INTRODUCTION
A network management system (NMS) is a
combination of hardware and software used
to monitor and administer a computernetwork.
Individual network elements (NEs) in a
network are managed by an element
management system.

NMS SOFTWARE
These are critical to any Network
Management System.
They managed different devices and renderdifferent services.
Device management includes faults,
accounting, configuration, performance, andsecurity (FCAPS) management.

Network Performance Management
Not all networks are the same. As data is broken into component parts (oftenknown frames, packets, or segments) for transmission, several factors can affecttheir delivery.
Latency: It can take a long time for a packet to be delivered across interveningnetworks. In reliable protocols where a receiver acknowledges delivery of each
chunk of data, it is possible to measure this as round-trip time. Packet loss: In some cases, intermediate devices in a network will lose packets.
This may be due to errors, to overloading of the intermediate network, or tointentional discarding of traffic in order to enforce a particular service level.
Retransmission: When packets are lost in a reliable network, they areretransmitted. This incurs two delays: First, the delay from re-sending the data;and second, the delay resulting from waiting until the data is received in the
correct order before forwarding it up the protocol stack. Throughput: The amount of traffic a network can carry is measured as
throughput, usually in terms such as kilobits per second. Throughput is analogousto the number of lanes on a highway, whereas latency is analogous to its speedlimit.

Tools For Network Performance
Measurement For performance measurement, operators typically measure the performance
of their networks at different levels. They either use per-port metrics (howmuch traffic on port 80 flowed between a client and a server and how long didit take) or they rely on end-user metrics (how fast did the login page load forBob.)
NETFLOW:NetFlow is a network protocol developed by Cisco Systems forcollecting IP traffic information. A NetFlow record can contain a wide varietyof information about the traffic in a given flow. NetFlow version 5 (one of themost commonly used versions, followed by version 9) contains the following.
Version number
Sequence number
Number of bytes and packets observed in the flow Layer 3 headers:
Source & destination IP addresses
Source and destination port numbers

NETWORK MONITORING
The term network monitoring describes the use of a system thatconstantly monitors a computer network for slow or failingcomponents and that notifies the network administrator (viaemail, pager or other alarms) in case of outages. It is a subset of
the functions involved in network management.
ACCELOPS:AccelOps provides integrated data centermonitoring and Business Service Management softwaredelivered as a Virtual Appliance or Software-as-a-Service(SaaS).
AccelOps offers an integrated, unified and service-oriented platform for monitoring, alerting, analyzing and reportingacross performance, availability, security and changemanagement in the context of business services.

NETWORK TRAFFIC MEASUREMENT
Network traffic measurement is the process of measuring
the amount and type of traffic on a particular network.
This is especially important with regard to effective
bandwidth management.
NETLIMITER: NetLimiter is client-side traffic shaping
and monitoring software for the Windows operating
system.
NetLimiter is a software-only solution. This has the advantage of being less expensive to deploy,
but can result in being more difficult to manage its use
across more than one computer.
