Health and SafetyNavigationBecause you will be with the group, the chances of your getting hopelessly lost are greatly reduced. Once you get there, Tanya will provide you with directions so that you can show them to any taxi or tuk-tuk driver to easily get back to our hotel. We will also provide you the phone number to our hotel so you can call at anytime you need help.

Speaking Thai - Sawatdee-Ka or Sawatdee-Kap? (Hello ladies, Hello gents)Thai people are very friendly, and love to talk to Westerners, as well as are very patient. We’ll be in a city that is often traveled by visitors, and you’ll find many people able to speak English with you. However, as with many countries, it’s always a little easier to know a few key phrases of Thai just to get around. Tanya will clue you in to several of these key phrases you can use for your dining, bartering, and getting around use. Check out www.RosettaStone.com and brush up on your Thai speaking skills.

Women in ThailandWhere we’ll be staying, Thailand is very Westernized as far as women’s dress is concerned. However, although you may be wearing tank tops during Thai Bodywork training, always bring a cover-up or shawl for public areas. Temples require women to cover their shoulders and wear clothing past their knees as a sign of respect. Thailand is very safe for women. Tanya traveled alone there on her first trip and had a wonderful time. However, as there are language barriers and other cultural differences, being mindful about how you dress and interact will help to ensure that you will have a safe and pleasant experience.

Health Considerations & Recommended VaccinesWhile the health risks of travel in Thailand can seem more intimidating than visiting a Westernized city like Paris, few travelers experience more than an upset stomach or occasional digestive issues. Clinics and hospitals are quite good throughout the country, particularly in major cities. Most prescription drugs and over the counter treatments are readily available in most areas of Thailand. Though no immunizations are required for travel into Thailand, we recommend consult-ing a physician or visit www.thetraveldoctor.com for more health information. The Centers for Disease Control also offers guidelines at their website (www.cdc.gov). Talking to your doctor a few months before your departure is advisable as some vaccines require several doses to be fully effective. Once you are registered, you’ll receive a packet with a list of what to bring, including helpful healthy travel ideas.

Food & WaterDrinking WaterBottled water is available at the hotel, as well as at just about every shop in Chi-ang Mai. As with most foreign travel it is essential that you AVOID drinking tap water. Some environmentally concerned travelers may bring water filtration kits, which can be found at any camping supply store. This reduces the number of plastic bottles you will leave in Thailand.

Tom Yum Yum Yum - Food in ThailandOne of the best things about visiting Thailand is the food. It’s amazing. It’s color-ful, affordable, and packed with so many fresh flavors. Some people say stay away from raw foods to stay keep their digestion healthy, yet so many people enjoy these foods - think fresh papaya - and never get sick. Tanya will recommend some of the more reputable restaurants for when you are out exploring. There are many wonderful vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free friendly restaurants as well, often filled with fellow Thai Bodywork students from all over the world. Please let us know if you have any concerns about your diet.

MoneySpending MoneyThailand is very inexpensive, relatively speaking. For example, a meal will cost about $3-7 USD including beverage. Street vendors selling “chai yen” or Thai iced tea, usually charge about $1 USD, but restaurants will triple this price. A typical Thai Bodywork session can run anywhere from $6-45 USD per session. Because most of your expenses, such as hotel, some group travel, and training will be covered as part of the basic package, you will need very little for spending.

That said, if you like to shop or plan to receive Thai massages while there, you might want to budget some spending money. $500-$750 is usually enough for most people. There are plenty of ATM machines available, so bringing less is advised, however, ATMs now charge a flat rate plus a percentage. Traveler’s Cheques are not recommended due to higher fees.

Currency Exchange RateAt the time of this writing, the exchange rate was about 31 baht to one US dollar. Bigger bills get better exchanges (i.e. $100 cash yields better than 5 $20 bills). We do NOT recommend Travelers Cheques as the ex-change rate is higher. The exchange rate changes daily, so look online for the most current information. A good online resource for this is www.x-rates.com/calculator.html. We also recommend downloading a currency app for your smartphone to help with out-and-about shopping.

Keeping In TouchInternet Access - Our hotel options have free WI-FI internet onsite. Many restau-rants and shops have Wi-Fi all over Chiang Mai where you can Facebook or email friends and family, post photos of your adventures and even use Zoom, Skype or Facetime to call home.

Phone Calls & Mobile Phones - Keeping in touch via Skype, Facetime or email is much more economical and removes the obstacle of large time difference. Check with your cell phone company about making your plan international. Also Travel Pass is a new resource that charges $10/day to keep your US number working abroad. Great for keeping your business going and staying in touch.

Time Difference - Depending on where you hail from, there can be a significant time zone difference between Thailand and home. For example, when it is noon in Min-neapolis, it will be midnight the next day in Chiang Mai. You can find out what time it is in any part of the world at many websites.

Emergency Contact - Once you register for the retreat, we will send you a confir-mation letter that will include the phone numbers for our hotels in Thailand should family or friends need to contact you in an emergency.

Extending Your StayTwo weeks is nowhere near long enough to see the entire country of Thailand. As a group, we will be focused mainly on the Thai Bodywork training capital of Chiang Mai. If you want to see more of the country or other nearby SE Asian areas, and you can afford the added time away from your life, we highly recommend extending your stay.

To assist you with your travels, local travel agents in Thailand can easily put together some sight seeing and/or trekking packages. Or you can be spontane-ous and feel out what you most want to visit after arriving in Thailand. You are welcome to plan your own travels as well.

It is our strong suggestion that you plan extra time in Thailand AFTER our retreat rather than before. This will give you the time to get acquainted in this very different culture. You will also meet many other people from our group or while in Chiang Mai who might make excellent travel partners.

Suggested Tours & Trekking Experiences• Ankor Wat - The ancient, magical temple in Cambodia.

• Rock Climbing/Mountain Biking/Zip Line Jungle Tours/White Water Rafting/Kayaking and more - We’ll hook you up with a good friend of Tanya’s who has one of the most successful tour companies in Chiang Mai. Pick your sport and find nirvana. Day or multi-day packages available.

• Bangkok - Take a few days in Thailand’s capitol city to check out the Emerald Buddha, Wat Po and other great sites.

• Head South - Hit the beaches of Southern Thailand for fun in the sun such as Phi Phi Island, Phuket, Krabi and more. Affordable Flights

Websites like Kayak, Hotwire and Orbitz can offer great deals. China Airlines is also known for their inexpen-sive fares. Most people pay between $1000 and $1800 to get from the USA to Bangkok. European flights tend to be a bit less expensive.

Travel Back HomeTo give you the maximum support in your travel plans, we include the return to Bangkok in the package. We’ve included an option to add a night in Bangkok if you are flying home later on Dec 1.

Of course you can always arrive early and simply meet us in Bangkok. However, if you do plan to extend your stay and travel on your own, be sure to pick up a copy of The Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand.

Training Options & DescriptionsFor Experienced Thai Students• Intermediate/Advanced Thai Bodywork Training w/Ajahn Pichest (25 CEs, 5 days per week) - For students who have taken 3 or more of Tanya’s Thai trainings (or equivalent with another teacher), you will be taking the pilgrimage via tuk-tuk (truck taxi) to Hang Dong to study with Master Ajahn Pichest for one or both weeks to honor our lineage and work in a more playful, intuitive, workshop style setting. Pichest’s training is approved with THAI Alliance for RTT hours at 25hrs per week. Also this is where the world’s best Thai Bodywork practitioners go these days.

For Beginners and/or All Levels• Abdominal Chi Massage 1/Chi Nei Tsang I Training with Ohm (20 CEs, 5 half days) - Back by popular demand, this year we’ve included an optional Abdominal Chi Nei Tsang course located very close to our hotel. We are very excited about this option as many of our past year’s travelers received tremendous healing from Ohm’s work and professionalism. We can’t wait to study some more with her! Learn a 1 hour practice to heal the abdomen. The Taoist sages of ancient China observed that humans often

develop energy blockages in their organs that result in knots and tangles in their abdomens. These obstructions occur at the center of the body’s vital functions and constrict the flow of Chi (energy), our life-force. The negative emotions of fear, anger, anxiety, depression and worry cause the most damage.Problems can also be caused by overwork, stress, accidents, surgery, drugs, toxins, poor food and bad posture. Ohm, our teacher, has studied with Khuni Ni for 10 years in Universal Healing Tao Center in Chiang Mai Thailand and has more than 25 year’s of experience in Chi Nei Tsang.

• Beginning Thai Bodywork Training (30 CEs, 5 days) - Are you new to Thai Yoga Are you new to Thai Yoga Bodywork or have a little training and want more? You will be studying with a nearby school in a 5 day Intro course to Thai Yoga Bodywork. Each student will receive a manual and a certificate upon completing the course.

Other StudyThere are plenty of other schools and teachers to study with while in northern Thailand. If you would like help in scheduling more train-ing before or after our trip, please contact Tanya and she can work with you. Suggestions include: Homprang’s, Loi Kroh School, and more.
