In 1972, AMSOIL INC. introducedAMSOIL Synthetic 10W-40 Motor Oiland became the first company in theworld to market and manufacture anAmerican Petroleum Institute (API)rated synthetic motor oil. In 1975,AMSOIL introduced a synthetic dieseloil, and with it, coined the term“extended drain intervals.”

Since then, AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils have been used as extended drainlubricants in transportation, equipmentand stationary engine applications. Inevery industry, they have proven effec-tive in improving engine durability andfuel economy. AMSOIL customersreport significant savings realizedthrough reductions in downtime, partsreplacement, lubricant replacement, lubricant disposal and fuel consump-tion. Fleet demonstrations and inde-pendent testing confirm what AMSOILcustomers report: using AMSOIL syn-thetic diesel oils saves money.

Superior PerformanceAMSOIL synthetic diesel oils lubricateand protect diesel engines better thanconventional lubricants do.

Volatility — AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils’ volatility is exceptionally low whichkeeps oil consumption rates low andinhibits oil thickening. For example,AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy DutyDiesel and Marine Oil loses only 6.27 per-cent of its mass to volatility in the NoackVolatility Test. Other popular 15W-40oils lose as much as 16.98 percent.

Thermal Stability — The excellent ther-mal stability of AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils helps keep oil oxidation rates low, inhibits sludge formation and ensuresproper engine lubrication and protection. It is a critical factor in safely extending oildrain intervals.

Oxidation Resistance — AMSOIL syn-thetic diesel oils’ outstanding oxidationresistance keeps engines cleaner longerfor efficient operation and long life.Oxidation resistance is also a critical fac-tor in extended drain intervals.

Low Temperature Performance — Thecold temperature fluidity of AMSOILsynthetic diesel oils enables cold enginesto start easily, protects cold engines frompremature wear after engine startup, pro-motes excellent cold temperature fueleconomy and eliminates or reduces theneed for inventories of seasonal oils.

Superior ProtectionFully formulated motor oils containadditives that perform functions thelubricating oil basestocks alone can’tperform. For example, detergent-alka-linity additives inhibit the formation ofdeposits on hot engine surfaces andneutralize acids. Dispersants inhibitwear caused by soot and debris.Viscosity index improvers give lubri-cants multi-grade viscosity. Other addi-tives inhibit lubricant oxidation, metaloxidation, rust and foam or preventcomponent damage when a full film oflubricant isn’t present to prevent it.

“With AMSOIL Synthetic15W-40 Heavy Duty Dieseland Marine Oil, the timebetween service intervalsincreased 100 percent.Instead of a pumper comingin four to six times a year, two to three times issufficient. Yearly savingsare about $2,000 in engineoil, $9,600 in labor and$1,400 in disposal fees.”

AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils are for-mulated with the highest quality addi-tives available to ensure properlubrication and protection in extendeddrain use.

Wear Protection — Wear protection isprovided by the lubricating oil in areaswhere a full lubricating film developsbetween moving parts, such as the bear-

Four-Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172B)(40 kg pressure @ 150°C, 1800 rpm for 1 hour duration)

ings. It is provided by anti-wear addi-tives in areas where a full film does notdevelop, such as the valve train.

The Four Ball Wear Test (ASTMD4172B), a test designed to measure theeffectiveness of anti-wear additive sys-tems, shows AMSOIL Series 3000Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oilproduced wear scars as much as 39 per-

cent smaller than those produced by com-peting petroleum and synthetic diesel oils. That’s significantly better wear protection.

Shear Stability — Some VI improversbreak down in demanding operating con-ditions. When an oil’s VI improverbreaks down or shears, the oil no longerretains its intended viscosity over itsintended temperature range, rendering

Lasting control of soot, other contami-nants and low temperature deposits arean integral element of AMSOIL syntheticdiesel oils’ extended drain capabilities.

Complete Protection — AMSOIL syn-thetic diesel oils also contain antifoa-mants to prevent persistent oil foaming,anti-rust agents to inhibit rusting and anti-oxidants and metal deactivators, both ofwhich retard oxidation processes.

Superior ProfitabilityAMSOIL synthetic diesel oils save dieseloperators money through increased fueleconomy, increased engine durability, reduced oil inventories and extendedlubricant drain intervals.

Fuel Economy — Independent testingand fleet demonstrations show enginesequipped with AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils operate with better fuel economythan engines equipped with other dieseloils do. Fuel mileage improvements inexcess of three percent have been doc-umented in independent testing (seepages 6 and 8).

Engine Durability — Fleet demonstrationoil analyses comparing the performanceof AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils to com-petitive products show lower rates ofwear metal generation with AMSOILproducts (see pages 7 – 10). Engine part

the oil unable to protect the engine frompremature wear in high temperatures.

AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils are highlyshear stable. Shear stability is especiallyimportant for engines that operate atconstant speed, such as stationaryengines, marine engines and farm tractors.

TBN and Detergent-Alkalinity —AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils are for-mulated with 12 Total Base Number(TBN) , a high value designed to providesuperior control of corrosion and hightemperature deposits in extended drainservice. Most conventional diesel oils’TBN equals 8.

AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils’ highlyeffective detergent-alkalinity additiveshelp piston crownlands and compressionring zones stay clean, inhibit bore pol-ishing and piston deposits, minimizecylinder liner wear, minimize ring wearand breakage, and help keep oil con-sumption rates low.

The ability of AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils to maintain high TBN values setsthese oils apart as superior extendeddrain lubricants.

Dispersancy — Dispersants control sootand other contaminants and inhibit theformation of sludge and deposits on lowtemperature areas, such as the pistonskirts and adjacent areas.

inspections confirm the outstanding wearprotection provided by AMSOIL syn-thetic diesel oils (see page 9). Lowerrates of engine wear improve enginedurability, providing longer intervalsuntil first engine teardown, greater inter-vals between overhauls and longer enginelife.

Oil Inventories — The outstanding lowtemperature fluidity and high tempera-ture protectiveness of AMSOIL syn-thetic diesel oils eliminate the need forspecial inventories of seasonal oils.AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils are alsoformulated for use in gasoline engines,so separate oils for diesel and gasolineengines are also unnecessary.

Extended Drain Intervals — AMSOILsynthetic diesel oils bear the Mack EO-M,Volvo VDS and VDS 2 labels, showingthey meet Volvo’s demanding extendeddrain performance specifications. Fleetdemonstration results and the experiencesof owner-operators confirm that AMSOILsynthetic diesel oils provide excellentextended drain service (see page 8 – 10).

At the request of AMSOIL INC., anindependent research institute conducteda month-long test comparing the fuelconsumption of class 8 diesel trucksequipped with AMSOIL synthetic lubri-cants to that of class 8 diesel trucksequipped with conventional lubricants.

The research institute used the SAE J1321Joint TMC-SAE Fuel Consumption TestProcedure Type II, an industry standardtest for comparing in-service fuel con-sumption of test and control vehicles.

Carefully matched vehicles traveled aroute representative of typical long-haulinterstate highway operations. Conditionsincluding speed, tire pressure, headlightand fan use and window opening wereheld constant, and testing proceeded onlywhen wind and temperature conditionswere within testing guidelines.

The test vehicles were equipped withAMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in the engines,AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 20W-50 Racing Oil in the transmissions andAMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W-90 Gear Lube in the drive axles. Thecontrols were equipped with ShellRotella T 15W-40 in the engines, QuakerState SAE 90 in the transmissions andCitco 85W-140 in the drive axles.

The trucks were equipped with auxil-iary weigh fuel tanks and quick discon-nect couplings to facilitate accurate datagathering. The weight of fuel consumedby the control and test vehicles aftereach driving segment was compared. Results were evaluated according toaccepted statistical practices.

FindingsThe vehicles equipped with AMSOILsynthetic lubricants demonstrated up toan 8.2 percent increase in miles per gal-lon (mpg) over the mpg obtained by thevehicles equipped with the control lubri-cants. Data showed mpg increases up to3.42 percent comparing engine oils alone.

What Does a Savingsof 8.2% Mean?Imagine a fleet of 100 class 8 vehiclestravelling an average 120,000 miles peryear at an average 6.5 mpg with dieselfuel at $1.40 a gallon. The fleet spendsan annual $2,584,615 on fuel.

Now imagine the fleet uses AMSOILproducts and improves its miles-per-gallon by 8.2 percent. The fleet nowspends $2,388,739 on fuel annually. That’s a savings of $195,876.

That’s enough to pay for a year’s worthof AMSOIL synthetic lubricants for theentire fleet and a year’s worth of fuelfor three trucks — with cash left over.

Fleet Tests: Wear ProtectionAMSOIL synthetic diesel oil’s protective chemistry was tested in fleets ofDetroit Diesel, Cummins and Caterpillar engines. The results showAMSOIL chemistry protects engines from ring deposits, ring wear, ringbreakage, bore polishing and liner wear better than other chemistries do.Better protection provides significant savings through lower rates of oilconsumption, a longer period until first overhaul and longer engine life.

The test fleets include 45 vehicles equippedwith Detroit Diesel 6V-92TTA engines withan average 350,000 test miles per vehicle; 10vehicles equipped with Cummins NTC-350engines with 220,000 test miles per vehicle;21 vehicles equipped with Caterpillar 3406DITA engines with 220,000 test miles pervehicle. AMSOIL INC. and Jeff Foster TruckingInc. completed a 250,000-mile demon-stration comparing the fuel economy andprotection of AMSOIL Series 3000Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oilto the fuel economy and protection of aconventional oil, Pennzoil Long Life15W-40 Motor Oil.

The trucks equipped with Series 3000were also equipped with AMSOIL DualGard By-Pass Oil Filtration Systems. The oil in the Series 3000-equippedtrucks was changed at 125,000 mileintervals. The Pennzoil motor oil andfull flow oil filter in the control truckswere changed at 20,000 mile intervals.

“The AMSOIL demonstration went very, very well,” said fleet owner Jeff Foster.“We’ve always used AMSOIL in our pick-ups and small engines, and we’re alwayslooking for ways to make operations moreefficient. Series 3000 fits right in with ouroperations and goals.”

Fuel EconomyDemonstration data showed trucksequipped with AMSOIL Series 3000Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oilobtained a 3.065 percent fuel economyincrease over the fuel economy of thetrucks equipped with Pennzoil.

These results conform to the results offuel economy testing performed forAMSOIL by an independent test facil-ity (see page 6). Those earlier resultsshowed up to a 3.42 percent fuel econ-omy increase in trucks equipped withAMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30

Heavy Duty Diesel Oil as compared totrucks equipped with a conventional15W-40 motor oil.

“In the trucking industry,” said Foster,“synthetic lubricants are commonlyused in the drivetrain for fuel economybenefits. Yet, I found it hard to believethat changing the engine oil would helpfuel economy. However, the data indi-cates about a three percent fuel econ-omy increase, and we’ve certainlynoticed a difference.”

Shop Savings“Shop savings was our focus in theAMSOIL demonstration,” said Foster.“We looked at the oil and by-pass filter asa way to keep our shop size smaller. Iknew the oil and filters would work as faras wear protection goes, and oil analysisshows everything is working perfectly.”

The AMSOIL-equipped trucks loggedsignificantly less shop time than thecontrol trucks, due to the significantlylonger drain intervals used with theAMSOIL-equipped trucks. Yet, engineprotection and oil viability remaineduncompromised in the AMSOIL-equipped trucks. Compared to the con-trol oil, AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil retainshigher TBN, maintains in-spec viscos-ity longer and better controls soot.

TBN retention, viscosity maintenanceand soot control are essential to oil via-bility, corrosion inhibition, enginecleanliness and wear control. Wearmetal analyses confirm low rates ofengine wear with AMSOIL Series 3000Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty DieselOil in extended drain service.

“We now change the oil in the AMSOILtrucks once a year, or about every125,000 miles. I would feel confidentusing the oil for even longer drain inter-vals,” said Foster. “After seeing whatSeries 3000 does for these trucks, I’vehad it installed in other trucks in thefleet. Series 3000 is a great product.”

Soot is a combustion by-product that entersthe engine as blow-by and causes oil thickeningand engine wear. The soot levels in the enginesequipped with AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic5W-30 and the AMSOIL Dual Gard Oil FiltrationSystem have remained lower than the levels inthe trucks equipped with the Pennzoil productand full flow filters, though the change intervalsare significantly longer for the AMSOIL prod-ucts than for the control products.

Shop SavingsSeries 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy DutyDiesel Oil helped this fleet reduce its overhead.

Colonial Heights, Virginia – “I didn’t see any surprises in thereat all,” said owner/operator Haywood Gray of his 1990 MackE7-400 engine at teardown after Gray had run the engine409,000 miles without once changing the oil.

Gray used AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel andMarine Oil, an AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter and periodic oilanalysis to achieve his impressive drain interval.

When the E7-400 was torn down by the local Mack dealershipand its parts were examined by a certified independent enginerater, it showed only light to moderate wear throughout.

In fact, according to the engine rater, the parts could have beenput right back in the engine. “I see no reason why the enginecouldn’t run on,” he said.

The teardown oil analysis confirmed the rater’s findings. Thesample’s content of wear metals was extremely low: one-sixththe lead and one-third the iron allowed by Mack condemnationlimits — after 409,000 miles without an oil change.

409,000 MilesWithout an Oil ChangeAfter 409,000 miles without an oil change, the AMSOIL-protectedMack engine in this 1990 truck was as wear-free as an enginein comparable service treated to TWENTY TIMES the oil changes.

Spectrochemical analysis also showedexcellent values for detergent-alkalinityand anti-wear compounds, further con-firming the oil’s ongoing serviceability.

Blevins’ extended drain demonstration ended three yearsafter he installed AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy DutyDiesel and Marine Oil when he sold the truck. The buyer,a mechanic, has continued Blevins’ oil and filter regimen,

using AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oiland AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filters. Infact, he did not replace the oil Blevinshad installed in the engine three yearspreviously.

Today, the same fill of oil is in the engineand has seen 500,000 miles of service.

The valve cover and valve train in Blevins’ truckare still clean after 325,350 miles on one fill ofAMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Dieseland Marine Oil.

InstallationFor specific installations, see the AMSOIL ProductSelection GuideNew EnginesRun a new engine 1,000 to 6,000miles, or until oil consumption stabi-lizes at an acceptable level, beforeinstalling AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils to purge the engine of break-inwear metals.

Service LifeWith oil analysis and regular filterchanges, AMSOIL synthetic dieseloils may be used in diesel engines forsignificantly longer periods thanpetroleum oils may be used — typi-cally, two to three times longer.

Gasoline EnginesAMSOIL synthetic diesel oils are for-mulated for gasoline and dieselengines. In most gasoline engines, they may be used for 15,000 miles orone year drain intervals, whichevercomes first. Follow engine manufac-turers’ drain interval recommendationsin turbo-charged gasoline engines.

Mixing AMSOILAMSOIL synthetic diesel oils arecompatible with petroleum oils. However, mixing AMSOIL syntheticdiesel oils with other oils mayshorten oil service life.

Engine oil additives and other after-market products are not recom-mended for use with AMSOILsynthetic diesel oils.

Change-OverChange the oil filter. For longest oildrain intervals, install an AMSOILBy-Pass Oil Filter and an AMSOILSuper Duty Oil Filter.

Frequent oil filter changes will correctincreased post-changeover oil con-sumption. Once engine deposits disap-pear, oil consumption rates should returnto normal or lower than normal rates.

AMSOIL synthetic diesel oils nor-mally turn dark as they clean andlubricate, even with a by-pass filter.

Oil Analyzers Inc.Oil Analyzers Inc. puts technologically advanced testingequipment in the hands of experienced diagnosticians todeliver accurate, reliable results. What Is Oil Analysis?Oil analysis is a maintenance manage-ment tool that allows users to monitorequipment condition for maximumequipment life, maximum lubricantdrain interval and optimal downtimescheduling. Oil analysis saves users sig-nificant money by reducing equipmentreplacements and repairs, reducing thevolume of lubricant purchased and des-tined for disposal, and most importantly,by reducing equipment downtime.

Oil analysis customers interested inextended their oil drain intervals often“trendline” their oil condition, comparingthe results of the most recent report tothose of previous reports. Trendliningestablishes normal patterns in wear met-als content, viscosity, acid content, neu-tralization ability and other characteristicsas specified. Departures from establishedpatterns indicate a change in engine orlubricant condition. The informationoffered by trendlining may be used tocorrect abnormal conditions before theycause damage or failure.
