students—including beginners, native and heritage speakers of Spanish, AND students with AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer Spanish credit—must take the placement survey/exam. This will identify your language level and allow you to register in MySlice for the appropriate course. Instructions on accessing this exam are available online.

SU Spanish beginners: YES! Even if you have no experience studying the language, you must complete the exam in order to receive your SPA 101 placement. If you don’t take the exam, MySlice will prevent you from registering online for your Spanish class.

ALL STUDENTS, please note! The exam was written for first-year college students. When you are asked how many years you have studied Spanish in high school, respond with your TOTAL NUMBER of years of Spanish study, whether in high school or college.

Study Tours and Course Fees Some courses include required study tours, site visits, or activities that are an integral part of the course. Please carefully review the Course-Related Fee Sheet included with this packet, and share it with your parents/guardians if they are responsible for your fees. Fees to cover the costs of supplies and mandatory field study are charged automatically to your Bursar account when you register.

If you register for any course with a mandatory study tour, you must participate in this field study. DO NOT PLAN PERSONAL TRAVEL until you get to Madrid and know when you may be required to take part in a class-related study tour, make-up classes, Signature Seminar sessions, exam periods, and other academic commitments.

Online Registration Dates and Details: November 12–19 You will register online November 12–19. In early November, you will receive information about registering for your Madrid Center courses. Be sure to regularly check your email for this information. The Registration Packet will include instructions, FAQs, and your individual registration appointment time.

During online registration, you must register for 12–16 credits (up to 5 semester courses), not counting Signature Seminar credits.

Remember that some courses are likely to reach capacity and close during registration. Be sure to select some alternative classes on your Student Advising Form, in case a class you would like to take is closed when you register.

Any registration restrictions will be confirmed or announced in the detailed registration instructions emailed to you prior to online registration.

Special Program: Madrid Center & Liberal Arts at UAM This section applies to you ONLY if you have applied and been accepted to the Madrid Center & Liberal Arts at UAM special program.

This program differs from the Madrid Center program in several significant ways:

Because Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) follows a different academic calendar, you must stay beyond the regular SU Madrid Center program end-date. The program is expected to end on May 30, 2020.

On occasion, the UAM orientation dates may conflict with the pre-semester Signature Seminar, preventing UAM program students from participating. If this is the case, Rick Cieri, your Admissions Counselor, will notify you as soon as UAM releases its orientation calendar.

All students will participate in Syracuse Abroad online registration November 12–19 to register for Madrid Centercourses. However, UAM has its own online application and registration processes for their courses.

After you are accepted to the program, Rick Cieri will work directly with you to guide you through UAM-specific admissions and registration procedures.

There are additional deadlines for UAM program students:

You must upload passports and official transcripts to OrangeAbroad by October 18.

You must complete the UAM application and online registration processes by October 23.

You must also complete the Learning Agreement (which indicates the courses you wish to take at UAM) andsubmit it to Rick Cieri no later than October 23. In November, you will receive information directly fromUAM regarding pre-enrollment for UAM courses.

Grades for courses taken at UAM may not post to your SU transcript until our office receives your official transcript from UAM (as late as August). At Syracuse University, you must complete all work for registered classes on orbefore the degree certification date. If you are graduating, seek advice from your home college regarding your degree certification date.

UAM Course Selection Process You will receive a list of UAM courses in the coming weeks. In the meantime, as you complete your SAF, you will find a placeholder selection for a UAM course at the bottom of the dropdown menus for Primary and Alternative Courses (“UAM Liberal Arts course(s) TBD [3 cr]"). Please select 3 to 4 Madrid Center courses of interest (Primary and Alternative Course Selections, in descending order of preference). Then use the UAM course placeholder to indicate your intention to take one or two courses at UAM.

Page 6: Syracuse Madrid Center Planning Your Schedule ... - Abroad · 5/30/2020  · All students will participate in Syracuse Abroad online registration November 12–19 to register for

As you pre-select your Madrid Center courses, please be aware that the commute by train from the Syracuse Madrid Center to UAM takes about 30–45 minutes (the train stop is located on the UAM campus). This means that you cannot take a course at the Madrid Center that meets immediately before or after a UAM course. Therefore, you may need to change your Madrid Center course choices after you learn more about the timing of the classes available at UAM this spring.

Once you have received the UAM course list for spring 2020, select four (4) UAM courses of interest (both primary and alternative selections, in descending order of preference), include them on your UAM Learning Agreement, and have them approved by your advisor(s).

Please note: Planning a schedule that includes one or two UAM courses, the required Spanish language course, and other Center courses may be challenging or not possible. This will depend on your language level, what Center courses you need or want, and the final UAM class schedule. If you participate in this special program, our Madrid Center staff will work with you to balance these considerations as you finalize your schedule during the schedule adjustment period.

Recommended Center Courses Courses taught at our Madrid Center that we recommend for students in the UAM liberal arts program include the upper-level Spanish instruction courses (SPA 302 and SPA 428) and the following content courses taught exclusively in Spanish:

SPA 325/HST/LAS 322 – Colonial Latin America

SPA 364/HOA464 – Modern Spanish Art

SPA/WGS/HST 417 – The History of Women in Spain

SPA 400.2 – De Madrid al Cielo: The Culture of Modernity and the Urban Experience in Spain’s Capital

SPA 400.5/FIL 300.5 – Spanish Comedy, Film and Society

Course-Related Fees Madrid - Spring 2020

Review and give to your parent/guardian.

Students who register for any of the courses listed below will be charged a fee to cover special activities, such as study tours or site visits, which are an integral part of each course. Study tour fees may reflect the cost of transportation, accommodations, some group meals, and most site entry fees. This is not a bill.

Fees are billed from Syracuse University following the online registration period and will appear on a subsequent Bursar statement. Students receive an email notice to view their bill in MySlice. These fees are not included in either the tuition or program fee charges, which are typically billed prior to course fee billing. Any fee increases or new course-related fees approved after this date will be announced prior to registration. All students who register for a course with a course-related fee are required to pay the fee, even if they are only auditing the course.

Financial Deadline to Withdraw from the Program: Please refer to the SU Tuition, Fees, and Related Policies Bulletin for information on refund of course-related fees for students who withdraw from the program voluntarily, involuntarily, or due to suspension or expulsion.

Financial Drop Deadline: Students who drop a class by the Financial Deadline indicated in MySlice may request a refund of any uncommitted and unexpended portion of the course fees. There is no refund of course fees to students in the program who make course/credit changes after this deadline, nor to those who fail to attend a required study tour. Students are advised not to make personal travel plans until they are abroad and aware of all of their academic commitments.
