DYNALOY is a super-hard, super-thin electrodeposited chromium coating developed and applied by General Magnaplate Canada that sets new standards for durability, corrosion/heat resistance, and design/production accuracy. And unlike ordinary chrome plating, DYNALOY is a finished process, eliminating the need for additional grinding or secondary operations.

DYNALOY has a coating thickness of .0002” (+ -.0001”), hardness in excess of Rc67, coefficient of friction (COF) as low as 0.12. It can withstand continuous temperatures from 30°F to 1000°F and intermittent temperatures from -400°F to 1699°F, which makes it very popular in the nuclear power plant marketplace. Treated parts and tooling also resist attack by most organic and inorganic compounds. The micro-surface composition of the enhanced surface aids in lubricant dispersion, helping to further reduce galling, seizing and excessive friction.

Field tests on the bearing surfaces of grinders, lathes, shapers, milling machines, drill presses and other machine tools demonstrate the enhanced wear resistance of DYNALOY in slid-ing surface contacts. Because plating can be controlled so precise-ly, DYNALOY enables design, production and plant engineers to achieve savings through reduced machining and conformance within design tolerances. Additionally, DYNALOY is compatible with most ferrous and non-ferrous metals, allowing maximum design selection of base material. Finish quality is improved, downtime and maintenance costs controlled.

The DYNALOY process is practical and economical for single-unit or volume production, and has been used success-fully in injection molding, and a variety of machine tools and components for hydraulic powered machinery, processing rolls, computers, and aerospace components.

According to Aversenti, tools manufactured by General Magnaplate with the CMPT process reproduce fine pattern detail, with dimensional stability, and is consistent with tra-ditional EDM finished tooling. “This new process represents a quantum leap in the composite fabrication industry, making it possible to drastically lower the final cost for many molded, complex-shaped parts, especially those with contours.” Such contoured composite parts are used in applications as diverse as Stealth bombers and refrigerator doors.

CMPT is a dense, multi-directional, all-metal-weaving process which eliminates the need to machine layup-molds out of large, heavy metal ingots or castings that require so much time to produce. It combines the accuracy, precision, and good surface quality previously available only after machining. It makes

Depending on the size of the tool-face, this robotically controlled process may take from a few hours to several days. When completed, the toolface is ready for use after being positioned on a flex-contour holding table for stability.

The shorter lead times and lower costs of CMPT will permit more frequent model changes by larger companies as they quick-ly adjust designs to consumer tastes. A customized tool-leasing program being developed allows smaller companies to board the “composite express” by manufacturing and selling complex shapes without making major capital investments and without long lead times between concepts and salable products.

has updated its Engineering Data Guide, a copy of which is available for downloading on our web site, www.magnaplate.com. A hard copy of the brochure can be requested by calling Tel: 800 441 6173.

The Engineering Data Guide brochure provides critical technical data on the full range of Magnaplate coatings including Tufram, Nedox, Plasmadize and Dynaloy. No matter what your industry or applica-tion, one of General Magnaplate’s coatings will provide the solution, from reducing friction and wear, to providing dry lubrication, protecting against chemical attack and corrosion, or providing resistance against abrasion or galling.

Literature Update

India, with its diversified and large industrial base, is evolving to become globally competitive and through investment in its infrastructure, its huge English-speaking population and tremendous resources, is now an area that General Magnaplate is establishing strong relations in.

Not only does India have the resources to provide other global companies with services, such as call centers for credit card companies like American Express and customer support lines for computer giants like Dell and HP, it also boasts a huge domestic marketplace that itself is growing at extremely rapid rates. It’s not all outsiders who are providing the investment for growth. According to government statements, Indian com-panies have drawn up ambitious plans for expanding and diversifying their manufacturing activities with investments of about US$ 12 billion in the next three years.

General Magnaplate, itself, is in the process of appointing major licensees in India for the application of its coatings across many diverse industries, but specifically in the growing oil and gas, plastics and semiconductors sectors. According to Edmund Aversenti, COO of General Magnaplate, it’s a region that the company cannot afford to ignore.“General Magnaplate has always been keen to expand beyond the North American marketplace and take advan-tage of the industrial growth in other parts of the world. For many years we have had licensees appointed across Europe and in Japan too, so venturing into foreign territories has always been part of our culture of innovation and explora-tion,” reports Aversenti.India’s investment in its own infrastructure also makes for an even more attractive proposition for American companies. Aversenti adds, “The Indian Government is focusing on expansion and modernization of roads and has opened this

up for private sector participation. Forty-eight new road proj-ects worth US $12 billion are under construction. The gov-ernment has also announced ambitious plans to add around 100,000 MW of additional generation capacity via 12 nuclear power plants by the year 2012, while the government India is also developing a well-organized educational system, with internationally recognized excellence in some areas of higher education. More than 250 universities and over 13,150 higher educational institutions are producing 2.46 million graduates, including 300,000 engineers and 150,000 IT professionals, every year. The country now boasts a tremendous knowledge pool of human resources comprising engineers, scientists, managers and skilled personnel and the largest pool of IT manpower in the world. For example, it is estimated that there are 150,000 IT professionals in Bangalore. There are just 120,000 in Silicon Valley.Ed Aversenti continues, “When you consider the major players now investing heavily in R&D in India, from Microsoft and Texas Instruments to Chrysler and GE, it’s crucial that General Magnaplate develops a presence in the sub-continent. Not only do we want to able to open up new relationships within Indian industry, we also want to be able to serve our existing customers on a global scale.”
