DEATHROCK GOTH College of Merchandising, Hospitality & Tourism Purpose & RaBonale Purpose: To discover to mo1va1ons for dress and social dynamics of the Deathrock Goth subculture Theore1cal Background: Gender Ambivalence Theory Self@percep1on Theory Self@verifica1on Theory Uniqueness Mo1va1on Theory Procedures & Methods Interviews Observa1ons Academic Research Industry ImplicaBons Deathrock Goths purchase unisex clothing for gender bending Women wear lingerie as outerwear Growth of weekend warriors widens market opportunity Makeup market for men Academic ImplicaBons Self@percep1on: dressing out of self@hatred Shock value as a mo1va1on for dress Importance of individual uniqueness within the group Unequal gender ambivalence Insight into a niche consumer group Value of Research Deathrock Goth is an overlooked subculture that is approaching dress and consump1on in a revolu1onary way. Individuality and Conformity Individuality is more highly valued than conformity. Each individual is striving to be unique, even from the subculture. Deathrock Goths desire to stand out puts emphasis on the individual, as opposed to the group, which is lessening group unity and fragmen1ng the subculture. This allows for more weekend warriors, or people who only act as a part of the subculture during leisure 1mes. Gender Roles in Dress Partake in gender bending, or the mixing of male and female dress. Androgyny and gender ambivalence in males is widely accepted through makeup, skirts, and hairstyles. Women par1cipate in androgyny through hairstyles, specifically Mohawks, body modifica1ons, and a general sense of toughness. Despite gender blending, women are highly sexualized. For example, they wear lingerie as outerwear and incorporate S&M styles. SelfGpercepBon and SelfGverificaBon Individuals are drawn to the Deathrock Goth subculture through the process of self@percep1on. They feel like outsiders and reflect on the way they are treated and behave. They note that they are different, and decide to dress as such. Deathrock Goth con1nues to thrive due to individual self@verifica1on. They affirm their self@concepts by con1nuing to dress and act in a manner that is rebellious and sets them apart from the norm.
