Happy CHRISTUS Day! CHRISTUS Santa Rosa joined the rest of the CHRISTUS Health in celebrating its creation.

On February 1, 1999, in a spirit of collaboration and affinity, our two sponsoring Congregations,

The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word of Houston and of San Antonio, consolidated

their separate health care ministries to create one CHRISTUS Health. The Congregation of the

Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth joined our growing ministry 17 years later. We celebrate

CHRISTUS Day to acknowledge the creation of CHRISTUS Health as an international system of

health care ministries and to celebrate the contributions, commitment, and compassionate

service of our more than 45,000 Associates across 60+ hospitals and 350 clinics and outpatient

centers in four countries including the United States, Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

Celebrating CHRISTUS Day at CSRH-MC

Wednesdays are Wear Red Days! Bring awareness to heart health and learn how to identify life-threatening heart

conditions. Associates are invited to wear red on Wednesdays throughout February to help raise awareness about heart

disease being the number one killer of women. Please note that jeans are not allowed and all other dress code guidelines

remain in effect for safety and sanitary reasons. And for Valentine’s Day, forget the candy and flowers – give your sweetheart

a free, heart risk assessment by clicking here to find out your heart’s health.

The CHRISTUS advocacy team is making rounds on Capitol Hill,

regarding the impact some Presidential Executive Orders could

have on our Catholic ministry.

President Donald Trump has issued an Executive Order that

impacts refugee resettlement in the United States. In part, the

Executive Order bars the entry of any refugee who is awaiting

resettlement in the United States for 120 days. Today, with more

than 65 million people forcibly displaced from their homes, the

need for the U.S. to show leadership in welcoming refugees and

provide freedom from persecution is more urgent than ever.

Commissioned to healA beautiful Commissioning Ceremony welcomes a new

leader to CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center.

Dr. Ian Thompson, Jr. was blessed with holy oil on his

forehead and his hands: a symbolic gesture to remember

we are God’s instruments of healing. The ceremony

brought together Hospital leadership, as well as Associates

and physicians from throughout the city. All joined in

greeting Dr. Thompson and his family to CSRH-MC.

St. Rose unveiledCHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center

(CSRH-MC) unveiled an image of St. Rose of Lima,

created by local artist G. E. “Buddy” Mullan. His widow,

Celina Rios-Mullan, spoke of the image, which has

been placed in the St. Rose Fellowship Hall. Mullan was

a prolific artist with a distinctive, southwestern style

which CHRISTUS Santa Rosa has enjoyed in the past–

his two commissioned St. Rose of Lima pieces were

originally at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and at CSRH-MC for some time.

Now, a wonderful new addition adorns the CSRH-MC’s wall!

Medical Records are movingNeed medical records? Prepare to head downtown. In a measure to increase productivity

and save valuable real estate space, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center’s Health

Information Management (HIM) has changed its processes and merged with the team at The

Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

The CSR EC - Alon will be sending their records, too. There the records will be assembled,

scanned, indexed, and made available for all medical staff and billing.

One representative will remain at CSRH-MC’s HIM to assist with records collection, and one

representative from our release of information area will remain to continue serving our

patients and customers’ needs.

A share of the PIE: The Quality Patient Safety Program awards

a quarterly Process Improvement Excellence Award (PIE). This

quarter’s winners are the Associates in CHRISTUS Santa Rosa

Hospital – Medical Center’s Central Supply Department.

Celebrating some vital statisticsCHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels (CSRH-NB) received the 2016 Five Star Award for representing excellence in vital registration in the state of Texas. The award goes to hospitals which excel in accuracy and timeliness of birth records. Associates must also complete the required education and attend the annual conference for the State of Texas. CSRH-NB was among only 49 hospitals/birth centers to receive the award. The Hospital also received the Exemplary Award from the Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for obtaining an average quality control score of 100 percent in 2016. The OAG comes out to our facility four times a year and reviews charts, as well as watches our team perform the “acknowledgement of paternity” procedures. Congratulations to our Associates who attend class, pass annual tests, and continue to show compassionate care to families who visit our Hospital!

Welcome, Wayne Vrba, new Chair of the Civic Advisory Board for CSRH-NB. The Board is responsible for helping the Hospital create an environment of healing and satisfaction for the patients, families, and physicians who enter. Vrba was elected to the Board originally at the spurring of former Chair and friend, Marty Lindley. Vrba says Lindley left an amazing impression with her civic leadership in New Braunfels, and he hopes to honor her in this new position.

Some positive changes are in the works at CHRISTUS

Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels (CSRH-NB),

thanks to Lean Daily Management (LDM). The

effort has Hospital leadership rounding, listening,

and helping implement measures to increase

productivity as well as patient safety.

One instance involved a hiccup in the turnaround

time of a biomarker diagnostic tool in the

Emergency Department. Beginning in September, the Lab Team began daily huddles to

attack the low compliance rate. After several brainstorming sessions, the team identified

some of the delays and, with the help of ED Associates,

created targeted interventions to improve compliance.

The compliance rate tripled, and in January, reached

more than 16 days of 100 percent compliance!

Because of some of these successes, LDM may soon be

replicated across the Market! Great work, CSRH-NB!

Ken Neisen and Jim Wesson are proud to see that top honors go to our CHRISTUS Santa Rosa chefs! The team took second place in the Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation’s annual Silver Fest. Pictured are Chef Keith Williams, Catering Manager Ma’Ayan Braxton, and Lead Cook Ruben Munoz. The dish: Wild hog with apple mushroom ragu, served over soft polenta.

Maternal Fetal Care specialists visit via Telemedicine

Women experiencing high-risk pregnancies in New Braunfels now have greater access to specialists who can make diagnoses and recommendations, thanks to a new telemedicine program associated with the Maternal Fetal Medicine team from The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.Dr. Peter Nielsen and his team of specialists can access patients, read and confer on sonograms, and speak to physicians and patients through an internet-based connection. The service is offered at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital’s freestanding Emergency Room at Creekside to women who have been referred by their obstetrician, or OB/GYN, because of known or existing complications or risks.

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital– New Braunfels welcomes its 2017 Civic Advisory Board. We are blessed to have this group watching over our ministry!

CHRISTUS SANTA ROSA HOSPITAL – NEW BRAUNFELS

According to the American Heart Association it’s plausible! Studies indicate women are more likely than men to experience sudden, intense chest pain caused by an emotionally stressful event, like the death of a loved one, a divorce, or breakup. Dr. Sheri Boyd, a cardiologist who practices at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – New Braunfels, talked with KENS-TV about Broken Heart Syndrome and the research on how the heart changes during heartbreak. The interview was prompted after the recent death of actress Debbie Reynolds, who died one day after her daughter, actress Carrie Fisher. Watch the story by

Can a broken heart kill?

Thanks to our Volunteers! The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills (CSRH - WH) Pediatric Team would like to thank all of the Volunteers for helping make 2016’s Third Annual Westover Hills Outpatient Pediatric Christmas Party a great success! Overall, 30 families attended the event, bringing more than 100 friends and families. Many thanks to the 50 CSRH-WH volunteers who helped plan, donate trees, decorate, design rooms, wrap gifts, and clean up after the party.

Eye surgery swapped for heart surgeryRaul Romo had come to the United States to have surgery on his right eye, but doctors soon discovered some bleeding within it. Through routine stress tests, it was determined that Romo needed cardiac care. Romo was quickly admitted into CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital– Westover Hills (CSRH-WH), where he was ushered into heart bypass surgery. Romo said St. Rose was

the patron saint of his town in Mexico, and his family was relieved when they learned his care would come at a hospital sharing that heritage! CSRH-WH’s Dr. Jorge Magallon helped make this patient and his family from Mexico feel right at home. Dr. Magallon says CSRH-WH has what it takes to grow as a “destination” hospital for Mexican-Nationals seeking cardiothoracic care and other specialties unique to our west side Hospital.

Top-notch Associates recognizedCHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Westover Hills celebrated a trio of women for their

extraordinary passion for the professions. Sr. Mary Carpenter, RN, of the 5th Floor Surgical

Unit, is honored as a DAISY Award recipient. Selena Plata, RN, also of the 5th Floor Surgical

Unit, earned the ROSE Award. And Maria Perez, CNA, of the 6th Floor Medical Unit is the

Associate of the 1st Quarter! We are blessed to have these wonderful servants of God!

Upgrades and expansions underwayThe expanding cardiac, vascular, and invasive radiology services mean some construction

upgrades for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills! The Hospital is building a new

IR special procedure suite on the 1st floor in the Radiology Department and an additional bi-

plane Cath Lab on the 2nd floor that features advanced cardiovascular imaging capabilities

to improve patient care. It will also include a shielding system to protect caregivers from

radiation exposure and occupational injuries. The equipment will be state-of-the art and

enable CSRH—WH to accommodate current volume and allow for continued growth. The

project will last 4-6 months.

THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF SAN ANTONIO

New CNO joins leadership teamThe Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has named Rhonda

Thompson as Chief Nursing Officer.

She joins the CHRISTUS ministry February 20. Thompson

commented, “I have followed the growth and transformational

development of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, and I’m

very excited to join the dynamic team that is leading the way in

pediatric health care in the community. The CHRISTUS mission,

‘To extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ,’ certainly puts

our work in perspective.” Thompson has served in clinical leadership roles at hospitals

in the Houston market. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2016. Outside of

work, Thompson is a court-appointed child advocate and parent liaison for special needs

children. Thompson brings a dedicated pediatric and perinatal focus to The Children’s

Hospital leadership team, which is already strongly committed to the children and families

they serve.

Tired of the wait? We are, too!A new “fast track” service has started in The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio’s Emergency

Department. It’s being called the “Walk-In Clinic” for now, but administrators are looking for

a more permanent and proper name for it. This Walk-In Clinic is an exciting opportunity to

build volume as it seeks to keep people from leaving when they see a crowded ER waiting

room. The service offers a faster option to children with minor illnesses or injuries who may

be unable to see a primary care doc or do not have a primary care doctor. The staff will also

be focused on channeling the children into primary care practices so they can establish a

“medical home” for routine visits and wellness checkups. A public announcement will come

after the ED team has streamlined and polished the process.

Illuminating news from aboveA new The fin is back! Engineers have been working on the Hospital’s trademark “fin” to

make this light fixture something to behold. Forty-three lights inside it are getting upgrades

which will take a month to complete. When it is turned on, The Children’s Hospital of San

Antonio will illuminate the downtown with an option of more than 14 million colors!

Hands-on learningDozens of Memorial High School students participated in SA Works Job Shadow Day at

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Students learned about various jobs in health care

and toured five different Hospital departments including the Simulation Center, Radiology,

Laboratory, Rehabilitation, and Child Life. This is the

second year SA Works has partnered with Junior

Achievement to help match hundreds of San Antonio

area students with employers so the students can learn

about current workforce needs and opportunities as

they plan their own career paths.
